Lesson #4-28 (3rd-6th) Palm/Passion Sunday, March 25, 2018 Background for Teachers Story Connections God s Kingdom is revealed in Jesus sacrificial giving for those around him. This stands in sharp contrast to the squabbling political and religious powers of this world that often attempt to overwhelm or undermine each other with either brute force or wily manipulation. God s kingdom does not overpower evil by playing Rome s game, but rather by giving life through Jesus. Story Summary: A Different Kind of King As this text opens we find a crowd of people gathered along the road into Jerusalem to welcome Jesus. He is welcomed with shouts of Hosanna! which means save us. They are excited because they have heard about him, his miracles, his sermons, and his compassion. But not everyone was happy to see Jesus and the followers he had. The temple priests had long been upset with Jesus for both his miracles and his message. They regarded his claim to be the Son of God as blasphemy. To get rid of Jesus, the priests and the local Roman government worked together. The story of Jesus dying on a cross is a love story. It is a story of God s love and Jesus love for us. Jesus love for us is so strong that he was willing to make this painful and humiliating sacrifice. Jesus understands us in such an intimate and personal way because he was willing to go to the cross. He understands when we go through pain, humiliation, rejection, betrayal and loss. The Point Both the crowds and Pilate say more than they know by calling Jesus a king. What kind of king is this? He rides into town in glory on a borrowed donkey, and in less than a week is facing crucifixion. This is not the king that the masses had hoped for or the prophets predicted. Yet even those who oppose and seek to silence him unknowingly point to his kingship. Bible Nuts and Bolts: Difficult Passages The Bible includes a number of passages that believers may find difficult. Some of these passages are simply confusing. Others are not confusing, but offend our sense of right or wrong. Passages dealing with slavery, haircuts, marriage, foods, and even God s love may be difficult. In the midst of these difficult passages, we remember that God provides blessings, God protects God s people, and God calls and sends us. Spiritual Practice: Worship We show our love to God through worship. Our worship expression can utilize many of our senses. This week we experience worship visually through a prayer that focuses on the symbols of Holy Week by working together to create their own worship area. 4

Lesson #4-28 (3rd-6th) Palm/Passion Sunday, March 25, 2018 Lesson Plan Experience the joy and excitement of Palm Sunday. You will need: Balloons Before class: 1. Inflate the balloons. 2. Be aware of any latex allergies your students may have. If there is an allergy, create palm branches from construction paper and craft sticks. During class: 1. We are going to have a balloon parade. Everyone get a balloon and follow me. Lead the students around the room waving their balloons. Start the parade walking in silence, then act more excited and say things like Hooray!, Celebrate!, and Rejoice! Encourage students to get more into the activity as time passes. 2. Did you find the more you got involved in the parade, the more fun you had? [Yes.] 3. Our story today starts with people who were very excited to greet Jesus as he came into Jerusalem for Passover, but they acted very differently just five short days later. 5

Lesson #4-28 (3rd-6th) Palm/Passion Sunday, March 25, 2018 Facing a difficult passage. You will need: Bible Paper Wooden or cardboard cross Thumb tacks Pencils Crayons Optional: meditative background music During class: 1. Our Bible passage today tells the story of Jesus crucifixion. Show students where the story is in the Bible. There are lots of sad and confusing things in our Bible, and sometimes we wonder what they mean and why they are in there. 2. Jesus dying seems like a really bad thing. Why would God send his only son to earth just to die? If God knows everything, then God must have known that Jesus had to die. So why would God put Jesus through something like that? 3. Jesus did it because of his love for us. We are going to write or draw a thank you to Jesus for what he has done for us. Give students time to write or draw their thank you. Help them with spelling as needed. 4. When you have written (or drawn) your thank you to Jesus, we will pin them to the cross. This seems like a sad thing to do, but sometimes things that seem sad or confusing turn out to be good in the end. And Jesus dying on the cross seems sad and confusing, but in the end he comes back to life on Easter. And that is the best news ever! 5. Let s pray. Dear Jesus, we are so glad for the many things you have done for us. You love us so much that you were willing to die for us. On this Palm Sunday we especially want to say thank you. You did not have to die on the cross, but because of your love for us, you chose to. Thank you for this incredible gift. Amen. 6

