SOUTH GEORGIA ADVOCATE MARCH 17 EDITION District Superintendents share hopes and prayers for new districts Rev. Henry Bass, Dr. Buddy Cooper, Rev. Nita Crump, Dr. Rick Lanford, Dr. Wayne Moseley and Rev. Chris Ramsey have been appointed by Bishop King as District Superintendents for the conference year. We asked them their hopes, prayers and expectations as the Conference transitions from nine districts to six. Rev. Henry Bass South Central District ADVOCATE: What are your hopes and prayers for the new South Central District? REV. BASS: My hope for the new South Central District is that we build up the kingdom of God by growing healthy churches that reach out to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. My prayer is that we will be sincere and intentional in making disciples of Jesus Christ and that we practice that in a way that makes us better stewards of what we are trying to do together. We can do it if we do it together. ADVOCATE: Having previously served on a district, how do you see your role as a District Superintendent continuing/shifting/changing as the Conference moves forward into a new structure? REV. BASS: The role of the District Superintendent will be shifting. My focus will be on building relationships with clergy and laity to develop a team concept within the district. As we work with clusters in the new district model I will be more active and intentional about bringing leadership around the table to do our part in the connection. This new team will be dependent on each other and will work together to find solutions as we live into a new reality. I look forward to serving the South Central District and building new relationships and cultivating existing ones. Dr. Buddy Cooper Northwest District ADVOCATE: What are your hopes and prayers for the new Northwest District? 1

DR. COOPER: I want our ministers and churches to address the reasons we had to reduce the number of districts from nine to six. I hope we will regain our sense of urgency when considering the least, the last, and the lost. We are supposed to be the difference in the lives of those who need us to care. I hope the leadership from each new district will step up and enable us to be effective quickly after conference. We will be following Bishop King's dictum: go slow to go fast. I pray that we see, for the first time in my 40 years of service, our United Methodist Church begin to grow again in the United States. We have focused long enough on making peace within our denomination. It is time to shift our focus to making peace with our God, as revealed by our Lord Jesus Christ. ADVOCATE: Having previously served on a district, how do you see your role as a District Superintendent continuing/shifting/changing as the Conference moves forward into a new structure? DR. COOPER: I see the role of the DS as the spark plug that keeps the vision front and center and encourages each minister to bring their best to the ministry to which we are all called. The clustering of the districts will help me make the best use of my limited time. It will have to be more of a team effort than it was with smaller districts. The privilege to serve should never be confused with being special. Our God has been carving rotten wood and riding lame horses since he called Abraham. All He has to choose from are human beings. What then? We shall not fail, if we will only trust Him. The best is always yet to be. I am looking forward to this coming year. Rev. Nita Crump Southwest District ADVOCATE: What were your first thoughts when Bishop King asked you to join his cabinet? REV. CRUMP: When the Bishop called to ask me to join the Cabinet, my first thought was to question my abilities to serve in such a capacity. My second thought was of John 15:5: I am the vine and you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit. Apart from me you can do nothing. Apart from Christ, no one can adequately serve in any form of ministry. With the help of Christ, I will serve the pastors and churches of the Southwest District as we work to make disciples and grow the kingdom. ADVOCATE: Having served on the transition team and now playing a key role as a member of the cabinet, how do you envision your role as a District Superintendent under this new structure? REV. CRUMP: The most obvious impact to the work of a District Superintendent in our new configuration will be the increased number of churches and pastors in each district. The Bishop and Transition Team are working to develop a model that will use a combination of personal interaction and modern technology to encourage and strengthen our connection as Methodists across South Georgia. 2

