1 Introduction to the Book of Titus Salutation Qualifications of Bishops Titus 1:1-16.

2 Introduction to the Book of Titus Salutation Qualifications of Bishops Text: Titus 1:1-16, 1. Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God's elect, and the acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness; 2. In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began; 3. But hath in due times manifested his word through preaching, which is committed unto me according to the commandment of God our Saviour; 4. To Titus, mine own son after the common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour. 5. For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee: 6. If any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly. 7. For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; not selfwilled, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy lucre; 8. But a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men, sober, just, holy, temperate; 9. Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers. 10. For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision:

3 11. Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre's sake. 12. One of themselves, even a prophet of their own, said, the Cretians are alway liars, evil beasts, slow bellies. 13. This witness is true. Wherefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith; 14. Not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the truth. 15. Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled. 16. They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate. Introduction: I. Titus, the person. A. There is no mention of Titus in the books of Acts. B. Titus was a partner and fellow worker of Paul Corinthians 8:23, Whether any do enquire of Titus, he is my partner and fellowhelper concerning you: or our brethren be enquired of, they are the messengers of the churches, and the glory of Christ. C. Titus served as a test case proving that Gentiles did not have to be circumcised in order to be saved. 1. Galatians 2:1-3, Then fourteen years after I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, and took Titus with me also. And I went up by revelation, and communicated unto them that gospel which I preach among the Gentiles, but privately

4 to them which were of reputation, lest by any means I should run, or had run, in vain. But neither Titus, who was with me, being a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised: D. Titus served as a courier taking Paul s letters to the troubled church in Corinth and bringing news back from Corinth to Paul Corinthians 7:5, 16, For, when we were come into Macedonia, our flesh had no rest, but we were troubled on every side; without were fightings, within were fears. I rejoice therefore that I have confidence in you in all things Corinthians 2:12, 13, Furthermore, when I came to Troas to preach Christ's gospel, and a door was opened unto me of the Lord, I had no rest in my spirit, because I found not Titus my brother: but taking my leave of them, I went from thence into Macedonia. E. Titus was involved in completing the collection for the poor saints in Jerusalem Corinthians 8:6, 16-24, Insomuch that we desired Titus, that as he had begun, so he would also finish in you the same grace also. But thanks be to God, which put the same earnest care into the heart of Titus for you. For indeed he accepted the exhortation; but being more forward, of his own accord he went unto you. And we have sent with him the brother, whose praise is in the gospel throughout all the churches; And not that only, but who was also chosen of the churches to travel with us with this grace, which is administered by us to the glory of the same Lord, and declaration of your ready mind: Avoiding this, that no man should blame us in this abundance which is administered by us: Providing for honest things, not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of men. And we have sent with them our brother, whom we have oftentimes proved diligent in many things, but now

5 much more diligent, upon the great confidence which I have in you. Whether any do enquire of Titus, he is my partner and fellowhelper concerning you: or our brethren be enquired of, they are the messengers of the churches, and the glory of Christ. Wherefore shew ye to them, and before the churches, the proof of your love, and of our boasting on your behalf Corinthians 2:18, I desired Titus, and with him I sent a brother. Did Titus make a gain of you? walked we not in the same spirit? walked we not in the same steps? F. Titus was charged with confronting false teachers on the island of Crete and then to meet Paul in Nicopolis on the west coast of Greece. 1. Titus 1:5, For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee: 2. Titus 3:12, When I shall send Artemas unto thee, or Tychicus, be diligent to come unto me to Nicopolis: for I have determined there to winter. G. Titus is last mentioned in scripture as being on his way to preach in Dalmatia, now Yugoslavia Timothy 4:10, For Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world, and is departed unto Thessalonica; Crescens to Galatia, Titus unto Dalmatia. H. Titus was a truly faithful and dedicated Christian of whom Paul was highly complimentary Corinthians 8:17, For indeed he accepted the exhortation; but being more forward, of his own accord he went unto you.

