Sunday, 11 November 2018 marks the one hundredth (or centennial) anniversary of the Armistice that ended what we now know as the Great War. The First World War (the Great War) raged (for Britain and its Empire, then including Australia) from 4th August 1914, until the eleventh hour, of the eleventh day, of the eleventh month, 1918, one hundred years ago, when the armistice took effect and the guns finally fell silent. The war was unlike any experienced previously, being the first truly global war, and among the first mechanised or industrial conflicts. The sheer number of the dead, the dying, the wounded, and the permanently maimed, was a human catastrophe of unprecedented scale, producing the epithet great and the (still unrealised) hope that this would be the war to end all wars. THE HOLY COMMUNION GATHERING IN GOD S NAME Introit Hymn: 437 NEH (10am only) 1. Praise the Lord! ye heavens, adore him; Praise him, angels, in the height; Sun and moon, rejoice before him; Praise him, all ye stars and light: Praise the Lord! for he has spoken, Worlds his mighty voice obeyed; Laws, which never shall be broken, For their guidance he has made. For a small nation (numerically), at the geographical fringes of the then British Empire, which had existed in its own right for little more than a decade, the contribution of Australia, and the part played by Australians, in the Great War, was immense. Some 64,000 Australians were to pay the ultimate sacrifice, and another 150,000 were maimed and wounded. The casualty rate was close to 65%, one of the highest of any nationality on both sides. The physical and psychological effects on those who returned, whether physically wounded or not, are beyond calculation. For all Australians, the war years left an indelible imprint on the national memory and national conscience that is still markedly apparent today, especially on national occasions of remembrance such as Anzac Day. The Christian churches, including the largest denomination in Australia at the time the Church of England (as the Anglican Church was then known) played an important role on the home front during the war years, especially as the casualties mounted. Clergy bore the difficult, and spiritually burdensome, task of notifying the loved ones living in their parish of a death at the front. Because none of the bodies of the fallen (apart from two, General Bridges an early casualty at Gallipoli, and the Unknown Soldier ) were ever repatriated home, churches became the sacred places in which the war dead, for whom there would never be a funeral and no grave to visit, were remembered. Almost immediately, the church, and especially the Anglican Church, was at the forefront of leading the nation in ritual acts to assist its people in their grief. These rituals (some have called them secular liturgies ) were soon crystallised into the familiar form of the Anzac Day observances Praise the Lord! for he is glorious; Never shall his promise fail; God has made his saints victorious; Sin and death shall not prevail. Praise the God of our salvation; Hosts on high, his power proclaim; Heaven and earth, and all creation, Laud and magnify his Name! 3. Worship, honour, glory, blessing, Lord, we offer to thy name; Young and old, thy praise expressing, Join their Saviour to proclaim. As the saints in heaven adore thee; We would bow before thy throne; As thine angels serve before thee, So on earth thy will be done. Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God s kingdom, now and for ever. The priest greets the people The Lord be with you. And also with you. Words: Verses 1, 2 Foundling Hospital Collection 1796 Verse 3 Edward Osler The New English Hymnal 3

4 Sentence of Scripture 'No one has greater love than this, than to lay down one's life for one's friends. You are my friends,' says the Lord, 'if you do what I command you.' John Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen. The two Great Commandments Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength. Jesus said: This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself. Lord, have mercy (8am only) Lord, have mercy; Christ, have mercy; Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy (10am only) Lord, have mercy; Lord, have mercy; Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy; Christ, have mercy; Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy; Lord, have mercy; Lord, have mercy. The Hymn of Praise, Gloria in excelsis Glory to God in the highest, and peace to God s people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. The Collect for Remembrance Day O God, our ruler and guide, in whose hands are the destinies of this and every nation, we give you thanks for the freedoms we enjoy in this land and for those who laid down their lives to defend them: We pray that we and all the people of Australia, gratefully remembering their courage and their sacrifice, may have grace to live in a spirit of justice, of generosity, and of peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. The Collect for Defence Forces Heavenly Father, we commend to your gracious care and keeping all the men and women in our Armed Forces at home and abroad. Defend them day by day with your heavenly grace; strengthen them in danger and temptations; and give them courage to face the perils that beset them; and help them to know that nothing can separate them from your love; in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD A Reading from the Book of Micah In days to come the mountain of the Lord's house shall be established as the highest of the mountains, and shall be raised up above the hills. Peoples shall stream to it, and many nations shall come and say: 5

'Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; that he may teach us his ways and that we may walk in his paths.' For out of Zion shall go forth instruction, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. He shall judge between many peoples, and shall arbitrate between strong nations far away; they shall beat their swords into ploughshares, and their spears into pruning-hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more; but they shall all sit under their own vines and under their own fig trees, and no one shall make them afraid; for the mouth of the Lord of hosts has spoken. Micah Hear the Word of the Lord, Thanks be to God. 6 Psalm 46 (said antiphonally) 1. God is our refuge and strength: a very present help in trouble. 2. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth be moved: and though the mountains are shaken in the midst of the sea; 3. Though the waters rage and foam: and though the mountains quake at the rising of the sea. 4. There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God: the holy dwelling-place of the Most High. 5. God is in the midst of her, therefore she shall not be moved: God will help her, and at break of day. 6. The nations make uproar, and the kingdoms are shaken: but God has lifted his voice, and the earth shall tremble. 7. The Lord of hosts is with us: the God of Jacob is our stronghold. 8. Come then and see what the Lord has done: what destruction he has brought upon the earth. 9. He makes wars to cease in all the world: he breaks the bow and shatters the spear, and burns the chariots in the fire. 10. 'Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted upon the earth.' 11. The Lord of hosts is with us: the God of Jacob is our stronghold. A Reading from the Letter to the Hebrews But recall those earlier days when, after you had been enlightened, you endured a hard struggle with sufferings, sometimes being publicly exposed to abuse and persecution, and sometimes being partners with those so treated. For you had compassion for those who were in prison, and you cheerfully accepted the plundering of your possessions, knowing that you yourselves possessed something better and more lasting. Do not, therefore, abandon that confidence of yours; it brings a great reward. For you need endurance, so that when you have done the will of God, you may receive what was promised. For yet 'in a very little while, the one who is coming will come and will not delay; but my righteous one will live by faith. My soul takes no pleasure in anyone who shrinks back.' But we are not among those who shrink back and so are lost, but among those who have faith and so are saved. Hebrews a Hear the Word of the Lord, Thanks be to God. Gradual Hymn: 417 NEH (10am only) 1. O God, our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come, Our shelter from the stormy blast, And our eternal home; 2. Under the shadow of thy throne Thy saints have dwelt secure; Sufficient is thine arm alone, And our defence is sure. 7

3. Before the hills in order stood, Or earth received her frame, From everlasting thou art God, To endless years the same. 4. A thousand ages in thy sight Are like an evening gone, Short as the watch that ends the night Before the rising sun. 5. Time, like an ever-rolling stream, Bears all its sons away; They fly forgotten, as a dream Dies at the opening day. 6. O God, our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come, Be thou our guard while troubles last, And our eternal home. 8 Remain standing for the Gospel Reading The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to John chapter 15 beginning at verse 9 Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love. I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete. 'This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one's life for one's friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father. You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name. I am giving you these commands so that you may love one another. For the Gospel of the Lord, Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Words: Isaac Watts The New English Hymnal The Sermon Silence may follow The Nicene Creed Let us together affirm the faith of the Church. We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. 9

10 We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. The priest says THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Let us pray for the world and for the Church. The response to God of peace' is Strengthen our peace. The priest says CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Let us confess to God the sins and shortcomings of the world; its pride, its selfishness, its greed; its evil divisions and hatreds. Let us confess our share in what is wrong, and our failure to seek and establish that peace which God wills for his children. After a short silence, all say Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed. We have not loved you with our whole heart. We have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. In your mercy forgive what we have been, help us to amend what we are, and direct what we shall be; that we may do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with you; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Absolution. The priest says Almighty God, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in life eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. THE GREETING OF PEACE All stand. The Greeting of Peace is introduced We are the body of Christ. His Spirit is with us. The priest says The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. All may exchange a sign of peace Offertory Hymn: 28 TIS (10am only) 1. God is our strength and refuge, Our present help in trouble; And we therefore will not fear, Though the earth should change, Though mountains shake and tremble, Though swirling waters are raging: God the Lord of Hosts is with us evermore. 2. There is a flowing river Within God s holy city; God is in the midst of her, She shall not be moved. God s help is swiftly given, Thrones vanish at his presence; God the Lord of Hosts is with us evermore. 3. Come, see the works of our maker, Learn of his deeds all-powerful: Wars will cease across the world 11