All six District Superintendents will find ourselves in a new expression of our connection as we live into the six-district model. While the working model will be different, the role of the District Superintendent will remain much the same. We are called to represent the Bishop in the districts, to serve as the pastor to the pastors, to support and encourage the works of ministry in the local churches, and to attend to various administrative tasks. The coming months will be a challenge for all of us superintendents, pastors and churches alike. With God s guidance and a renewed commitment to serve Christ and the world through our connectional system, we can all rise to the challenge. It s an exciting time, filled with possibilities. I look forward to working with all the pastors and laity as we seek God s will and do his work in the new Southwest District. ADVOCATE: What are your hopes and prayers for the Southwest District? REV. CRUMP: My prayers for the Southwest District are numerous. I pray for God s guidance as we move into the six-district model. I pray for patience and gracious spirits on the part of all those in the district as, together, we learn what it means to be the Southwest District. But most of all I pray for opportunities opportunities to use this new model in new ways as we share the old, old story of the good news of Jesus Christ with those who need to hear it. Dr. Rick Lanford North Central District ADVOCATE: What were your first thoughts when Bishop King asked you to join his cabinet? DR. LANFORD: I love canoeing. Sometimes while traveling a new river, I notice a fork ahead. Initially, I am caught off guard, surprised, and a little anxious. But, it is nice when someone who knows the river is with you. They may say, Take the branch. It leads to the same destination. There are just a few more twists and turns that require some different skills. But the scenery is awesome. For more than 20 years I have been on a remarkable journey. Naturally, I will grieve leaving a ministry in which I have observed men, women, clergy and laity living out their faith through generosity. This ministry will continue under new leadership, and I will pray for them. The Methodist Home will forever possess a special place in my heart. I am at a loss for words to describe what the last 20 years have meant to my family and me. However, the Bishop has asked me to travel a different route. The destination of both journeys is the same. Both make the Kingdom of God tangible on earth as it is in heaven, and along with the many other ministries of the Conference, they glorify Christ. My new role in the cabinet will allow me to witness new facets of ministry, and some different twists and turns to be navigated. I am sincerely humbled that Bishop King would ask me serve on the cabinet. I feel a beautiful sense of privilege and overwhelming challenge. ADVOCATE: Having served on the transition team and now playing a key role as a member of the cabinet, how do you envision your role as a District Superintendent under this new structure? 3

DR. LANFORD: Though the geographical area of the districts is enlarged, that does not mean our ability to engage in personal, face-to-face ministry is diminished. It does mean I must possess good time management skills. I greatly admire those who served before me, and those with whom I will serve. A lot of prayer, study, and dialogue has gone into the work of developing the new structure, ensuring that together we can effectively evangelize and disciple. If there is one thing I ve learned through the years, it is the fact that a job description for ministers is always open-ended. Living together in the body of Christ often introduces us to new avenues of ministry and exposes us to challenges we may have never anticipated. Therefore, much of what is required of me has yet to be discovered. However, God is always present and equips us with the gifts and graces necessary for ministry. I cannot express how eager I am to witness what God is doing and going to do in our conference. ADVOCATE: What are your hopes and prayers for the North Central District? DR. LANFORD: I have cherished as gifts the churches and positions in which I served. My tenure in the conference is now long enough to earnestly say our conference is comprised of remarkable laity and clergy. While working for the Foundation, I learned that a godly heart often gives more than asked, and attempts more than we thought possible. I want our churches to awaken to the awesome potential they have in Christ. I want them to become salt and light for one another and the world. One of my favorite texts is John 13. John records that Jesus knew he came from God, that the father had given all things into his hands, and he was going to God. I pray our district knows that their D.S. knows from where he came. I know, as Paul expressed, by the grace of God I am what I am. I want them to have confidence that I realize God has placed me in this position at this moment in time. Consequently, they will know that I accept this ministry as another gift, at a pivotal time in our life together as the church. Finally, I pray together we develop a clear vision of going to God. God is calling us into a future that we cannot yet imagine. Yet, it is a future that is reachable, inspiring, and transforming. It is a future that redeems the world, breaks down walls, and reconciles us to God and one another. For this end, I will give all that I am, pray with all my heart, and devote every gift and grace with which God has endowed me. Dr. Wayne Moseley Coastal District ADVOCATE: What are your hopes and prayers for the new Coastal District? DR. MOSELEY: I pray that every congregation in the Coastal District will discover ways to reach the persons in their community with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I know that some are already doing this, but I pray that the passion for the lost and the "least of these" will become a burning passion of every congregation. Secondly, I pray that we will become a fully connectional district with every congregation sharing in the mission and ministry of the larger church with a sense of gratitude and pride in sharing in 4

