4 A NOTE FROM YOUR PASTOR A number of you have asked me about indulgences as we have entered into the Jubilee year of Mercy. I thought I would share this response from Pope Francis from the Vatican website: tribunals/apost_penit/documents/rc_trib_appen_pro_ _indulgence_en.html God Bless! Fr. Joe General Remarks On Indulgences 1. This is how an indulgence is defined in the Code of Canon Law (can. 992) and in the Catechism of the Catholic Church (n. 1471): "An indulgence is a remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven, which the faithful Christian who is duly disposed gains under certain prescribed conditions through the action of the Church which, as the minister of redemption, dispenses and applies with authority the treasury of the satisfactions of Christ and the saints". 2. In general, the gaining of indulgences requires certain prescribed conditions (below, nn. 3, 4), and the performance of certain prescribed works (nn. 8, 9, 10 indicate those specific to the Holy Year). 3. To gain indulgences, whether plenary or partial, it is necessary that the faithful be in the state of grace at least at the time the indulgenced work is completed. 4. A plenary indulgence can be gained only once a day. In order to obtain it, the faithful must, in addition to being in the state of grace: Have the interior disposition of complete detachment from sin, even venial sin; Have sacramentally confessed their sins; Receive the Holy Eucharist (it is certainly better to receive it while participating in Holy Mass, but for the indulgence only Holy Communion is required); Pray for the intentions of the Supreme Pontiff. 5. It is appropriate, but not necessary, that the sacramental Confession and especially Holy Communion and the prayer for the Pope's intentions take place on the same day that the indulgenced work is performed; but it is sufficient that these sacred rites and prayers be carried out within several days (about 20) before or after the indulgenced act. Prayer for the Pope's intentions is left to the choice of the faithful, but an "Our Father" and a "Hail Mary" are suggested. One sacramental Confession suffices for several plenary indulgences, but a separate Holy Communion and a separate prayer for the Holy Father's intentions are required for each plenary indulgence. 6. For the sake of those legitimately impeded, confessors can commute both the work prescribed and the conditions required (except, obviously, detachment from even venial sin). 7. Indulgences can always be applied either to oneself or to the souls of the deceased, but they cannot be applied to other persons living on earth. Specific Aspects Of The Jubilee Year Having fulfilled the necessary conditions in nn. 3-4, the faithful may gain the Jubilee indulgence by performing one of the following works, listed here below in three categories: 8. Works of piety or religion Either make a pious pilgrimage to a Jubilee shrine or place (for Rome: one of the four Patriarchal Basilicas St Peter, St John Lateran, St Mary Major, St Paul, or to the Basilica of the Holy Cross in Jerusalem, the Basilica of St Laurence in Campo Verano, the Shrine of Our Lady of Divine Love or one of the Christian Catacombs, and participate there in Holy Mass or another liturgical celebration (Lauds or Vespers) or some pious exercise (the Stations of the Cross, the Rosary, the recitation of the Akathistos Hymn, etc.); or make a pious visit, as a group or individually, to one of these same Jubilee places, and there spend some time in Eucharistic adoration and pious meditations, ending with the "Our Father", the profession of faith in any approved form and prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mary. 9. Works of mercy or charity Either visit for a suitable time their brothers or sisters in need or in difficulty (the sick, the imprisoned, the elderly living alone, the handicapped, etc.), as if making a pilgrimage to Christ present in them; or support by a significant contribution works of a religious or social nature (for the benefit of abandoned children, young people in trouble, the elderly in need, foreigners in various countries seeking better living conditions); or devote a suitable part of personal free time to activities benefiting the community or other similar forms of personal sacrifice. 10. Acts of penance For at least one whole day Either abstain from unnecessary consumption (smoking, alcohol, etc.); or fast, or abstain from meat (or other food according to the specific norms of the Bishops' Conferences), and donate a proportionate sum of money to the poor

5 SEMINARIAN BIRTHDAY Our adopted seminarian, Adam Bradley, will be celebrating his birthday on January 24th. How wonderful it would be if many members of our parish sent him cards, care packages, etc. to let him know of our prayers and support for him as he continues to discern his vocation to the priesthood. His address is: St. Francis de Sales Seminary 3257 S. Lake Dr. St. Francis, WI TEACH MY PEOPLE TO PRAY HOLY HOUR Join us for Teach My People to Pray Holy Hour as we continue to pray together as a church of the Diocese of Green Bay, here at the Cathedral accompanied by harpist Izabella Sand on Wednesday, January 13th at 7 pm - 8 pm. Holy Hour also offered at St. John s on Thursday, December 21st from 9 am - 10 am. A NOTE FROM MICHAEL PICARD Greetings! It has been a while since I last had an update for everyone. In October I left Mundelein Seminary to discern God s call for me outside of the seminary. I am no longer a seminarian but I am still around the diocese, currently I am working for SPIRITUS which is based in Menasha. It is a group of young people putting on retreats for the Catholic youth in Wisconsin. Every now and then I will be around the Cathedral so if you see me please feel free to stop me and talk. I want to express my gratitude for the Cathedral parishioners during these last few years while I was in seminary, it is truly a blessing to be part of this community. Know that I will be keeping you in my prayers and I humbly ask for your continued prayers for me on this new path the Lord is leading me on. Thank you all again and God bless. -Mike Picard 131 S. Madison Street, Green Bay, WI Monday - Friday: 9:30 am - 5 pm; Saturday: 10 am - 4 pm LIKE us on Facebook. info@cathedralbookandgift.com Our wishes for a Happy, Healthy, and Blessed New Year! Thank you for allowing us to serve you. We look forward to continuing our ministry into the new year! We truly appreciate your patronage and your friendship! MASS OF THE ANOINTING OF THE SICK Mass of the Anointing of the sick will be held at Saint John the Evangelist on Sunday, February 7th at 10:45am. USHERS NEEDED! Since our recent stewardship drive, several ushers decided to step down. We cannot thank them enough for their years of dedication! To be mindful of everyone's time there will now be 4 ushers per Mass. It is our desire that each usher only usher once a month and to eventually, once again, have 6 ushers per Mass. In order for this to happen we are in need of 26 more ushers to step forward. 16 for Saturday evenings at 4 pm and 10 for Sundays at 9 am. Can you make a once a month commitment to help your parish by becoming an usher? If so call the office at FULLY ALIVE ADULT FAITH FORMATION SESSION Join us on Thursday, January 21st for Fully Alive Adult Faith Formation session from 6 pm to 7:30 pm at St. John the Evangelist where Deacon Tom Mahoney will present The Saints of Congress. PRAYER CORNER Baptism of the Lord "Rising from the waters of the Baptismal font, every Christian hears again the voice that was once heard on the banks of the Jordan River: " You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased." ~Saint Pope John Paul II Every one of us is a beloved child of God with whom He is pleased. We are each infinitely loved, created with unfathomable dignity. This is an amazing truth! Spend time each day this week praying and resting in the words of the gospel above, realizing God is speaking those word to you!

It was suggested that we have a potluck each month before our Adult Faith Formation session. To make this happen we need volunteers to coordinate the potluck each month. The potluck would be at 5:15 pm and the session would begin at 6 pm. We would also like to provide childcare. The whole family would attend the potluck. After the potluck the parents will attend the session at 6 pm while the teens could provide childcare. This could be an opportunity to earn church service learning hours for school or Confirmation. Call St. John parish office at if you are willing to help with either the potluck or the childcare. BISHOP RICKEN S MONTHLY PRAYER INTENTION That the example of the Holy Family may inspire all families of our Diocese to lives of deeper prayer and holiness.