When he shatters the spear. Be still and know your creator, Uplift him in the nations; God the Lord of Hosts is with us evermore. The gifts of the people having been brought to the Altar: Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation. Through your goodness we have these gifts to share. Accept and use our offerings for your glory and for the service of your kingdom. Blessed be God for ever. The names of those from this parish who fought in the Great War are laid on the Altar and the names of those who paid the supreme sacrifice are read For those who have given their lives Eternal Father, we praise and bless Thy glorious Name for the courage and devotion, even unto death, of all who have given their lives for the freedom of the world. Grant to them refreshment and peace; and to those who mourn their loss grant the strength and solace of unbroken fellowship with their loved ones in the Communion of Saints; through Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour. Amen. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Who, according to His abundant mercy, hath begotten us again unto a living hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead to an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away. Amen. Eternal rest, grant to them O Lord; Let light perpetual shine upon them. [The Lord be with you. And also with you.] Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. THE GREAT THANKSGIVING Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. Words: Richard Thomas Bewes 1934 All rights reserved. Reproduced with permission Together In Song All glory and honour be yours always and everywhere, mighty Creator, everliving God. We give you thanks and praise for your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ, who by the power of your Spirit was born of Mary and lived as one of us. By his death on the cross and rising to new life, he offered the one true sacrifice for sin and obtained an eternal deliverance for his people. And now we give you thanks because you have called us into the community of the Fallen and all your saints, and set before us the example of their witness and the fruit of your Spirit in their lives. Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and saying / singing: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Merciful God, we thank you for these gifts of your creation, this bread and wine, and we pray that by your Word and Holy Spirit, we who eat and drink them may be partakers of Christ s body and blood. On the night he was betrayed Jesus took bread; and when he had given you thanks he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take, eat. This is my body given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. After supper, he took the cup, and again giving you thanks 12 13

14 he gave it to his disciples, saying, Drink from this, all of you. This is my blood of the new covenant shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. You have gathered us together to feed on Christ and to remember all he has done for us: Fill us with your Spirit that we may follow Jesus in all we do and say, working for justice and bringing your peace to this world that you have made. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, with whom, and in whom, in the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, we worship you, Father, in songs of never-ending praise: Blessing and honour and glory and power are yours for ever and ever. Amen. As our Saviour Christ has taught us, we are confident to pray, Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen. THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD AND THE COMMUNION We who are many are one body in Christ, for we all share in the one bread. O lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world: grant them rest. O lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world: grant them rest. O lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world: grant them rest eternal. The invitation to receive Holy Communion Come let us take this holy sacrament of the body and blood of Christ in remembrance that he died for us, and feed on him in our hearts by faith with thanksgiving. The sacrament is given with the following words The body of Christ keep you in eternal life. Amen. The blood of Christ keep you in eternal life. Amen. After the distribution is completed all stand while the priest says Let us remember before God, and commend to his sure keeping those who have died for their country in war; those whom we knew, and whose memory we treasure; and all who have lived and died in the service of humankind. Silence Then the priest says Almighty and eternal God, from whose love in Christ we cannot be parted, either by death or life: hear our prayers and thanksgivings for all whom we remember this day; fulfil in them the purpose of your love; and bring us all, with them, to your eternal joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 15

16 The priest says THE SENDING OUT OF GOD S PEOPLE Gracious God, we thank you that in this sacrament you assure us of your goodness and love. Accept our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving and help us to grow in love and obedience that we may serve you in the world and finally be brought to that table where all your saints feast with you for ever. Most loving God, you send us into the world you love. Give us grace to go thankfully and with courage in the power of your Spirit. Notices and invitations Dismissal Hymn: 354 NEH (10am only) 1. Eternal Father, strong to save, Whose arm doth bind the restless wave, Who bidd'st the mighty ocean deep Its own appointed limits keep; O hear us when we cry to thee For those in peril on the sea. 2. O Christ, the Lord of hill and plain O'er which our armies are the main By mountain pass or valley low; Wherever, Lord, thy brethren go, Protect them by thy guarding hand From every peril on the land. 3. O Spirit, whom the Father sent To spread abroad the firmament; O Wind of heaven, by thy might Save all who dare the eagle's flight, And keep them by thy watchful care From every peril in the air. 4. O Trinity of love and power, Our brethren shield in danger's hour; From rock and tempest, fire and foe, Protect them whereso'er they go, Thus evermore shall rise to thee Glad praise from air and land and sea. 5. We pray that tumult soon shall cease; And hate and terror then depart: Still stand Thine ancient sacrifice, An humble and a contrite heart. Lord God of Hosts, be with us yet, Lest we forget lest we forget! The priest says God grant to the living, grace; to the departed, rest; to the Church, the Queen, the Commonwealth, and all humanity, peace and concord; and to us and all his servants, life everlasting; and the blessing of God almighty, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, come down upon you and remain with you always.
