It s an uncomfortable feeling to catch people murmuring about what you did, said, or didn t do. It breeds division and exclusion. In today s Gospel, Jesus invites us to just the opposite. The reading opens with the crowds murmuring their doubts about Jesus after he has proclaimed himself the Bread of Life. Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph? How can he say I have come down from heaven? In his response, Jesus brings up the Israelites and the manna God brought them in the desert. If you turn back to the story in Exodus, you ll see another similar word: murmuring. As the going got tough, the Israelites doubted Moses and God s plan to protect and care for them as a chosen people. Here, Jesus proposes a difficult theological concept. Jesus himself is the living bread and flesh for the life of the world. This is not an exclusive concept. Everyone who listens to my Father and learns from him comes to me. Why? Because the Father who sent me draw [s] him. The next time you re at Mass, take a few moments to watch the communion line. Young and old, families and singles, diverse races and cultures and stories? We are all drawn to the Eucharistic table. Catholic doctrine may require faith, but it is a faith possible for anyone who seeks truth. Christianity does not hide behind locked doors in an exclusive clubhouse, whispering behind the backs of nonbelievers. Jesus compels us to share the love of God the Father for his children, that we one day be joined with Him and live forever.

Page 3 19th Sunday of the Year The Lord strengthens us for the journey of faith ahead of us. Elijah is fraught with many difficulties. Here he is afraid and flees for his life. Beset with so many problems, he prays for death but the Angel sent from God tells him to get up and eat or else the journey will be long for him. And what a journey it is - he will not only hear God s voice but his presence will pass by him too. Strengthened by the Word spoken to him and the food granted him, he will fulfill his prophetic mission for the Lord. It is not surprising that Christians follow the same path as Elijah. We stand up for the orphan, the widow and the stranger. We oppose racism and prejudice and we come to proclaim that all of life is so sacred that even capital punishment is sinful. In responding to each of them in our day and age, we can be the prophetic voice of God or we can be like everyone else. Unfortunately, so many take on the voice of everyone else because it is easier forgetting that what is put in place today will have a lasting impact on generations to come. Or we can carry on the prophetic tradition of the Word of God which stands for truth and justice, peace and mercy. This prophetic voice is heard in our Eucharistic prayers which remind us of who we are and what we need to do: Open our eyes to the needs of our brothers and sisters; inspire in us words and actions to comfort those who labor and are burdened. Make us serve them truly, after the example of Christ and at his command. And may your Church stand as a living witness to truth and freedom, to peace and justice that all people may be raised up to a new hope. (Euch. Prayer for various Needs IV). This same prophetic voice is heard in the Eucharistic prayer for Various Needs III: Every time we remember who we are and what we are called to do, we turn to the Lord for help and assistance. And the Lord richly grants us our request. For as Elijah was given food to strengthen him on the journey or else it would be too long, so too, we are given the Bread of Life to strengthen us to bring Christ to the world. Without Christ, the journey is long and difficult, fraught with problems and controversies. As Catholics, we are blessed to have the Holy Eucharist which is God s gift to us. The journey is just too difficult and it is easy to get off track and forget what we are about when we stay away from the Eucharist. Thankfully, food for the journey of grace and hope is here for us. God reminds us of who we are, what we are about and how we bring Christ to others. Father Ron

Page 4 CSA Minute: Sacred Heart Major Seminary Institute for Ministry Many students are registering for classes at Sacred Heart Major Seminary this month, thanks to Parish Empowerment Fund scholarships funded by gifts to the Catholic Services Appeal. Our major seminary not only prepares men for ordination to the priesthood and the permanent diaconate, it offers degree and certificate programs for lay women and men seeking to be new evangelists for the new millennium at the Institute for Ministry. Through discernment and theological reflection, the institute guides and challenges commuter students to deepen their commitment to spiritual growth, attend to their call, and identify their gifts for service in the Church. For more information about Sacred Heart Major Seminary or the Institute for Ministry, please go to For more information