a ministry that is greater because every congregation is doing their part by sharing in this great connection called The United Methodist Church. ADVOCATE: Having previously served on a district, how do you see your role as a District Superintendent continuing/shifting/changing as the conference moves forward into a new structure? DR. MOSELEY: The role of District Superintendent will become even more challenging as we find ways to serve 40 percent more churches and pastors. However, we serve a big God with whom all things are possible. I believe we will meet the challenges ahead of us in such a way that God will be glorified and the Kingdom of God will be strengthened. We will need greater participation by both clergy and laity to reach these goals. We will also need to look at new ways to accomplish the tasks before us. Change must no longer be seen as an enemy but as a companion in this process. Rev. Chris Ramsey Northeast District ADVOCATE: What are your hopes and prayers for the new Northeast District? REV. RAMSEY: My hopes and prayers for the Northeast District are that, along with the other five new districts of the South Georgia Annual Conference, we continue our trend of becoming more effective at growing a Christ-like world. In this way, the South Georgia Annual Conference will continue to be a sacred presence in our communities, our state, our nation, and our world, as we live into our mission to make disciples for Jesus Christ. ADVOCATE: Having previously served on a district, how do you see your role as a District Superintendent continuing/shifting/changing as the conference moves forward into a new structure? REV. RAMSEY: The District Superintendent s role has been on course to move beyond that of supervision and administration to also include the role of missional strategist. While keeping our vision To Grow a Christ-like World in focus, District Superintendents are called upon to coach the pastors of their districts while assisting to equip the people and committees who make up the framework of the churches of the South Georgia Annual Conference to do ministry. Being called first as pastors, District Superintendents are to display Christ-like love as we endeavor to remain accountable to Christ and encourage others also called by God to remain mutually accountable in love. In this way, realistic and obtainable goals can be set and accomplished to advance the mission set before the body of Christ to make disciples of all nations. 6 South Georgia United Methodists can now easily stay up to date on breaking conference news and upcoming events with the newly released South Georgia mobile app. The new mobile app is available free of charge for iphone and Android phones/tablets. In addition to the calendar and news, features include connections to both the church and clergy locators. Users can easily view and interact with conference social media: Facebook, Vimeo, Instagram, Pinterest, and Twitter. Users can also receive up-to-the-minute alerts and message notifications sent out by the South Georgia Conference communications office. I am really excited about having this app as a resource for clergy and laity in the South Georgia Conference, said Kelly Roberson, Director of Communications. Having news and information that is easily accessible makes the content we are sharing more convenient, and the more convenient, the more people can stay informed. In the U.S., nearly 200 million persons own and use smartphones not only for telephone calls but as hand-held computers. Most persons with smartphones have downloaded 40 or more apps to connect to their favorite entertainment, organizations, and information. Mobile apps are now within reach of the local church, too. United Methodist Communications Techshop has partnered with OCV (formerly Ourchurchvideos) to offer discounted non-profit pricing on mobile app development through and on live video streaming via In today s world, mobile apps offer the local church a better way to connect with their members, said Suzy Keenan, communications strategist with OCV. And mobile apps can be a new method for outreach an innovative way for members to share all they love about their church with their family, friends, and neighbors. In addition to The South Georgia Conference, OCV has built mobile apps for the Eastern Pennsylvania, North Georgia, Great Plains, Iowa, and Northwest Texas Annual Conferences, as well as for the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR). Mobile apps are also in development for the Texas and Arkansas Conferences. To access the South Georgia Conference s app, search South Georgia UMC in the Google Play or Apple stores. Focused