2 relatives and member of our Church family on this feast day. 2 As we celebrate Veterans Day, I'm wondering what should be the Christian attitude in resorting to violence to resolve conflicts? Veterans are rightly honored for their role in defending the country, especially in time of conflict and violence. Yet, resorting to violence as a means of trying to resolve human conflicts is not the Christian way to deal with relationships. Jesus models the image of God in which all are valued and cherished as God's children, no matter who they are or which side they are on. In times of war and military struggles, it is difficult to make these kinds of distinctions. Yet distinctions have to be made, and values have to be examined in determining what justice demands. Sometimes violence may be justified, but only as a means of last resort, when all possible options have been exhausted, and when greater harm might result. Those who fight and defend under such circumstances must be supported, cared for, valued, and honored. At the same time, institutions who declare that violence is the only means left to resolve a conflict have to examine continuously their motives and agendas. Those who push institutions to such deep self-examination should be as valued as those who are defending the institution. Both play important and necessary roles, and as such both are truly patriotic. Such tensions prevent blind nationalistic slogans like "our country, right or wrong" from seeing the light of day. Let us pray for all veterans, as well as for those who seek to negotiate peace, that God may truly guide us all in the path of justice. Adults - $12 while children ages four to eleven are $7.50. Book of Remembrance Beginning on All Souls Day a Book of Remembrance will be set out at both St. James and St. John's. You are invited to enter into the Book of Remembrance the names of loved ones who have entered eternal life. They do not have to be Catholic or even a members of the parish. The Book will continue to be out through the month of November. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament Every Wednesday from 6-7 PM followed by Mass at 7 PM. Come and spend some time with Our Lord in prayer! St. James the Less, St. Paul St. John the Baptist, Houghton 2018/19 Annual Diocesan Appeal Thank you to all who have already responded so generously to this years' Annual Diocesan Appeal. Each year the success of the campaign depends on you. Once more this year, you have done a wonderful thing; your pledges and gifts have helped to assure that the ADA will be able to continue building the faith community throughout the Diocese of Davenport. 2018/19 ADA Goal Pledges Over (Under) Pledge Received Goal % Goal St. John the Baptist $9,942 $2,974 ($6,968) 29.91% St. James the Less $11,153 $3,410 ($7,743) 30.57% We did a goo job last year on our ADA goal. St. John s reached 90% of there goal of $10,568. Leaving the parish to pay the remaining $1,038. St. James, did a little better than the previous year, reaching 75% of their goal of $10,667. Leaving the parish to pay $2,569 balance. My dream is to have BOTH parishes meet their goals for this year. However the realist in me recognizes that this probably won t happen unless MORE parishioners are willing to give. Last year 70 out of 175 St. John parish families, and 57 out of 163 St. James parish families gave to the ADA. It would be nice to see MORE participation this year. For those of you, who have not yet made your pledge to this year s Diocesan Annual Appeal, please complete the information needed on the envelope for the Diocese that was sent to you to. Additional envelopes are available in the back of Church. Electronic giving and credit card donations can also be entered on the diocesan website via a secure site. Anointing Mass An Anointing Mass will be held Tuesday, November 20th at 9:00 a.m. at St. James the Less in St. Paul. All in need of healing, or 60 years of age or older, are encouraged to attend. Like all the sacraments, the Holy anointing was instituted by Jesus Christ during his earthly ministry. The Catechism explains, This sacred anointing of the sick was instituted by Christ our Lord as a true and proper sacrament of the New Testament. It is alluded to indeed by Mark, but is recommended to the faithful and promulgated by James the apostle and brother of the Lord (Mark 6:13, Jas. 5:14-15). The anointing of the sick conveys several graces and imparts gifts of strengthening in the Holy Spirit against anxiety, discouragement, and temptation and conveys peace and fortitude (CCC 1520). These graces flow from the atoning death of Jesus Christ, for this was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah, He took our infirmities and bore our diseases (Matt. 8:17) Vision 20/20 Listening Session Tuesday, November 13th at 6:30p.m. the parishes of St. Mary's and St. Boniface along with St. James and St. John will host a listening session for the Diocesan Vision 20/20 in the Ossenbrink Center in West Point. The Diocesan Church is asking for assistance in identifying the present state of the church in the Diocese of Davenport related to evangelization and outreach as presented by Pope Francis in The Joy of the Gospel. Please join us so that you may participate in the Diocese assessment of the church and its goal of missionary discipleship. 3 Thirty Second Week of Ordinary Time, November 11th, This Is The Question That Will Put You On The Right Foot With God What is the most I can do for You?": It might sometimes be uncomfortable, but it's always rewarding. By Fr. Dominic Bouck for Aleteia I have been teaching my high-school students about prayer. While I was ranting and raving about nothing in particular, it finally hit me; the question we should be asking God is What is the most I can do for You? Often when considering morality, we look at what we ought to do, and most often, what we ought not to do. When we pray, we can ask for assistance in this or that matter, we can intercede for this or that person, ask for this or that thing. Sometimes we ask for an increase of God s love for us; sometimes we even ask how we can serve him. For people in their late teens or early 20s, the subject of the choice of spouse or vocation can be a prevalent one. The summary of our prayer lives is to be an imitation of the Lord Jesus, his sinless but tortured humanity on full display, who asks to be preserved from the evils that he was to suffer. It is always legitimate to beg to be freed from trials, persecutions, fears, and anxiety. But ultimately, we must end our prayer like him: Not my will, but thy will be done. The will of God can be a scary thing. I think good Halloween-time reading is Abandonment to Divine Providence by de Cassuade. What if God s will was done in my life 100 percent? What beloved things in my life (think of Smeagol s precious ) would I have to give up in order to serve God totally and completely? These questions (which I ask) betray a lack of faith that God has only and completely my good in mind. The sooner I might be liberated from the illusion of control, the sooner that I experience the true freedom that God has in store for me. The process of understanding that I am not in control is merely a recognition of reality. We have the choice, however, of embracing that reality and facing head-on the adventure that God has planned for us. Asking God, What s the most I can do for you? is the quickest path to releasing ourselves from the false notions we have of what make us happy and free, and setting us on an exhilarating and selfless path of service to God and neighbor. Of course, the voice of God is not scary. He will only call us to things that will draw us nearer to himself, to authentic love of neighbor, and of true love of ourselves. His voice does not threaten, but invites; he speaks and we receive what he says because it generates feelings of peace, joy, and calm. The way we choose is often fraught with anxiety and a false and self-imposed sense of pressure. The way of God is that of freedom and peace. Asking God, What is the most I can do for you? is not for the faint of heart, for the small person. Full disclaimer: It will cause discomfort, purgation, and an increase of time spent in service. But while it is sometimes uncomfortable, it is always rewarding. While it will entail some nos, the yeses are much greater. And I promise, as I try to increase in its practice myself, the time spent in service will yield a freedom we have not yet tasted in acts of mere self-service. God, what is the most I can do for you? Brace yourself. You may end by being a saint.
