Introduction Paul s letter moves from instructions concerning leaders to instructions concerning dangers. The chapter begins with a description of the dangers (vv.1-5); to a strategy of defenses against the dangers (vv.6-16). Once again Paul will denounce the dangers of heresy and heretics and the dangers of the Christian of living a life of inappropriate self-denial or self-indulgence (v.5). In brief Paul tells when to expect the danger and the source of the danger and the substance of the dangers. When Will The Danger Come? (v.1a) 1 Timothy 4:1a (NKJV)1Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times When will the danger come? Paul tells Timothy that the source of this information is the Holy Spirit. And the Spirit seems to indicate expressly that the danger comes in the latter times. The word expressly (rhetos) means specific or precise in plain words distinct words. Another word comes to mind unambiguous and so without doubt without question. What are the latter times? These are the days prior to the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ. The latter times begin with the resurrection of Jesus from the dead and continue until His glorious return (see Life Application Bible Commentary 1&2 Timothy & Titus p.74). It would appear in this context to mean an ever increasing growth in false teachers and false teaching that would require an ever increasing vigilance. Now the Spirit expressly says may be a reference to the repeated warning of Jesus and the apostles against false teachers and false teaching. The false teachers have arrived. Who Is Dangerous? (v. 1b;)...some False teachers. It would seem in Ephesus that a host of false teachers had made their way into the church fellowship and leadership. Paul had already warned them (Acts 20:29) and John would later record the Lord Jesus stinging rebuke; you have left your first love (Rev.2:2). Paul has already warned Timothy about those who teach another doctrine (1:3) who are preoccupied with fables and endless genealogies which cause disputes rather than edification in the faith (v.4); from which some, having strayed, have turned aside to idle talk, desiring to be teachers of the law, understanding neither what they say nor the things which they 1

affirm (chapter 1:6-7); they are guilty of idle talk empty chatter pointless monologues about worthless subjects. They violate their own conscience (1:19; 20) and Paul has already listed two examples; Hymenaeus and Alexander who would later deny the Biblical doctrine of the resurrection (see 2 Tim.2:17; 4:14). These false teachers Paul will later describe as proud people who really don t know anything; suffering from a kind of spirit deficit disorder; preoccupied with controversy; designed to produce envy, strife; they are absolutely willing to use abusive language and harbor evil suspicions; causing constant friction (chapter 6:4). They use the church and the brethren to gain a foothold and are willing to embrace so called facts of science which isn t science at all (see 6:20). 1 Timothy 6:3-5; If anyone teaches otherwise and does not consent to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness, he is proud, knowing nothing, but is obsessed with disputes and arguments over words, from which come envy, strife, reviling, evil suspicions, useless wrangling of men of corrupt minds and destitute of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain. From such withdraw yourself. 1 Timothy 6:20; O Timothy! Guard what was committed to your trust, avoiding the profane and vain babbling and contradictions of what is falsely called knowledge (science) by professing it, some have strayed concerning the faith. Withdraw. Avoid. Does that mean that we can never engage, or confront or refute the false teacher? Can we ever engage? Can we ever confront? We must give reasons for faith. We must give reasons for hope. Os Guiness writes; Some people think that having reasons for faith is an insult to God. But verification itself depends on the unchanging authority and stability of the Word of God. We are not insulting God but bringing glory to him by taking his Word as the stable, authoritative truth it is. What Dangerous Things Will They Do? (vv. 1c;2-3) will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, The dangers come from a departure from the faith (apostasy); but embracing teachings that come from lying spirits and demons. 2speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron, In short Paul draws out attention to four things that should cause us grave concern. 1. The false teachers depart from the faith. 2

2. The false teachers source materials are seducing spirits and doctrines of devils. 3. False teachers are notorious liars. Not simple liars but hypocritical liars. 4. False teachers have seared conscience cauterized, scared, hardened insensitive. In brief let s examine what that means. Abandon Christian Essentials Embrace Evil Spirits Proclaim Teachings contrary To Scripture Appear Insensitive To Truth And the Conviction Of The Holy Spirit Abandon Christian Essentials The essentials were in part talked about in chapter 3:15-16 where Paul makes reference to the role of the Church and the mystery of godliness: the incarnation of our Lord Jesus, His justification by the Holy Spirit; the earthly ministry of Jesus as seen by the angels and the Paul s preaching of the Gospel. What is truly at stake? What are the Christian essentials? What are the rock-bottom bare bones minimum that a person must believe and still retain what we call Christian faith? What things must be abandoned before we can safely say this person has departed from the faith? Paul has told Timothy about the ground or foundation of the truth (3:15) and the essentials of that truth. We must have a Biblical view of God. We must have a right view of Jesus. We must have a right view of the Gospel and Salvation. More than one-fifth of Millennials with a Christian background (21%) say Christian beliefs don't make sense to them Barna Group, May 19, 2013 What Do Christians Believe? God's unity - There is only one God God's triune nature - One God in three Persons Christ's virgin birth Human depravity - No one can win God's favor by their own efforts Christ's sinlessness Christ's deity Christ's humanity Necessity of God's grace Necessity of faith Christ's atoning death 3

