Women in the Word Luke 19:28 20:47 October 31, Read Luke 19: What specific instructions does Jesus give His disciples, and what is remarkable about these instructions? How does the scene actually play out? What does this tell us about Jesus? Read Zechariah 9:9 and Luke 19:11 and explain why a stranger might allow his colt to be taken in these circumstances. 2. Read Luke 19: As Jesus rides the colt, what do His followers do? Based on II Kings 9:13, what can we assume about this practice and its meaning in this instance? What are the people expecting and what do their actions communicate? Contrast the title the people have given Jesus with the title given Him by the Pharisees. Why do you think they see Him differently? 3. Read Luke 19:41-44 and look back at Luke 13: Describe the good things that Jesus longed to offer all the people of Jerusalem. What error do they make and what will be the result of that error? Read John 1:10-11 for more insight.
Women In the Word Luke 19:28 20:47 October 31, 2013 Page 2 4. Read Luke 19:45-20:8 and describe the dramatic events as Jesus enters the temple. What is His reason for acting this way and what attribute does He demonstrate? 5. From Luke 19:45-20:8, list all the things Jesus does during this time at the temple. Compare the people s reaction to Jesus to that of the religious leaders. What exactly are the religious leaders trying to do? 6. What is the question asked of Jesus in Luke 20:2? Considering all that we have seen in our study in Luke, how has Jesus already answered this question in word and deed? How does Jesus answer them and why do you think He asks this question? If Jesus refused to give the answer today, how would you answer the question? 7. Read the parable of the vineyard from Luke 20:9-19 and also Isaiah 5:1-7. Who does the vineyard represent and what is the owner expecting to receive? How do the tenants treat the servants of the owner and what does this reveal about their heart attitude? Describe what happens to the son. Who do you think the son represents in this parable? What prophetic message is Jesus trying to teach the leaders of Israel?
Women In the Word Luke 19:28 20:47 October 31, 2013 Page 3 8. Consider that each area of your life is God s vineyard where He expects to be the Lord and to receive good fruit. What are the areas where you claim ownership and deny God good fruit? What will you do to change this attitude? 9. Although Jesus doesn t directly answer their question, in Luke 20:17-18 He makes it clear that He is the capstone. Read these verses with Acts 4:8-12 and John 3:18. What do these verses tell us about Jesus, His authority and our responses to Him? 10. Read Luke 20: What are the true motives of the religious leaders who are asking these questions of Jesus? What are some of the reasons we ask questions of Jesus? Record some examples where we are looking for answers other than truth. 11. In Luke 20:47 we see Jesus asking one final question in response to the many questions about His authority. Jesus asks them how it is possible for the Christ to be the Son of David when David refers to Him in Psalm 110:1 as my Lord. Read Romans 1:3-4 and Luke 22:67-70 for additional insight. What important truth is Jesus presenting about the Christ (Messiah)? What expectation does this shatter? 12. Do you have a personal prayer request to share with your small group today?
Women In the Word October 31, 2013 Jesus-THE SAVIOR FOR ONE AND ALL True Disciples Recognize Jesus Jesus presents Himself as Messiah on His terms and in His timing. Jesus authority and royalty are declared by the people. Luke 19:29-40 Both true disciples and temporary disciples believe when they see and works of power. Rejection is declared by the religious leaders. Luke 19:41-44 Peace is available freedom from the consequences of sin. God expects everyone to Jesus as the way to peace. Unbelief always results in judgment. True disciples know God s words and recognize His grace toward sinners. When we hang on His every, the opposition has no power. Jesus authority is questioned. Luke 20:1-40 The parable of the vineyard prophesies the destruction of Jerusalem. The tax question reveals that everyone has both civic and spiritual obligations. The resurrection question reveals that all people are and they live out eternity with or without God. Jesus declares His deity! Luke 20:41-47 The term Lord is used to suggest equality with God. Messiah would be more than the Son of David, He would be the Son of! Beware: Don t go there! Religious leaders will be punished severely for unbelief. We are in danger when we redefine Jesus. Temporary disciples may lose all hope when Jesus doesn t satisfy their made-up expectations. When we reject Jesus authority and deity, He will reject us. Jesus will be declared as Messiah, Lord, Savior and King: Accepting this brings true peace. Key: miracles, recognize, word, eternal, God
Luke 19:28-20:47-Verse Sheet Women In the Word/October 31, 2013 Mark 1:24 What business do we have with each other, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us: I know who you are the Holy One of God! Jesus rebuked him, saying be quiet, and come out of him! Luke 9:51 As the time approached for Him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem. Luke 18:31 We are going up to Jerusalem, and everything that is written by the prophets about the Son of Man will be fulfilled. He will be handed over to the Gentiles. They will mock Him, insult Him, spit on Him, flog Him and kill Him. On the third day He will rise again. Zechariah 9:9 Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion! Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem! See, your King comes to you, righteous and having salvation, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. Psalm 96:11-13 Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad; let the sea resound, and all that is in it; let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them. Then all the trees of the forest will sing for joy; they will sing before the Lord, for He comes, He comes to judge the earth. Luke 4:36 All the people were amazed and said to each other, What is this teaching? With authority and power He gives orders to evil spirits and they come out? Mark 1:22 They were amazed at His teaching; for He was teaching them as one having authority, and not as the teachers of the law. Mark 1:27 What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him. Luke 3:22 and the Holy Spirit descended on Him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased. Psalm 80:8-9 You brought a vine out of Egypt; you drove out the nations and planted it. You cleared the ground for it, and it took root and filled the land. John 3:18 Whoever believes in Him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God s one and only son. John 3:19 This is the verdict: light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Luke 1:32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end. Zechariah 14:4 On that day His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, east of Jerusalem, and the Mount of Olives will be split in two, forming a great valley with half the mountain moving north and half the mountain moving south..v 9 And the Lord will be king over all the earth; in that day the Lord will be the only one, and His name the only one.
