1 A Word From Pastor Caroline November 2018 As the Body of Christ we are called and sent to love and serve the world It Matters! You ve probably heard the following story. While I usually steer clear of anything that could be considered trite, this story still speaks to me. One day a man was walking along the beach when he noticed a boy picking something up and gently throwing it into the ocean. Approaching the boy, he asked, What are you doing? The youth replied, Throwing starfish back into the ocean. The surf is up and the tide is going out. If I don t throw them back, they ll die. Son, the man said, don t you realize there are miles and miles of beach and hundreds of starfish? You can t make a difference! After listening politely, the boy bent down, picked up another starfish, and threw it back into the surf. Then, smiling at the man, he said, I made a difference for that one. Have you ever had one of those days when you wonder, Does what I do really matter? Every once in a while when our country s political wheels seem to be spinning out of control, or I feel overwhelmed by the great needs of the world, or an acolyte is dozing in the front pew I begin to wonder if what I do every day matters. Does cynicism ever creep into your life, too? On the flip side of the same record (if you don t understand that metaphor, ask a grandparent), we Lutheran Christians have such a strong emphasis on God s grace that we can lose sight of the ancient proverb St. Paul quotes to the Galatians, for we reap whatever we sow. In other words, what we do matters. When we are talking about life together in the church (as St. Paul was) or how fully we embrace our call to love and serve the world, what we do really does matter; at least, it matters to someone. During the month of November you will see folks in the pew next to you on the big screen well, the big screen in the sanctuary. They will be sharing their story of living generously and will be encouraging everyone to believe what they do what you do really does matter. Sometimes more than you know. As you hear these stories, please consider how you might continue CtK s legacy of loving and serving the world in Maybe this is a good time to join a ministry-oriented committee, serve a meal at Dismas House, sing in the choir, volunteer at the non-profit of your choice, or lend a listening ear to a neighbor. Maybe it s simply time to continue what you re already doing caring for yourself and for those around you. Or maybe it s time to carefully, prayerfully consider your financial pledge to support the ministries of Christ the King. With the INTO salary subsidies ending in 2019 and with hiring two part-time people to work with children, youth and adult faith formation (we had 69 youth and parents at the Youth Orientation in September!) your generosity in 2019 will definitely make a difference. Whatever you choose, please know this: it does matter. Then, smiling at the man, he said, I made a difference for that one. Thank you for the seeds of faith, hope, and generosity you continue to sow! 2 2 The King s Herald Christ the King Lutheran Church Walk To The Altar Sunday, December 2 Rather than simply mail pledge cards to the office, this year you may bring them to the altar; worship on Sunday, December 2, will include a Walk to the Altar for all who wish to participate. What you pledge is between you and God and CtK s Financial Secretary; however, join your CtK family in physically offering it to God either on the altar (for those who wish to navigate stairs) or near the altar (but on the main level). Those not in worship on December 2 may still use mail, , or the Financial Secretary s mailbox near the front office. Thank you for your generosity! CMG Prayer Walk Results! Hello fellow CMG partners! We had a very interesting Prayer Walk event on October 20th. The Prayer Walk was scheduled for October 6th but was postponed due to bad weather. The weather on the 20th wasn t much better but we trudged ahead anyway through strong winds, rain, sleet, snow and a Garth Brooks concert traffic jam around the ND campus. So, the Prayer Walk turned into a Prayer Drive with 5 youth and 6 adults. We split up into four teams. One of the teams went to neighborhoods north and south of CtK. Another went to Madison School and Leeper Park, downtown South Bend and along Cleveland Road from SR 933 back to CtK. Another team went to Penn High School, other schools, outdoor playgrounds and farmland on the way back to CtK. The last team went to downtown South Bend, to an area on the east side of St Joseph River along a stretch of road where there are multiple buildings housing mental health services, some of which are empty, and looked for areas where homeless people set up camp outdoors around Lincolnway and Miami. Each team went out with the intention of observing what God is doing in our community with prayers for blessing, help and thanks. Afterwards, the teams returned to CtK for a meal, fellowship and discussion of what was seen, felt and heard.