Corinthians 7:6, Nevertheless God, that comforteth those that are cast down, comforted us by the coming of Titus; Credit: The above information was taken from Nelson s New Illustrated Bible Dictionary, Ronald F. Youngblood, F.F. Bruce and R.K. Harrison, Thomas Nelson Publishers, Nashville, II. Titus, the epistle. A. Titus is one of the three pastoral epistles, the other two being 1 and 2 Timothy, so-called because they deal with the shepherding of God s people. B. Titus was written between 64 A.D. and 68 A.D. by Paul during the reign of Nero between the dates when 1 and 2 Timothy were written, 2 Timothy being Paul s last epistle. C. Spence via Coffman expressed the view that Titus was written by Paul after his release from his First Roman imprisonment while on his way to Nicopolis perhaps in 65 or 66 A.D. Credit: James Burton Coffman Commentaries, 1 and 2 Thessalonians, 1 and 2 Timothy, Titus and Philemon, Ablilene Christian University Press, Abilene, TX, D. Titus is very much like 1 Timothy. Only two passengers in Titus have no corresponding material in 1 Timothy; viz., 1. Titus 2:11-14, For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.

7 2. Titus 3:3-7, For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another. But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life. E. Titus deals with good works by which the disciples would be able to influence non-christians. 1. Titus 1:8, 16, But a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men, sober, just, holy, temperate; They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate. 2. Titus 2:7, In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity, 3. Titus 3:1, 8, 14, Put them in mind to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates, to be ready to every good work, This is a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men. And let our's also learn to maintain good works for necessary uses, that they be not unfruitful. 4. Titus 2:5, 7, 8, 10, 11, To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed. In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity, Sound speech, that cannot be condemned;

8 that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you. Not purloining, but shewing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things. For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, 5. Titus 3:1, 8, Put them in mind to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates, to be ready to every good work, This is a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men. Credit: C. Michael Moss. The College Press NIV Commentary, College Press Publishing Company, Joplin, Missouri, III. Titus, epistle outline. A. 9 9 Commentary: Salutation 1 Titus 1:1, Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God's elect, and the acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness; I. Paul, II. a servant (slave) of God, A. Some Roman slaves had been captured in war while others were born into slavery. B. Paul became a slave of diety by means of the new birth. C. Paul s and our servitude is voluntary. D. Romans 1:1, Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God, III. and an apostle of Jesus Christ, A. Paul emphasized his apostleship here in order to encourage young and weak Christians to heed his instructions. IV. according to, with a view to: A. the faith of God s elect, 1. Romans 8:33, Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth. 2. Colossians 3:12, Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;

Timothy 2:10, Therefore I endure all things for the elect's sakes, that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. 4. Paul is the only New Testament writer to use the expression God s elect. 5. God s elect is a reference to those who have chosen, elected to follow Jesus. B. and the knowledge of the truth which leads to, is according to godliness, 1. Truth in mathematics and science will not lead to godliness. 2. The gospel truth of which Paul wrote produced godliness Timothy 2:4, Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth Timothy 2:25, In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; 5. 2 Timothy 3:7, Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth Timothy 2:2, For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty Timothy 3:16, And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

11 1 Titus 1:2, In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began; I. a faith and knowledge resting in hope of eternal life, A. Paul was in hope of eternal life, as are Christians today. B. Knight via Moss thought Paul was here speaking of a hope which Paul, an apostle, shared with all other faithful Christians. C. Hope is earnest expectation. II. which God, who cannot lie, A. God promised eternal life. God cannot lie. Eternal life is, therefore, a definite thing for the righteous. III. promised before times eternal; A. Eternal life for the devout was promised by God, originated with God before time as we know it ever began. Titus 1:3, But hath in due times manifested his word through preaching, which is committed unto me according to the commandment of God our Saviour; I. but at his appointed season, in his own seasons A. God chose the times to reveal, implement his plans regarding eternal life. II. manifested his word (gospel messge) in the message, A. The promise of eternal life is revealed in the gospel. B. The Old Testament said very little about life everlasting leaving the servants of God in a state of uncertainty regarding what awaited them after death.

12 C. Scriptures: 1. Titus 1:9, Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers. 2. Titus 2:5, To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed Timothy 2:9, 15, Wherein I suffer trouble, as an evil doer, even unto bonds; but the word of God is not bound. Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth Timothy 4:2, Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long suffering and doctrine. III. Wherewith I was entrusted according to the commandment of God our Saviour; A. John 14:6, Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. B. 1 John 1:1, That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life; C. 1 Timothy 1:1, Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the commandment of God our Saviour, and Lord Jesus Christ, which is our hope; D. Moss remarked that Paul had been given a sacred trust in regard to the gospel and he always faithfully proclaimed it.