Lesson #4-28 (3rd-6th) Palm/Passion Sunday, March 25, 2018 Act out a skit along the road. You will need: Bibles Activity Sheet #4-28.A Highlighters Nametags for the different parts (Believers, Curious people, Doubter, Andrew, Peter, Nathanael, Religious Leaders) Palm branches Before class: 1. Make copies of Activity Sheet #4-28.A, one for each student. During class: 1. Our story today continues in the Gospel of John. Invite students to find John 19:16b-22 in their Bibles. 2. We are all going to participate in a skit to tell today s story. Give each student a copy of Activity Sheet #4-28.A. Distribute parts to the students and give them time to highlight their lines. 3. Perform the skit, and repeat if time allows. 4. Let s talk about that story a little bit. Why do you think so many people showed up when Jesus came to Jerusalem? [They were curious, they wanted to see a miracle, they hoped to see the man who would be king, the priests were worried about what might happen.] How would you feel if you could have been there? [Happy, hopeful, excited, nervous.] 5. Why were people surprised when Jesus was arrested? [They thought a king could not be treated that way, they did not think Jesus deserved to be arrested.] 6. How do you think Jesus disciples felt when they saw Jesus get arrested? [Scared about what would happen to them, angry Jesus was treated badly, depressed to see Jesus taken away, shocked that their teacher and leader is gone.] 7

Lesson #4-28 (3rd-6th) Palm/Passion Sunday, March 25, 2018 Work together to create a worship center. You will need: Activity Sheet #4-28.B Towel 30 dimes Picture of handcuffs Cross Crown of thorns Dice Vinegar Rock Before class: 1. Select an area where students will put the objects for the worship center. During class: 1. We just acted out Jesus entry into Jerusalem. It was an exciting and fun day when Jesus came to town riding on a donkey. But the next part of the story is sad. Let s work together to create a worship center while I tell you about what happened next. 2. Direct students to the area you have designated for your worship space. Have items to place in worship area at hand. 3. Let s go over to where we will create the worship center. First let s have a moment of quiet to get ready to worship together. 4. Follow the instructions on Activity Sheet #4-28.B. 5. Close with prayer: Dear Jesus, we do not like leaving you in the tomb. It makes us sad and frustrated. Sometimes these things are hard to understand. But we know that this story has a happy ending, and so we are willing to wait. Amen. 8

Lesson #4-28 (3rd-6th) Palm/Passion Sunday, March 25, 2018 Light shines through Holy Week symbols. You will need: Activity Sheet #4-28.C Black construction paper Crayons Box grater Wax paper Iron Towels Optional: ironing board Before class: 1. Use box grater to grate crayons into small shavings. 2. Print Activity Sheet #4-28.C and trace symbols onto cardboard or poster board. Cut them out to create stencils for students to use. During class: 1. Today we are going to make stained glass symbols of the Holy Week story. Even through all of the sad things that happened during Holy Week, God s love still shined through it all. These symbols will help us to remember the light in times that might seem dark. 2. Give each student a piece of black construction paper. They can choose the palm or the cross symbol, and trace it onto the construction paper. 3. Cut out the symbol, and lay it under a piece of wax paper. 4. Place crayon shavings on the wax paper in a thin, even layer marching the symbol. 5. Place another piece of wax paper on top of the shavings. 6. Place a towel on the surface you will iron on to protect it if you are not using an ironing board. 7. Use an iron, set on low, to melt the crayon shavings. 8. When the wax paper has cooled, trim around the edges of the symbol. 9