3 The King s Herald Christ the King Lutheran Church 3 CMG Prayer Walk/Drive (continued) Following are some of the observations and prayers: Prayed for things that make us joyful. Asking God to help diminish evil in the world. Thankful for schools, teachers, support staff and administrators educating students. No bullying. Prayers for middle school girls dealing with many difficult issues and boys to be respectful of girls and each other. Careful stewardship of farmland, wise use of the soil and using the produce to feed people. Weather damage and prayers that people are unharmed. There many different types of neighborhoods; each with their own types of needs. Prayed for safety, wellness, good health and happiness in homes. Homes may look well-kept and expensive but we don t know what is going on inside. There may be depression, sadness, addiction and abuse. God, please help us all. Most people try to do their best to be kind and caring. God whispered that there is hope for people in our neighborhoods that they can find contentment and happiness in life. Some schools have low ISTEP scores. Dear God, please help us help those schools, students and teachers to raise scores. Prayers for difficult family situations for children. Blessed with many churches and organizations that work every day to assist people in our community in need. Prayed for people that volunteer, donate and give of their time. Thankful for beautiful churches in our community. We need to spend more time looking and listening for what God is doing in our community. Beautiful outdoor spaces where people can commune with nature and God. Nice to be outside and worship God. Should CtK put something up on one of the big electronic billboards in our community? Prayed for patience for people stuck in Garth Brooks concert traffic jam. Sad to see beautiful buildings designed to provide behavioral health services but empty. Who owns them? Can we do something to help? Prayed for mental health workers and patients dealing with difficult issues and situations. Young people in need of mental health services. Looked for homeless encampments but did not see them. We know they have been present. Where have the homeless gone? No signs but there are issues. What can we learn from all this to add to our collection of CMG information in search for our role in our community? We will see. The CMG Stirring Team, with help from CtK members, are planning more ways to meet with community members, leaders and organizations to gain additional insights on needs in our community and expand our broad community listening. Soon, we will be discerning what God is planning for us to participate in to help people in our community. As always, there is more overall information posted at the CMG display in the narthex. If you can t make it on Fridays but would like to contribute to the effort, please feel free to bring completed prayer shawls and hats to the church. ANGEL TREE A GIFT TO THE COMMUNITY Look for the Angel Tree in November. This year s tree will involve ten local organizations, requesting 25 gifts each. Tags will be available beginning Sunday, November 4. All wrapped gifts must be returned to the church by Sunday, December 2. New this year, if you want to contribute to the Angel Tree, but are not interested or able to shop, you can place a donation in the offering plate, with Angel Tree written in the memo line of your check. SOCIAL MINISTRY COMMITTEE This fun & lively committee organizes & coordinates the many monthly mission activities at CtK. This month s focus will be on the Angel Tree. CARD MINISTRY Join the Card Ministry to have a wonderful time of fellowship as we create beautiful cards stitched on cardstock made for those in our congregation who are hurting. If you would like to make cards, but this time doesn t work, please call Freda Scheibelhut at (574) CAMP RAY BIRD CAMP CLEANUP Camp Ray Bird is a local bible camp whose mission is to share the gospel of Jesus Christ with Michiana children and teens who could not otherwise afford meaningful camping experiences. CtK high school students have the opportunity to be junior camp counselors for a week next summer. To help the camp prepare for winter, the camp is hosting a raking day and serving lunch when the grounds are clean. Bring a rake and join the youth to see this great local camp. SUNDAY MISSION SPEAKER: CLAY CHURCH FOOD BANK Ginny Jakoubek has volunteered at the Clay Food Pantry for a number of years. Clay has the largest food pantry in the South Bend area and is doing much more than just giving food to their guests. Join us in listening to the great work going on at Clay Food Pantry on Sunday, November 18. CENTER FOR HOMELESS SERVING OUR COMMUNITY Sign up on the narthex kiosk to serve dinner, cafeteria style, to residents at the Center for the Homeless. CtK members visit the Center on the fourth Saturday and Sunday of each month. This is a great service opportunity for a family to do together. Simply go to the Center for Homeless at 813 South Michigan Street and check in at the front desk. DISMAS HOUSE PREPARING DINNER & FELLOWSHIP This mission involves making dinner for residents at Dismas House who are working towards independent living after jail or prison. CtK members sign-up to prepare and take a meal and eat in fellowship with the residents. The meal is self-serve/buffet style & the residents do the clean up. Sign up on the narthex kiosk and/or contact Bill Montgomery for more details. Dismas House is located at 521 S. St. Joseph Street in South Bend.