13 Titus 1:4, To Titus, mine own son after the common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour. I. To Titus, II. my true, legitimate child after a common faith: A. This typically refer to those converted by a particular person known as the father Timothy 1:2, Unto Timothy, my own son in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord. B. There is no biblical reference to the conversion of Titus. C. The shared common faith united Paul and Titus with Christ, the Saviour, and with each other. III. Grace IV. and peace V. from God the Father VI. and Christ Jesus our Saviour. Qualifications of Bishops Titus 1:5, For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee: I. For this cause left I thee in Crete, A. Nothing is otherwise known of Paul s and Titus work on the island of Crete, but Titus remained in Crete after Paul departed.

14 B. It is thought that this work was done following Paul s release from his first Roman imprisonment. C. This was not the occasion of Acts 27:8, And, hardly passing it, came unto a place which is called The fair havens; nigh whereunto was the city of Lasea. II. that thou shouldest set in order, straighten out the things that were wanting, what was left unfinished, A. Crete was located in the Mediterranean Sea approximately equal distances from Asia, Europe, and Asia. B. Coffman wrote that Crete was the cradle of the ancient Minoan civilization that a temple of Bacchus was there, that some 100 cities were on the island and that Crete was famous for its wines. C. Things were not spiritually right among Cretan believers and Titus was charged to set things right there. D. Some Cretans heard Paul preach on Pentecost and may have taken the gospel home with them. 1. Acts 2:11, Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God. III. and appoint elders in every city, A. More than one elder was to be appointed to oversee the work in each location. B. Acts 6:7, And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith. IV. as I gave thee charge; as I directed you.

15 A. Appointment of elders is to be done in keeping with apostolic directions. B. The church in Crete faced dangers from false teachers from certain Jesus, those of the circumcision, who were to be confronted by these elders being appointed. Titus 1:6, If any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly. I. If any man A. It is clear that Paul intended for men to occupy the eldership office. B. Compare the qualifications for bishops in 1 Timothy 3:1-7 with these instructions given to Titus Timothy 3:1-7, This is a true saying, if a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work. A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach; Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous; One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity; (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?) Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil. Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil. Note: Elders are to be exemplary in family matters, personal characteristics and faithfulness to Christ and his word. II. is blameless, A. Elders are to be above reproach.

16 III. the husband of but one wife, one woman s man,... A. Heads of families were the only ones to be considered for the eldership. B. This excludes the single men, those involved with polygamous relationships and the unscripturally divorced and remarried from consideration. (Coffman) IV. having children that believe, A. The candidates for elders are not only to have children, but the children must be firm believers in Christ. B. They must also be loyal to their father. (Moss) C. They must be faithful Christians. V. who are not accused of riot, being wild, or unruly, disobedient. A. accused: B. riot: C. unruly: 1. Children with bad reputations disqualify their fathers from consideration as elders in the church Timothy 3:4. One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity; 2. An elder s children are to be submissive. 1. An elder s children are to be obedient.

17 Titus 1:7, For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; not selfwilled, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy lucre; I. For the bishop A. Bishop (overseer) and elder (presbyter) refer to the same church office. II. must be blameless, A. This means, as previously stated, without reproach III. as God s steward; that is one to whom God s work has been entrusted A. Elders (presbyters) and Bishops (overseers) are here called stewards. B. Elders are entrusted with the welfare of God s people and the responsibility to preach only the true faith once for all delivered to the saints. C. 1 Timothy 3:2, 3, A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach; Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous; Note: Avoidance of negative, sinful characteristics is vital as is the adding of positive characteristics. IV. not self-willed, not overbearing, A. A hard headed elder can destroy a congregation. B. Fee via Moss wrote, God s household manager must be a servant, not stubbornly self-willed, since it is God s household, not his own.