about this and other CSA-funded ministries, programs, and services, please go to ST. CHRISTINE FOOD PANTRY 2018 DONATION PROGRAM RESULTS During the month of July your Knights of Columbus Council at Prince of Peace conducted its annual donation program for the Food Pantry at St. Christine parish, located in inner city Detroit. This year you contributed 660 pounds of food and $4,758 in cash, including $500 from your K of C Council. Additionally, your K of C Council members provided all the volunteer work for the collection, packaging and delivery of the food items to the Pantry. Food donations were close to last year while cash donations were a record since we have been collecting for St. Christine s. Some POP parishioners are past residents of the Detroit area near St. Christine and can have empathy for some of the poverty conditions seen there today. With school lunches not available in the summer months, the Pantry s twice weekly ration is the only food affordable for many of these families and children. These dire circumstances we see so close to us will not disappear with our one month of effort. However, this successful annual Knights of Columbus donation program along with other donation programs is truly a demonstration of the Charity of the Prince of Peace parishioners and their compassion for the many families and children like those in the St. Christine Pantry area. May God continue to bless our efforts. Seek Jesus Before Material Things, Pope Francis Says It is not wrong to be concerned with the daily necessities of life, but strengthening one s relationship with Jesus is of far greater importance, Pope Francis said in his Sunday Angelus address. The Lord invites us not to forget that if we need to worry about material bread, it is even more important to cultivate our relationship with him, to strengthen our faith in him, who is the bread of life, come to satisfy or hunger for truth, our hunger for justice, our hunger for love, the pope said August 5, He reflected on the day s Gospel passage, in which a crowd of people are searching for Jesus and his disciples after the multiplication of the loaves and fishes. When they find him, Jesus says to the crowd: You are looking for me not because you saw signs but because you ate the loaves and were filled. In giving this answer, Jesus shows that it is not enough that people search for him, he wants people to know him, Francis said. Jesus wants the encounter with him to go beyond the immediate satisfaction of material needs. This is because Jesus came to bring us something more than the daily preoccupations of feeding and clothing ourselves, our careers, and so on, he said. In fact, he added, the multiplication of the loaves and of the fish is a sign of the great gift that the Father has given to humanity and that is Jesus himself! Begin the true Bread of Life, Jesus wants to satisfy not just bodies, but souls, giving the spiritual food that can satisfy the deepest hunger, he continued. So, he invites the crowd of people to search not for material food, but for the food that lasts: his Word, his Body, and his Blood. In the Gospels, the crowd then asks Jesus what it is they must do to carry out the work of God, and Jesus answers them: This is the work of God, that you believe in the one he sent. It is a Catholic s faith in Jesus which allows us to do the works of God, he continued. If we allow ourselves to be involved in this relationship of love and trust with Jesus, we will be able to do good works that smell of the Gospel, for the good and the needs of [our] brothers. After praying the Angelus, the pope noted that Monday, August 6, marks the 40th anniversary of the death of Blessed Pope Paul VI, who will be canonized in Rome October 14. We remember him with much veneration and gratitude From heaven may he intercede for the Church and for peace in the world, he said. Adding that the soon-to-be saint was a great pope of modernity, he encouraged those gathered to applaud in gratitude. Hannah Brockhaus, Catholic News Agency

Page 6 Taste and See Commentary, by Mary McGlone, Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet Search your prayer books, meditate on all 20 mysteries of the rosary and comb through novenas and chaplets. Nowhere will you find the suggestion that you pray like Elijah does in today s first reading. He was basically telling God, Enough! I ve had it! Just let me lie down and die! Here and now! The fact that spiritual tomes don t copy that prayer for us to memorize or create hymns from it doesn t diminish the crystal quality of its honesty or the witness it bears to the profound relationship Elijah maintained with the God who had called him into a life of prophecy. When we find the Thy will be done, of the Lord s Prayer too hard to pray, perhaps we can echo Elijah s cry and trust that God hears that prayer with compassion. After praying, Elijah lay down, perhaps