5 The King s Herald Christ the King Lutheran Church 5 Spotlight on Missions CLAY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH FOOD PANTRY Jean Womer explains it all started on a snowy Wednesday night in Clay Church used to serve a Wednesday dinner. Sue Zumbrun and I received a call from a woman who was snowed in and had no food in her house. So, we packed her a dinner and as much food as we could, trekked through the snow and made a delivery. That night, they decided Clay needed a food pantry. When they started in 1995, they thought they were doing great things by feeding 6 families a week. Now, 23 years later, they average families a week. Clay Church is the largest food pantry in the South Bend area, and because of that, they receive a lot of food from the Food Bank of Northern Indiana (FBNI). In fact, one day in August, they received their largest shipment, 10,000 pounds of food! Although the pantry receives food from FBNI, they must supplement to provide all the family needs. They purchase paper products and toiletries from the Dollar Tree and the congregation donates food on a regular basis. Over the years, Clay has become more than just a food pantry. In July, Martha Randall-Erickson had a thought. She has a love for clothes and decided she wanted to start a clothes ministry. She explained, When the Lord has his hands on something, it just flows. I had the idea one Sunday morning, so I talked to Jean and Pastor Brian that day and they both said, Sure, start it. So, the third week of July, I set up my clothes, organizing them by color and invited the customers to take whatever they want. She went on to say God put in my heart, DO NOT LIMIT, so they can take as much as they like. Now, when people come to the food pantry, they choose to make their first stop the clothes pantry, and leave excited with their new items. The program has grown in other ways as well. They now have a café, where customers are encouraged to sit down and enjoy a cup of coffee, a sandwich and fruit. According to Jean, this is the time the real ministry occurs. She has volunteers whose main purpose is to sit at the tables, converse with the customers, listen to their stories and pray with them. One day in August, a man sat down, ate a sandwich and asked for a second. He explained he hadn t had a thing to eat all week. Another family had 2 small children, who ate 3 sandwiches a piece, along with fruit, because they were so hungry. The volunteers were there to provide them food, fellowship and emotional support. Clay Food Pantry is open every Monday from 12-3 and Thursday from They are in need of volunteers to: 1) help serve customers one-on-one as they receive their food from the panty, 2) assist in the set-up and distribution of the clothes, and 3) sit with the customers in the café to listen to their stories. Please join us in welcoming Pastor Steve and Kathy at a reception in the narthex starting at 10:30. Sign-up on the kiosk to bring fruit or coffee cake for the reception. Take a selfie with the cutouts of our 3 senior pastors and send it to the CtK office or website for fun! Copies of the DVD created by JoAnne Westerhausen showing photos of the 50 year history of CtK are free and available through the church office. Have you ever wondered who was on council and what their job entailed? Now s your chance to find out! Council members will be available on Sunday, November 4 th and November 11 th for a Meet and Greet between services. This will be an opportunity to ask questions and find out what they really do. Who knows! You may want to be a part of this exciting and fun part of CtK. Friday, November 16 from 5:30 to 8:30 pm All 6th through 12th graders are welcome to join us for a Friday night of fun, as we work together using codes and clues to try to escape a room or several rooms at church! You can't experience this unique Escape Room anywhere else but here at CtK, so don't miss out! This event is free and includes dinner. First Communion Milestone Class Wed, Nov pm in VOH For anyone who missed the spring First Communion class, the pastors are offering another opportunity for your child/children to complete this important class to learn about what communion means, to bake bread together and to be prepared to begin taking communion in worship. Please note: a parent needs to attend class with their child. 7 The King s Herald Christ the King Lutheran Church 7 TRUNK-OR-TREAT THANK YOU A huge thank you goes out to all who participated in this year's Trunk-or-Treat event! We had nearly 30 decorated trunks passing out candy to the kids, as well as numerous volunteers helping in the kitchen, serving food, directing traffic and parking and making our guests feel welcome. We also had great help from the youth, with 28 of our CtK youth as well as the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts assisting for the evening. Thank you also to everyone who donated candy for the event, and to this year's corporate sponsors: Thrivent, Meijer, Martin's, Walmart, Cosco, and Gordon's, who together donated a total of $600 to cover our free meal. What a great evening of outreach to our community and fellowship with each other! Thank you everyone!