18 V. not soon angry, not quick tempered, A. Moss further wrote, an ill temper will render him ineffective, since he must patiently deal with brothers and sisters in the church. ( who can certainly upset him.) VI. no striker, A. Coffman observed that striker, in 1611 when the King James Version was written, referred to those who went around thumping other people on the head with a quarterstaff. It has no reference to labor disputes. VII. no brawler, not violent, VIII. not greedy of filthy lucre; not pursuing dishonest gain. A. Filthy lucre is dirty money; that is money acquired through questionable or dishonest means. (Coffman) B. Coffman also wrote that this phrase refers to any inordinate love of material possessions. C. 1 Timothy 3:8, Likewise must the deacons be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre; D. 1 Timothy 3:3, Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous; IX. not given to drunkenness, A. 1 Timothy 3:3, Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous; Titus 1:8, But a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men, sober, just, holy, temperate; I. but given to hospitality, must be hospitable,

19 II. a lover of good, one who loves what is good, upright, A. Moss noted that upright indicates one who fulfills his duty to others and to God. III. sober-minded, self-controlled, A. 1 Timothy 3:2, A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach; B. Titus 2:2, That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience. IV. just, upright V. holy, VI. self-controlled; disciplined, A. Galatians 5:23, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. Titus 1:9, Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers. I. Holding to the faithful word, trustworthy message which is according to the teaching, A. 1 Timothy 3:2, A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach; B. 1 Timothy 3:9, Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience. II. that he may be able both to:

20 A. exhort, encourage the sound (healthy) doctrine, Timothy 4:1, Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; 2. 1 Timothy 5:1, Rebuke not an elder, but intreat him as a father; and the younger men as brethren; 3. 1 Timothy 6:2, And they that have believing masters, let them not despise them, because they are brethren; but rather do them service, because they are faithful and beloved, partakers of the benefit. These things teach and exhort. B. and to convict the gainsayers. 1. Gainsayers are those who teach for personal gain, who will preach any doctrine depending on which pays the most. 2. Elders, bishops must have the ability to convict the gainsayers of their wickedness and protect the faithful from false doctrine Timothy 1:10, For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine; 4. 1 Timothy 5:20, Them that sin rebuke before all, that others also may fear Timothy 3:16, All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

Timothy 4:2, Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long suffering and doctrine. Elder s Responsible Toward False Teachers Titus 1:10, For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision: I. For there are many II. unruly, rebellious, insubordinate, disobedient, men, people, A. These were evidently Judaistic teachers in the church who tried to bind the forms and ceremonies of the Law of Moses on Christians. (Coffman) 1. Acts 15:5, But there rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees which believed, saying, That it was needful to circumcise them, and to command them to keep the law of Moses. III. vain talkers, mere talkers, meaningless talk, A. 1 Timothy 1:6, From which some having swerved, have turned aside unto vain jangling; IV. and deceivers, A. The vain talkers deceived and misled believers. B. Scriptures: 1. 1 Timothy 4:2, Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;

Timothy 3:13, For they that have used the office of a deacon well purchase to themselves a good degree, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus. V. specially they of the circumcision group A. Most of these unruly men were Jews, those who had received circumcision as stipulated in the Law of Moses. B. 1 Timothy 1:3-11, As I besought thee to abide still at Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia, that thou mightest charge some that they teach no other doctrine, Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do. Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned: From which some having swerved have turned aside unto vain jangling; Desiring to be teachers of the law; understanding neither what they say, nor whereof they affirm. But we know that the law is good, if a man use it lawfully; Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine; According to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust. Titus 1:11, Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre's sake. I. They must be silenced, whose mouths must be stopped; A. Elders, bishops are to be sure that what is preached and taught is the truth.

23 B. They are not to allow false doctrine to be preached to the destruction of the souls entrusted to their care. C. How are we to silence false teachers? D. Moss wrote that false teachers are to be muzzled as an animal. II. Men who overthrow whole houses, they are ruining whole households, A. Elders are to stay the mouths of false teachers whether the teaching is public or door to door. B. Scriptures 1. 1 Timothy 3:5, 15, (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?) But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth Timothy 3:6-9, For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts, Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith. But they shall proceed no further: for their folly shall be manifest unto all men, as their's also was. C. Fee via Moss wrote, the language does not suggerst the dividing of families, but rather that the church is facing the defection of certain whole families. III. teaching things which they ought not,