Christ's bodily resurrection Christ's bodily ascension Christ's intercession Christ's second coming (Essentials of Christianity Norm Geisler; Rose Pamphlet) Embrace Evil Spirits The false teachers false teaching are energized by demons. William Barclay gives us a brief but powerful insight on men who become the unwitting dupes of Satan; It was from these evil spirits and demons that this false teaching came. But though it came from demons, it came through men...now here is the threatening and the terrible thing, We know that God and God s Spirit are everywhere looking for men to use. God is always searching for men who will be His instruments, His weapons, His tools in the world. But here we come face to face with the terrible fact that the forces of evil are also looking for men to use. Just as God seeks men for His purposes, the forces of evil seek men for their purposes. Here is the terrible responsibility of manhood. Man can accept the service of God, or the service of the devil. Man can become an instrument of the Supreme Good or the Supreme Evil. Men are faced with the eternal choice to whom are we to give our lives, to God or to God s enemy? Are we to decide to be used by God, or are we to decide to be used by the devil? (The Letters to Timothy, Titus and Philemon, p. 107). Proclaim Teachings contrary To Scripture The false teacher may retain certain teachings that are true and taught in Scripture. But the false teacher caves in to the pressure of either adding error to the truth and wind up promoting error and eroding truth. The false teacher uses the methods of persuasion, seduction, deceit. Appear Insensitive To Truth And the Conviction Of The Holy Spirit Paul s words are strong; the false teachers are liars, hypocrites and hardened. In the most simple language possible the false teachers first deny the things that are in the Bible; and then add things not found in the Bible. The false teacher teaches things not found in the Scriptures. Some teachers take pride in their false teachings reminding their disciples that the average person would be unable to understand what they are saying by simply reading the Bible. Their boast confirms their lies. Speaking lies means speaking those things contrary to the Scriptures. In hypocrisy means the person knows what they are saying is contrary to the Scripture. The 4

false teacher denies, ignores, refutes, twists or tortures the Biblical text in order to support their unbiblical position or their bizarre beliefs. Do not deceive one another (Lev.19:11). The Greek philosopher Demosthenes said, Nothing is so easy as to deceive oneself; for what we wish, we readily believe. The false teacher wants the Bible s version of Christ and Salvation to be untrue. Therefore the demon s invitation to believe something else is quite appealing. The Holy s Spirit conviction is ignored and the lie embraced. 3forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from foods which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. The false teacher is not content with promoting false doctrine but requires their disciples to embrace false living. The false teachers seemed to ignore the fact that marriage was a gift from God; established by God and defined by God as a covenant between one man and one woman for life (Genesis 2:23-25; Hebrews 13:4 marriage is honorable ; and Matthew 19:3-9; v.6; so then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate ). We can add to the list of things false teachers delight in doing; forbidding what the Bible allows; and allowing what the Bible forbids....false teachers will abound loving money and attention, distorting the truth, dividing believers, and causing many to go astray as they follow deceitful spirits and teachings of demons...these participants in the church will renounce the faith, even though they may appear to still be faithful believers... (Life Application Bible Commentary; Timothy & Titus pp ). Why do Jesus and Paul and Peter and Jude give such a detailed description of the false teachers and their false teachings? In part so that we would recognize and confront them and not allow them to poison our fellowship. Why Are They Wrong? (vv.4-5) We must allow what the Bible allows and forbid what the Bible forbids. How do we do that? How do we determine what is allowed and what is forbidden? Paul argues that everything God created is good and does not necessarily have to be rejected (v.4). Everything God created is made holy (separate) by God s word and prayer (v.5). 5

4For every creature of God is good, and nothing is to be refused if it is received with thanksgiving; 5for it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer. Paul gives the example of food or diet. It would appear that the dominant false teaching that had invaded Ephesus was Gnosticism. The Gnostics ultimately believed that spirit was good and matter was evil. Everything in the world all physical and material substances were therefore tainted or corrupt of evil. In the Gnostic view the goal was to deny the body as much as possible (radical asceticism) and promote the spiritual as much as possible (a radical mysticism). The two things being denied in Ephesus were meats and marriage. The Gnostics seemed to promote that the idea that a vegetarian diet and a celibate life were the best way to deny the flesh and promote a life-style of super spiritual benefit. The opposite was also true. Some Gnostics thought that because the body and material reality was inherently evil you could either indulge the body or deny the body but the only thing that really mattered was the internal spirit being. What were the Christians in Ephesus being asked to believe? To wage war against aging by health or diet? Were they talking Paul s own words that a celibate life-style would allow the person to pursue spiritual disciplines and duty without the unnecessary encumbrances of marriage? Paul clearly has spelled out that the normal characteristics of Christian leadership and service include marriage (1 Timothy 3:2-13). The Christian is often tempted to drift to one of two extremes; legalism or license (see Galatians 5:1-26). It would appear that at least some had come to the conclusion that the Christian had unlimited freedom and others that the prohibitions and restrictions given in the Law were still in force. Paul argues that the true Christian sanctified by the Word of God and prayer to God must of necessity be true to God the Word of God. True Christian belief and living undermines the false teachers doctrine and life-style. The Wycliffe Bible Commentary is most helpful; The principles governing the right use...of this life are: (a) God is the Creator and his creation is good; (b) He created food for men, and those who believe and know the truth about eternal salvation will have the right attitude toward the necessities of this life, and will neither 6

deify the created thing or degrade and despise it, but will accept it thankfully as the Father s wise provision (Quoted from First and Second Timothy, Titus. The New Testament and Wycliffe Bible Commentary; p. 854). Between two evils, choose neither; between two goods, choose both. Conclusion Am I in danger? You Might Be In A Cult If... T. Edwards You have abandoned Biblical teachings. You worship a different God other than the God of the Bible. You believe a different Jesus other than the one revealed in the Bible. You embrace a different salvation other than the one declared in the Bible. You must abstain from things allowed in the Bible. You must do things forbidden in the Bible. Hold fast to the teachings of Scripture. Hold fast to the identity of the Lord Jesus Christ. Hold fast to salvation by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone. Hold fast to your freedom in Christ. Anything that dims my vision for Christ, or takes away my taste for Bible study, or cramps me in my prayer life, or makes Christian work difficult, is wrong for me; and I must, as a Christian turn away from it.