on the Call of God FOCUS ON THE VISION DENISE WALTON As you reflect on your relationship with God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, can you identify times when you felt really close to God and sensed in your heart that God had something for you to do? In his book, Hearing God s Call, author Ben Campbell Johnson writes: God has always called human beings to share in the divine mission in the world and he still does. God calls men and women to ordained ministry and he calls other followers of Jesus Christ, laity, to special ministries both in the church and outside the church. The call of God comes long before you hear it, it lingers until you name it, and then it never completely goes away! The call of God, while mysterious, is not limited to a few, but is available for all believers of Jesus Christ. It requires discernment both personal and within the community of believers. The call of God is uninterrupted. God is always calling! As we journey through the season of Lent and Eastertide, the church is called to disciple persons being initiated into the Christian life in baptism. The church is also called to help persons in the community of faith focus on the journey toward Easter and reaffirm the baptismal covenant. For some, the journey will involve reducing distractions in our lives, embracing simple living, and fasting. For others, the journey through Lent and Eastertide will focus on adding something positive. How has your church answered the call of God to invite and engage others to join the journey of Lent through Easter? Remember, God is always calling, but we must choose to answer the call. For more information, contact the Valdosta District Office at Hey, wanna write for a Bible? LAUGH & LEARN CATHY LEE PHILLIPS About this time last year, an editor with Zondervan Publishing called and asked, Cathy, how would you like to write for a Bible? That question stunned me into silence. I stumbled for an answer and finally said, Uh, I thought that book was finished. She laughed and then invited me to write four short devotionals for a new Study Bible being published by the Zondervan Corporation. This publisher is well-known for their New International Version of the Bible. They also publish Study Bibles targeted for a multitude of groups mothers, senior adults, men, women, youth, etc. Zondervan s recent research, however, revealed they had missed a large segment of the population Single Women. That includes me. Being single is not a choice I made. Life made it for me when my husband, Rev. Jerry E. Phillips, died in 1992 due to complications from a heart transplant he received in Rejection of his new heart created blood clots and one abruptly lodged in his pulmonary artery. Everything stopped. No blood flowed and his new heart was stilled forever. The night Jerry died, I felt like a big W was plastered on my forehead and became part of my identity. Widow. At 33? That was not anything I planned or expected as part of my life, but that didn t matter. Life is what happens moment to moment the joyous, the traumatic, the ordinary. Faith is believing knowing that God loves, strengthens, and encourages me not only to endure, but to overcome the devastation. God s grace has carried me into a new ministry of writing and speaking about the things I learned, including the days I simply survived as well as the days when I began to feel joyful and alive again! Still, I desperately missed having my husband beside me. For a long time I felt like the only single person in the world because most of my friends were coupled-up, cheering children at soccer games, enjoying family vacations, and simply spending time with friends who had their same interests. No one knew what to do with a 33-year-old grieving widow. I didn t know what to do with myself. This reality fueled my loneliness and depression and I became convinced I was totally alone on the planet. 11

Widows and widowers who once shared life with a loved one are shocked and dazed when they are suddenly alone. And not just those who have lost a spouse to death. Millions of marriages end in divorce, again, leaving people traumatized and suddenly alone. Some women have been abandoned by spouses. Many women (and men) chose not to marry at all. The latest U.S. Census reports that the number of single women in America (whether single, divorced, or widowed) is greater than the number of women who are married. Guess I shouldn t have felt so all alone after all! Too bad I didn t know then that millions of other single women were sharing my joys and struggles. We all face issues and challenges that make our lives unique. I am excited that a new resource is devoted to women experiencing the highs and lows of the single lifestyle. Fulfilled, the NIV Study Bible for Single Women, addresses the emotions, challenges, and hopes of this segment of our society. Because being solitary is nothing new, several single women in the Scripture are profiled. We can be enlightened by women who lived centuries ago. In addition, significant verses related to the solo lifestyle are highlighted. Hey, wanna write for a Bible? Yes, that book has been finished. I am in