Lesson #4-28 (3rd-6th) Palm/Passion Sunday, March 25, 2018 What type of king is Jesus? You will need: Pictures of ornate crowns Picture of a crown of thorns Before class: 1. Search the Internet for several images of crowns and a crown of thorns. During class: 1. We know many people were excited when Jesus came to Jerusalem. But the story does not stop here. It takes a turn from celebration to sadness. What kind of king were the people expecting? [Someone who would get rid of the Romans, someone who would take care of their physical needs, a military leader.] 2. Show the images from the Internet. Which crown would they have wanted Jesus to wear? Show several different images, and let students discuss each one. End with the crown of thorns image. 3. Jesus was really most interested in our relationship with God and how we treated others, especially the poor and outsiders. God was concerned about the state of our hearts, not with who was ruling the country. 4. Which crown did Jesus end up wearing? [Crown of thorns.] Jesus did not even choose this crown, but he wore it willingly because of his love for us. 10

Lesson #4-28 (3rd-6th) Palm/Passion Sunday, March 25, 2018 Write a responsive prayer for worship. You will need: Activity Sheet #4-28.D White board or mural paper Pencils Before class: 1. Check with the pastor of worship leaders to see if there is a time during Holy Week that the class can help lead the litany that they create. During class: 1. Our church is full of symbols of Jesus and his kingship. We are going to spend All of us are afraid of something. What are some things that frighten you? Write a list on the white board or mural paper. 2. How you handle being scared is really important. What do you do when you are scared? [Hide, run to my parents, turn on a light, cry.] We all act differently we when are scared. 3. What do you think adults are afraid of? Write a list on the white board or mural paper. 4. What do you think grown-ups do when they are scared? [Cry, yell, hide, act mad.] 5. Did you know that some people were afraid of Jesus? All the things he talked about and the miracles he performed were different and new. People sometimes are afraid of things that are new. The temple priests and Roman officials were scared about the changes that could happen because of Jesus. And because of their fear, they crucified Jesus. 6. We are going to create a special prayer for worship that will help people talk about fear. It is repetitive, so you will repeat the same phrases over and over. And it is responsive, so the members of the congregation will answer after you say your line. 7. Distribute Activity Sheet #4-28.D. Fill in the blanks as a group. Decide who is willing to read in front of the congregation. Make sure parents are aware of dates and times if you will be leading in worship. 11

Lesson #4-28 (3rd-6th) Palm/Passion Sunday, March 25, 2018 Optional ongoing activity. You will need: Bible Book page (found at end of lesson) Cardstock or plain paper Pens Markers or crayons Optional: three-ring binders, hole punch Before class: 1. Make copies of this week s Bible Book page on cardstock or copy paper for each student. During class: 1. Hand out Bible Book pages. 2. What are some of the important things we have learned from today s story? [Answers will vary.] 3. On the bottom of your page, please write one or two important things that you have learned from the story today. In the middle of the page, draw a picture from the story or illustrate one of the important things you ve learned. Don t forget to put your name on the back of the page, please! 4. Optional: Collect and three-hole punch the pages, and put them in individual binders for each student to be kept at church until the end of the year. If you wish, you can investigate other options for binding the Bible books through a local print shop at the end of the year instead of using a three-ring binder. 12

Lesson #4-28 (3rd-6th) Palm/Passion Sunday, March 25, 2018 Review the lesson. Remind participants that we pray for the coming of God s kingdom in the Lord s Prayer. Invite students to crouch on the floor in a small ball. As you pray the Lord s Prayer together, begin with a whisper and continue to get louder. As you increase the volume, move from the crouched position to standing and reaching for the sky. 13