24 A. Any teaching other than that which is the gospel truth ought not to be taught Timothy 1;6, 7, From which some having swerved have turned aside unto vain jangling; Desiring to be teachers of the law; understanding neither what they say, nor whereof they affirm Timothy 6:3, 4, If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness; He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings, IV. for filthy lure s sake. A. These false teachers were motivated by greed, mercemaries, not devout, dedicated servants of God. B. Scriptures: 1. 1 Timothy 6:5-10, Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself. But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and raiment let us be therewith content. But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows Timothy 3:3, Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous;

25 3. Titus 1:7, For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; not selfwilled, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy lucre; Titus 1:12, One of themselves, even a prophet of their own, said, the Cretians are alway liars, evil beasts, slow bellies. I. One of themselves, a prophet of their own said, A. Paul was well educated and knew of this Cretan prophet who had been identified as Epimenides (Coffman) who lived circa B.C B. Epimenides was a Cretan prophet, not God s prophet. C. Dummelow via Coffman believed Paul called Epimenides a prophet because what he said remained true 700 years after he made this statement. D. Moss stated that Paul was simply saying that he knew the Cretans recognized Epimenides as a prophet. II. Cretans are always: III. liars, A. The reputation of the Cretans was well known. A. In ancient times, Coffman observed, Cretism was a synonym for lie and the verb cretize meant to tell lies. IV. evil beasts, brutes, A. Coffman wrote that these words refer to the sensuality which characterized the Cretans. B. They were devoid of righteousness willing to do anything to get ahead. (Moss)

26 V. idle, lazy gluttons, greedy hedonists. (Moss) Titus 1:13, This witness is true. Wherefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith; I. This testimony is true. A. Paul testified from first hand knowledge that the statement of Epimenides remained true in the first century. II. For which cause (Titus) reprove, rebuke them sharply A. Those Cretans who so conducted themselves were to be sharply reproved. III. that they may be sound in the faith, A. The point of Paul s command to Titus was to lead Christian Cretans to behave and teach in keeping with the gospel. B. 1 Timothy 1:10, For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine; Titus 1:14, Not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the truth. I. Not giving heed to Jewish fables, myths, A. The false teachers had a definite Jewish connection. B. This militant Judaism would have destroyed Christianity had it not been forcefully and successfully resisted. C. This militant opposition to Christianity continued until Jersusalem was destroyed in 70 A.D.

27 D. Scriptures: 1. 1 Timothy 1:4, Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do Timothy 4:7, But refuse profane and old wives' fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness. II. and commandments of men who reject the truth. A. In religion Christians are to give no credence to commandments of men. 1. Matthew 15:9, But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. 2. Colossians 2:21, 22, (Touch not; taste not; handle not; Which all are to perish with the using;) after the commandments and doctrines of men? B. Scriptures: 1. Mark 7:7, Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. 2. Matthew 15:9, But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. 3. Colossians 2:22, Which all are to perish with the using;) after the commandments and doctrines of men? III. who turn away from the truth. Titus 1:15, Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled.

28 I. To the pure all things are pure: A. Christians who understood that things such things as water pots that had not been ceremonially washed were still pure, clean. B. Of course, Paul was not teaching that Christians could regard sins as pure. C. 1 Timothy 4:4, 5, For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving: For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer. D. This refers to ceremonial laws regarding ceremonial cleanness and uncleanness. 1. Romans 14:20, For meat destroy not the work of God. All things indeed are pure; but it is evil for that man who eateth with offence. 2. Luke 11:38, And when the Pharisee saw it, he marvelled that he had not first washed before dinner. And the Lord said unto him, Now do ye Pharisees make clean the outside of the cup and the platter; but your inward part is full of ravening and wickedness. Ye fools, did not he that made that which is without make that which is within also? But rather give alms of such things as ye have; and, behold, all things are clean unto you Timothy 4:4, For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving: II. but to them that are defiled, corrupted and unbelieving, do not believe nothing is pure; Titus 1:16, They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.

29 I. They claim that they know God; A. Coffman wrote that this is a reference to Jewish claims to religious privilege. B. Paul here is speaking of those who claimed to be Christians but who claimed a higher, more esoteric knowledge of God. (Moss) II. but by their actions, works they deny him, A. Luke 6:46, And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? B. Their claims conflicted with their actions. This belied their claims. III. being abominable, detestable,.. IV. and disobedient, V. and unto every good work reprobate, apostate, unfit for doing anything good. A. Reprobate indicates a test (in this case good works) which was administered and failed.