no way qualified to add to the Sacred Scripture. For this Study Bible, however, I was asked to be one of several women around the United States to pen devotionals written for single women by single women. With Scripture provided by the publisher, I wrote words I pray will speak to women around the world. Long ago, when I played on a farm and dreamed of writing, I could never have envisioned such an opportunity. Because of my background, unique events, and life as a single woman, I was asked to share my journey and encourage others who feel completely alone. I am honored. Humbled. And excited to be a part of this project. But hear me! I am smart enough to know full well that my greatest contribution to making the Scripture come alive to others is not through my writing. These Holy Words have their greatest impact when I when WE study them, obey them, and hold them close in our hearts and allow ourselves to be molded into a living witness to the greatest love of all. 13 Sunday school lesson for the week of March 23, 2014 By Dr. Hal Brady Lesson Scripture: Revelation 5:6-13 How do we celebrate the fulfillment of a dream? Perhaps we take a trip to celebrate a wedding anniversary or throw a party to mark a milestone in our education or have an open house to note the completion of a new facility. But the emphasis of today s lesson is on how Christ s victory and worthiness as The Lamb of God is celebrated in extravagant praise and worship by the multitude of the redeemed. Before noting John s specific vision, a word about the Book of Revelation seems appropriate. The Book of Revelation is comprised of a series of visions witnessed by John, who identifies himself as a servant (1:1) and your brother (1:9). John is imprisoned on the isle of Patmos in the Aegean Sea off the coast of what is today Turkey. In sharing his visionary experiences, John frequently uses symbolic language which seems extremely strange to us: beasts, dragons, four dreaded horses, etc. Yet, for all that symbolizes the power of evil, evil is not the theme of the book. Rather, from start to finish, Revelation resounds with the glory and triumph of Jesus Christ. In chapters 4 and 5, the focus is heaven. These chapters describe John s vision of God on the throne and of the Lamb of God which is Jesus Christ. John begins by saying that he sees a door standing open in heaven and hears a trumpet-like voice again, Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this. (4:1). Being transformed and transported by the Spirit, John is enabled to pass through the door into heaven and gaze on the majestic spectacle of a throne and of the Lord God Almighty seated on the throne (4:2). In what follows, John attempts to describe the glory and grandeur of God and the response, worship and activities of those around the throne. Now, John s vision continues to unfold in chapter 5. Here John s attention is drawn to a scroll that is held in the right hand of the One seated upon the throne. Written on the inside and on the back, the scroll is sealed with seven seals (5:1). As scholars suggest, the scroll is the book of the eternal decree of God. Suddenly, John begins to weep because no one can be found worthy enough to open the scroll to carry out God s plan for human history. Then one of the elders says, Don t weep. Look! The Lion of the tribe of Judah, and the Root of David, has emerged victorious so that he can open the scroll and its seven seals. (5:5). The images of the Lion of Judah and the Root of David were traditional Old Testament prophecies referring to the coming of the Messiah (Genesis 49:9; Isaiah 1:1, 10). Most Jews were expecting a Messiah who would come in power and might to conquer their enemies and establish a new kingdom. But with Jesus entry into Jerusalem and his death, these traditional messianic expectations were turned upside down. This Jesus would conquer alright, but not by might. Rather, he 13

would conquer through the power of self-sacrificial love. The might of Christ is the power of Christ. Thus, it s the image of a lamb, rather than a lion, that is used to describe the Messiah. But back to John s vision! When he looks up, he sees a slaughtered lamb on the throne. He sees a gruesome bloody figure who has endured a violent death but who now lives and reigns, surrounded by worshipers. This wounded Lamb is seen as having seven horns and seven eyes. Scholars tell us that seven horns mean that Christ has complete power and the seven eyes mean that he sees and knows all things. To be sure, this prophesied and victorious One is worthy to open the scroll and its seven seals. Upon opening the scroll, however, the Lamb is about to disclose what the scroll contains. In short, Jesus does not change the divine plan; he unfolds its eternal and unchangeable nature by his obedience, even to death on the cross. Now, the Book of Revelation makes a significant transformation in the way the Lamb of God is portrayed. The image of the lamb as a poor, helpless creature is no more. The Lamb represents the triumphant presence of God who wins the victory over evil. In fact, we are told that the Lamb becomes the earthly embodiment of the power of God! Again, I