hoping never to awaken. But God s lovers don t get off so easily. Elijah had hardly gotten into deep sleep before God s messenger shook him awake and told him to eat. When Elijah tried to return to the sleep of the just, the angel told him to finish off the provisions God had sent because he needed energy for the road ahead. That long road would first take Elijah to Mount Horeb where God would appear to him. Later, it led him to where he would anoint Elisha as his successor and finally to where he would be carried off to heaven in a chariot of fire (2 Kings 2:11). According to the story, the one thing God did not do for Elijah was allow him to die. Elijah s story seems to teach that God listens to the prayers of the beloved and answers by beckoning them toward all that life can offer. This is the message Jesus tried to convey to his companions as he described himself as the bread that comes from heaven. According to Jesus, the bread from heaven was God s offer of life more abundant than they could imagine. The people who murmured, denigrating him as nothing more than the son of their neighbors, were prisoners of their own measly expectations. They wouldn t fathom the idea that God could work through one of them - much less that their small lives could ever be worth stretching into eternity. Their refusal to accept Jesus as coming from God betrayed their lack of faith in the value and potential of their own lives and consequently their lack of faith in the God who formed them as a people in the divine image. Jesus told his people that no one could come to him unless drawn by the Father. He wanted them to realize that the only way to understand him was to allow themselves to be in touch with their deepest human longings, the dimension of themselves which yearns for and leads to God. St. Augustine prayed in gratitude for this capacity to be open to God with the words, You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in you. Jesus call to those who would hear him was the most open invitation he could make. In effect he was saying, Allow yourselves to be in touch with God s spirit within you and you will realize that I am offering you living bread, my very life which brings eternal life to the world. The Scriptures we hear this week try to awaken us to what God is offering us. Elijah is here to lead us in the kind of sincere prayer that makes us vulnerable to God s unlimited offers. The memory of the people who murmured against Jesus in the synagogue warns us against mortally diminished hopes and venial expectations. Together they urge us to allow our hearts longing for God to lead us to receive the life God desires to share with us. Celebration Publications, August 2018

Page 8 Question: Why Do We Do That? Catholic Traditions Explained Why can t everyone who wants to receive Communion, receive Communion at Mass? Answer: Outside of the Church, many organizations have all sorts of requirements for membership: dues, achievements, professional standings, etc. The requirements bring the group together in common purposes and goals. Within the Church, there are also basic requirements for receiving the sacraments. As Catholics, we believe that the Eucharist is the true Bread of Life. It is the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus Christ. When we receive the Eucharist, we are receiving Jesus. Out of reverence for Christ, only those in union with this teaching and in a state of grace should receive communion. As Catholics, we should abstain from communion if we are in mortal sin. While we share many articles of faith with our Protestant brothers and sisters, their understanding of this teaching is fundamentally different. For most non-catholic churches, they do not believe that Christ becomes truly present in the Eucharist. As such, they should not receive communion in a Catholic Church. These differences are greater for people of non-christian faiths, and even more apparent for those who do not believe in God. Receiving communion is not a right, but a gift to be accepted in humble, trusting faith. RCIA All Are Welcome Here An age-appropriate Liturgy of the Word is offered for children ages 4 through 2nd grade. Children s Liturgy of the Word is offered the First and Third Sunday s of the month during the 10:00 a.m. Mass. No pre-registration is necessary. All children are welcome and encouraged to attend. Children are invited to celebrate the Liturgy of the Word in a way specifically designed for their age group. They listen to the same Scripture readings as the rest of the assembly, and are taught a simplified main message of the readings and are encouraged to share that message with their parents after Mass. For additional information or to get involved, please contact Linda Plotkowski, Worship Coordinator by worship@princeofpeacecatholic.church or by phone at Are you interested in learning more about the Catholic faith?