8 8 The King s Herald Christ the King Lutheran Church Oct 21 - Jamaica Mission Sunbeam Electrical Project Oct 21 - Reception PASSAGES Marriage: We rejoice in the marriage of Kelsey Johnson & Cory Praklet who were united in marriage on September 15 in Middlebury with Pastor Steve Schwier officiating. Kelsey is the daughter of Annette & Kevin Johnson. Death: Please pray for the family of Peggy (Bob) Sudrovech as they mourn the passing of Zara Lee Castle, Peggy s aunt, who died in Marshall, Missouri on October 2, at the age of 84. New Members Marcus & Christine Felde were welcomed as new CtK members on October 21. Marcus recently retired as pastor of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Indianapolis and they moved here to be close to their grandchildren, Lucy & Kate Felde. They were missionaries in Papua New Guinea for 14 of Marcus 43 years of ministry. Marcus has a Ph.D. in theology from the University of Chicago and Christine is a teacher who has taught from preschool through post-secondary levels. She has also been a YMCA aquatics director and seamstress, sewing (among other things) Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton s red vestments. Marcus enjoys genealogy, Christine enjoys sewing and knitting, they both love to travel, watch movies, and spend time with grandchildren. They have four children and ten grandchildren. Hillary Doerries was welcomed as a new member at CtK on September 30. She has lived in South Bend for 5 years and before that she lived in Olney, IL and Bloomington, IN. She started attending CtK due to her position as CtK s Director of Music Ministries but she is now drawn to CtK s welcoming community and commitment to serve. Hillary is a seminary student at Perkins School of Theology at SMU working towards her Doctor of Pastoral Music, (DPM). She is interested in mental health advocacy, being outside, writing and spending time with her family.

9 The King s Herald Christ the King Lutheran Church 9 GOD S MESSENGERS My sister Dinah was hospitalized for four days in late September. Thankfully, we were already planning to spend a week with her and her husband Rick. It ended up being two weeks, because she needed more support before being on her own during the day when Rick was at work. The first day we visited her was on a Sunday; we hiked up a very steep hill, which is commonplace in North Carolina. When we were about twenty feet from the door, I happened to look up. I saw a woman who was pushing a large laundry cart. She hollered out to me with the most beautiful smile on her glowing face: Hi, beautiful! And, I immediately hollered back to her: Hi, Cutie Pie! The love and the glow of the Holy Spirit emanated from her face outward. We wished each other blessed days. A couple days later, a nurse entered Dinie s room, leaving the door open. Looking out into the hallway, I spotted the woman who had hollered out to me earlier in the week. I said to her: I know you. She repeated what she had said to me previously: Hi, beautiful. And I called out to her: Hi, Cutie Pie. She was pushing her laundry cart and picking up dirty linens. I invited her into Dinie s room and introduced them to each other. She told my sister: I have a song for you. And with her beautiful voice, she sang: What God has for you, it is for you. What God has for you, it is for you I know without a doubt that He will bring you out What God has for you, it is for you. She and Dinah hugged; Dinie was so very thankful for the blessing God sent through this child of God. I went to this lady and told her what my prayer to God for Dinah was. I asked God to send his messengers to minister to her. We hugged, and her kiss on my cheek made me feel blessed. I pray my kiss on her cheek made her feel just as blessed. She told us that she spent her days doing everything she could to please God. Surely, He smiled on her that day, and no doubt, so many more days. Another day, a woman entered Dinie s room to clean it and to mop the floors. She signed in on the dry erase board, her name and the words, with prayer. When we talked with her, she explained that she prays for every patient whose room she cleans on every floor of the hospital. She was a Mennonite woman with fourteen children (two who died at very young ages and one who was stillborn.) Her husband was a pastor. She was transported, along with other women, to work at the hospital three days a week. The other days of the week she worked at a camp that could be rented by various groups. It offered many activities and people could stay for the day or longer. She needed to work two jobs to help support their large family. She was thankful there was a large age span among their children, so the older ones could tend to the younger. As we talked with her, she never stopped working, and she continued to share her faith with us. Wherever we are in life, whatever we are experiencing, whenever trials and obstacles appear, know this: our Heavenly Father will never leave us or forsake us. (Hebrews 13:5) We need to look around us. Who is God sending our way to stand beside us in prayer, to bring us encouragement, increase our faith, and love us through it? We need to open our eyes with expectation, and we will begin to see His messengers wherever we go. IN AND THROUGH HIM, DIANE HUWALDT

Children's Christmas Party: 10 am to 1 pm including lunch - We will be enjoying crafts, music, games, cookie decorating and a special Christmas message for children in preschool through 5th grade. Youth Christmas Party: 1 pm - 3 pm 6th through 12th graders, come early if you can and help with the Children's party, then stay for our own Youth Crew Christmas fun from 1-3 pm!