repeat, this power does not come from strength or force, but from self-sacrificing love. Jesus, the Worthy Lamb, conquered both evil and death by giving of his own life. Heavenly Response So, what is the response to this triumphant Lamb of God who is worthy of opening the scroll and its seven seals? Praise! There is glorious praise in heaven that is accompanied by incense and harps. The 24 elders fall down before the Lamb and offer golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints (5:8). As we are reminded, this is John s first hint of participation of the church s worship on earth with that of the church in heaven. We confess this same idea in the Apostles Creed. Among other statements of faith, we say, I believe in the communion of saints. The communion of saints, as John expresses it here, is the unity of worship of the church militant on earth with that of the church triumphant in heaven. The prayers of the believers are mixed with the worship of the angels and archangels and all the host of heaven, in adoration of God and the Lamb. Momentarily, the power of worship is picked up by immeasurable host of angels, numbering in millions. Not only do the four living creatures, the elders, and the angels unite, but all creation joins in adoration and praise to God and to the Lamb. What a picture of hope and sense of victory for all John s hearers (including us) as we face the continuing earthly struggles that are before us. Our Worship 14

Certainly, one of the hallmarks of John s glimpse into heaven is worship. He sees persons, groups, and multitudes gathered together in song, adoration, and praise. And you and I are invited to partake of that heavenly experience right here on earth. It is at least one element of the hereafter that we can engage in here and now. Now, knowledge of this profound unity of heavenly and earthly worship should bring about better planning and stronger participation for of our own worship experiences. Using Revelation chapter 5 as our guide, the following are a few things to note about worship in heaven: First, note that all creatures are worshiping. Second, recognize the importance of singing. As we have long suspected, singing and music are not just uniquely human experiences. When we join our voices in music we are part of a larger chorus of praise that is eternal in the heavens. That old excuse, I can t carry a tune in a bucket is no longer valid. Finally, and most important, the focus of heavenly worship is directed toward the throne of God and the Lamb that was slain. There are no distractions or diversions. All eyes are on the Lord, the one who said, I m the root and descendent of David, the bright morning star (Rev. 22:16). So let it be with us! Action Plan: 1. Discuss the impact of the Lamb s sacrifice on our lives. 2. How can we make worship more meaningful? Dr. Hal Brady is a retired pastor who continues his ministry through Hal Brady Ministries ( He can be reached at hal@halbradyministries.com. Triumphant and Victorious Sunday school lesson for the week of March 30, 2014 By Dr. Hal Brady Lesson Scripture: Zachariah 9:9; Matthew 21:1-11 Whenever there is a celebrity awards event the crowds gather. The red carpet is extended, limousines are numerous, interviews are plentiful, photographers are busy taking pictures and the television cameras are rolling. The onlookers are filled with joyful excitement as they spy one or more of their favorite actors passing by. For sure, the motives of the crowds gathered are different, but they are all focused on seeing the celebrities. But today we are dealing with Palm Sunday and a parade to remember. Up to this point, Jesus had stayed out of the limelight. He had tried to keep a low profile, always urging those he had assisted to tell no one. But the time had come for some recognition, and it had nothing to do with Jesus conceit. 15

Rather, it had everything to do with who Jesus was, the love He represented, the mission He came to fulfill and the task He wanted His followers to accomplish. What about the crowds? We are told that the crowds on that Palm Sunday in Jerusalem were larger than usual. It was the season of a major Jewish festival, and so the population of an already large city was inflated with visitors and pilgrims. Yet we know almost nothing about any of them. But they were lining the streets, cheering, waving palm branches and throwing their clothes before the man riding on the donkey. Shouts were heard throughout the crowds, Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven! (Matthew 21:9). What was the motivation for these people to praise and honor Jesus on that Palm Sunday in Jerusalem? First, at the Passover season, Messianic excitement always ran high. With pilgrims crowding into Jerusalem both from settlements inside and outside of Palestine, hope for the appearance of the Messiah was ready to be ignited. Second, Jesus miracles, especially the raising of Lazarus from the dead (John 11:43), stimulated renewed interest in Jesus. Some in the crowds imagined Jesus as a miraculous liberator while the religious leaders saw him as a threat to the nation. Third, additional excitement was caused by