Activity Sheet #4-28.A Lesson #4-28 (3rd-6th) Palm/Passion Sunday, March 25, 2018 Characters The Roads to Golgatha Act out a skit along the road. Believers Curious people The Doubter Andrew Peter Nathanael Religious Leaders Have students wear nametags to show which part they are playing. For scene one, palm branches can be waved by Believers, Curious and Doubters. All three scenes in this skit take place on a road. Designate an area to be the road where the action takes place. Scene One: Sunday, the road from Bethany leading into Jerusalem. People have gathered by the road to see Jesus as he enters Jerusalem. They are waving palm branches and spreading their cloaks on the ground. Jesus disciples, including Andrew, Peter, and Nathanael, walk on the road waving to the people who have gathered. Believers: (Excited and pointing down the road.) He s coming to town! He s coming to town! Save us Jesus! Hosanna! Andrew: (To Peter) Never thought I d be here. Three years ago I was a fisherman. I only thought about catching fish and getting the smell off my hands. Look at me now, part of Jesus posse! Peter: Jesus is coming here now to get things set right! When he becomes king he ll throw the Romans out of power. The Messiah is supposed to bring peace, so the Romans have to be out of here for that to happen, right? Curious people: It s him! It s Jesus! Hasn t he healed people, even brought the dead back to life? I wonder what he could do for me? Religious Leaders: (To themselves) Some king! Are these his advisors, fisherman and tax collectors? He s nothing but a troublemaker. He stirs the people up with this kingdom talk. And claims to be the Son of God! That s blasphemy! No one can say that! The Doubter: (To himself) I don t know. We ve had others before, claiming to be the Messiah. I ll wait and see what happens. Believers: (Talking to the Doubter) But have you heard what he s done? On the mountain beside the Sea of Galilee this Jesus fed thousands of people. With Jesus as king, we ll never be hungry again! Jesus the King will protect us and keep us from harm. Jesus will love us and make sure we are taken care of. Nathanael: Remember that first miracle? You ll never forget the first miracle you ever see. That wedding party in Cana was going down fast, but Jesus saved them from embarrassment. He had the servers dip out of the water jugs, which had miraculously become wine! (Shake head in amazement.) 15

Activity Sheet #4-28.A Lesson #4-28 (3rd-6th) Palm/Passion Sunday, March 25, 2018 The Roads to Golgatha Act out a skit along the road. Peter: I m sure the family thought it was nice, but that was nothing compared to when he healed the official s son! That boy was really sick, and Jesus healed him. Jesus wasn t even anywhere near him! Jesus just said the boy would be better and it happened! Andrew: I was amazed when Jesus healed the man born blind! And I am still thinking about when Jesus said he is the light of the world! We ve seen all these amazing miracles! Imagine the miracles when he becomes King! Religious Leaders: (Toward the disciples and others, shaking their fingers) The Romans are not happy with this self-proclaimed King of the Jews! Trouble with the Romans is the last thing we need! You know what that will mean heads will roll! Scene Two: Friday, walking toward the high priest s courtyard. Disciples are together. Believers walked toward the Disciples from stage right. The Curious and Doubter walk past the Religious Leaders on stage left, overhearing them and then commenting to the Disciples and Believers. Peter: (To the other disciples) Terrible news! Roman soldiers arrested Jesus while he was praying in the garden. They say he will be tried before the high priest. Religious Leaders: (To themselves) Good news! One of Jesus disciples gave his location away to us and even now at this early hour Jesus stands before the high priest for his crimes. If all goes well, he ll be sent to Pilate as well. Believers: Have you heard? They arrested Jesus! They can t do that! He is the one who will set us free! He is the one to fulfill the prophecies! Curious people: I heard he wouldn t even defend himself. Wouldn t say a word! Wouldn t a king put up more of a fight? The Doubter: Maybe this man wasn t the Messiah. The priests sure don t think so! Wouldn t they know best? Nathanael: (Covers eyes with hand and bows head down.) I can t believe this has happened! This man we have loved and followed, this man who has shown us God s love and miracles, this man is going to be killed in a horrible way. He s going to be crucified and I just don t understand it! Scene Three: Friday, on the road to Golgotha, after Pilate decides Jesus will be crucified. Disciples and Believers walk together. Curious and Doubter join them. Religious Leaders follow behind these groups, listening to what they have to say. Believers: (Shocked) Look, he s even carrying his own cross! I can t bear to see Jesus on a cross. Curious people: (Doubtful) I don t think that s the Messiah, it s just the carpenter s son. 16

Activity Sheet #4-28.A Lesson #4-28 (3rd-6th) Palm/Passion Sunday, March 25, 2018 The Roads to Golgatha Act out a skit along the road. The Doubter: (Sadly) Must have been trickery, all those so-called miracles! Five days ago he was welcomed as a king and now he s just a common criminal. Peter: (Hopeful) Maybe he ll show his power from on the cross. Lightning and fire, some grand display of power and he ll come down! Curious people: There s no escaping the cross. What kind of king lets himself be killed on a cross? Kings have power and authority. They wouldn t let anyone put them on a cross. Religious Leaders: Now things will quiet down for us. Jesus followers will all go into hiding. It s the end of this Messiah nonsense. I just wish Pilate hadn t put the sign up over Jesus that says he is the King of the Jews. 17