Jesus riding on a colt, fulfilling Zachariah s prophecy of the messianic king who comes to liberate his people (Zachariah 9:9-13; Matthew 21:4,5). The prophet Zachariah lived and preached during the last quarter of the sixth century B.C. At that time, Jerusalem was still a city in ruins. It was only beginning to emerge from the crisis of the Babylonian conquest and exile. The Jews had begun to return and rebuild for only 20 years. Yet in the midst of all that bedlam, Zachariah foresees a reason for Jerusalem to rejoice. Zachariah looks forward and says, Lo, your king comes to you! It was a powerful, hopeful promise, which Matthew later understood to be fulfilled by Jesus triumphant entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. After walking more than 100 miles from Caesarea Philippi, Jesus decision to ride the last mile on a donkey could only be a deliberate attempt to make his claim as the messianic king. Fourth, the crowds were excited because some identified Jesus as a prophet and being a prophet in ancient Israel was a very exalted rank. A person did not become a prophet by birth or ambition or election. A prophet was chosen by God. Specifically, the crowds were saying, This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth in Galilee (Matthew 21:11). Fifth, some in the crowds on that Palm Sunday were shouting, Hosanna to the Son of David!... (Matthew 21:9) Scholars help us understand that the word hosanna generally doesn t mean praise or welcome but rather is a cry for help: Save, we pray. Then these scholars added that the Son of David title is a significant affirmation of the faith that Jesus is the one promised through centuries of Scripture, the Messiah. 16

In a sermon preached years ago, I discussed the makeup of the Palm Sunday crowds and why they were there. Though not original with me, I mentioned four groups gathered there the religiously curious, the religiously incorrect, the religiously admiring, and the religiously authentic. Now, we have been reminded that the acclaim of the crowds on Palm Sunday came form their own expectations of what they wanted Jesus to be. But for Jesus, the meaning of his arrival on Palm Sunday was much more. Jesus and Palm Sunday New Testament scholar T.W. Manson says that Jesus went up to Jerusalem to claim his kingdom, which is the kingdom of God, to call men and women to enter the kingdom, to break their allegiance to the kingdoms of the world, and to bring them to their one true loyalty and their only true peace, all this lies behind the resolve to go to Jerusalem. And, of course, Jesus didn t come to Jerusalem riding a great white horse symbolizing that He was a mighty conqueror (earthly warrior king). Instead he entered Jerusalem riding a donkey, a little beast of burden, symbolizing that we was altogether a different kind of king. A key phrase here is humble and mounted on a donkey (Matthew 21:5). Underline it! Jesus entered on a donkey. Scholars inform us that this style of arrival was deliberately arranged by Jesus; as it had been from the very beginning. Surely the incarnate Son of God, whose word controlled the wind and the waves, could have entered Jerusalem anyway he pleased. Yet he entered Jerusalem in the very same way he had entered and lived in the world born in a stable and taking the form of a slave he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death even death on a cross (Philippians 2:7, 8). As I said, Jesus is altogether a different kind of king. Jesus kingdom is a kingdom of peace and love and non-violence, and not as the crowds expected a kingdom of might and prejudice and violence. Hear me now! By His coming to Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, Jesus is compelling people to make up their minds about Him and His kingdom. To love God and your fellow human being may be difficult to do alright, but it is not complicated to understand. Jesus had illustrated it as every point. Palm Sunday was/is the time for people to make up their minds about Jesus and his kingdom. That He Came Concerning Palm Sunday, we have considered the motivations of the crowds as to why they came, and we have looked at Jesus for the reason as to why He came. Now, we focus on the fact that He came. Matthew sounded the prophet Zachariah s declaration: Look your king is coming to you (Matthew 21.5; Zachariah 9:9). Scholars make clear that in this simple phrase we discover a glorious truth about our God: He comes to us. The reasonable thing is for us to come to God. We should seek God and approach his throne with an attitude of prayer, humility and trembling. But astonishingly, it happens the other way around: that God 17

should come to us. Jesus states it in Revelation, I am standing at the door knocking, if you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in to you (3:20). No question, that s a cause for us to greatly rejoice. Action Plan 1. Had you been part of this crowd, what motivation would you have had to praise Jesus? 2. Why did Jesus come to Jerusalem on Palm Sunday? Dr. Hal Brady is a retired pastor who continues his ministry through Hal Brady Ministries ( He can be reached at hal@halbradyministries.com.