Activity Sheet #4-28.B Lesson #4-28 (3rd-6th) Palm/Passion Sunday, March 25, 2018 Worship at the Cross Work together to create a worship center. Do you remember what special festival the Israelites had gathered in Jerusalem for? [Passover] At Passover, Jews have a special meal together. After the meal was over, Jesus did something for his disciples that is not usually done at Passover. He got up from the table, took off his robe, put a towel around his waist, and knelt before each disciple and washed their feet. After Jesus and the disciples had their meal together, Jesus went to a garden to pray, and his disciples went with him. The Jewish leaders who were mad at Jesus were looking for him, and they offered Judas 30 pieces of silver to lead them to Jesus. And Judas accepted. For 30 pieces of silver, Judas took the priests and soldiers to where Jesus was praying, and they arrested Jesus. Have a student place a towel on the worship center. Have a student place 30 dimes on the worship center. So the soldiers took Jesus to a Roman leader named Pilate. And very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus was put on trial. Do you know what that means? [Criminals get put on trial, you stand before a judge, you get punished.] A trial is when a person gets accused of doing something wrong, people bring proof of what they have done that is wrong, and then they get punished for doing something wrong. Jesus was given the punishment of being crucified, which means the soldiers would nail him to a cross. And so they made Jesus carry the cross to a place called Golgotha. The soldiers made fun of Jesus They made a crown out of thorny branches and put it on his head. The soldiers noticed how nice Jesus robe was, so they took it off of him and threw dice to see who would get it. When Jesus was hanging on the cross, he told the soldiers he was thirsty, and they gave him a drink of wine vinegar. After Jesus died, his body was laid in a tomb, and a large rock was rolled in front of the tomb. Have a student put a picture of handcuffs on the worship center. Have a student put a cross on the worship center. Have a student place a crown of thorns on the worship center. Have a student place dice on the worship center. Have a student place vinegar on the worship center. Have a student place a rock on the worship center. 19

The Home 3 rd -6 th Living the Word: Teaching Kids God s Story Narrative Lectionary, Year 4 ( ) Lesson #4-28 John 19:16b-22 [12:12-27] Last Week Roman soldiers mock Jesus as King of the Jews. They strike him, put a crown of thorns on his head, and drape him in a purple cloak. This Week Pilate s soldiers crucify Jesus and will post an inscription that will call Jesus The King of the Jews. Story Summary Jesus is welcomed to Jerusalem by crowds shouting Hosanna! But not everyone was happy to see Jesus. The temple priests had been upset with Jesus for both his miracles and his message. Practice: Worship We show our love to God through worship. Our worship expression can utilize many of our senses. This week we experience worship visually through a prayer activity and scripture reading that focuses on symbols from Holy Week. Create your own family altar this week by adding one element from the Try It At Home readings to a table or central space each day (see below). The Point Both the crowds and Pilate say more than they know by calling Jesus a king. Bible Nuts & Bolts Difficult Passages The Bible includes a number of passages that believers may find difficult. Some of these passages are simply confusing. Others are not confusing, but offend our sense of right or wrong. Passages dealing with slavery, haircuts, marriage, foods, cotton-polyester blend clothing, and even God s love may be difficult. In the midst of these difficult passages, we remember that God provides blessings, God protects God s people, and God calls and sends us. Next Week In an extended lesson, Mary recognizes Jesus and hears his command to go tell the disciples about his resurrection. After having appeared to only one disciple (Mary), Jesus appears to a group of his disciples for the first time, and discusses with Thomas the relationship between seeing and believing.

Family HOME Lesson #4-28 John 19:16b-22 [12:12-27] Use the questions below or other questions you think of to discuss today s Scripture reading (listed above) with your family.
