4 St. Peter Parish From the Director of Faith Formation Cambridge, MA This Sunday we celebrate the Epiphany of the Lord. We hear in Matthew s Gospel the story of the Magi, who follow an astrological sign and travel from the East to worship the young Jesus. Epiphany means manifestation or showing forth. Magi (plural of magus) is a term used since the 6th Century BCE. It has had different meanings over time, such as practitioners of magic, including astrology, and is more usually translated in English as wise men. They were Gentiles people outside the Jewish world. They bring exotic gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh (good spelling-bee words). Their symbolic significance outweighs their intrinsic value. They foreshadow Jesus role in salvation. Gold represents his kingship. Frankincense, which was burned by priests in the Temple, represents his divinity. Myrrh, a fragrant resin, was used as a medicine and to prepare the dead for burial, anticipates Jesus death. And behold, the star that they had seen at its rising preceded them, until it came and stopped over the place where the child was. They were overjoyed at seeing the star, and on entering the house they saw the child with Mary his mother. They prostrated themselves and did him homage. Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts... The Magi, who were searching for the King of the Jews, publicly acknowledged Jesus as this king by their adulation, acclaim, and gifts. Their actions, in turn, are a manifestation to the entire world, both Jews and non-jews, and especially to us, that the child born of Mary, wife of Joseph, in Bethlehem of Judea, is the Son of God. And Lord! Ministry Party - For All Ministers Sunday, January 8, 2 4:00 p.m. Our annual get-together for all those who serve in ministry at our parish will be held on January 8, from 2-4:00 p.m. in the Parish Center. Please come and allow us to acknowledge your works of mercy and to thank you for your heartfelt service. Sacramental Life in December Let us pray for and recognize all those who were buried from our parish. In Memoriam Paul E. Lang Charles Giacobbe Cover Art by Amelia Susi Saint Peter School, Grade 3 Thank you, Amelia, for creating this wonderful scene of the Magi visiting the Holy Family in Bethlehem for our bulletin. Well done! St. Vincent de Paul Meeting Learn How to Help Our Community Wednesday, November 23, 7:00 p.m., Parish Ctr. Please join our meeting and learn about our ministry to those in need. All are welcome! Religions of the East and West, Part II Sundays, 10:15-11:15 a.m. Beginning January 22, Parish Center Join us for a workshop, led by Olga Turcotte, on the history and practice of religions around the world. In Part II, we will focus on Hinduism, Buddhism, and Shinto. Please olga.turcotte@yahoo.com to confirm your participation. Reading and reference materials will be provided. Pope Let us be touched by the tenderness that saves. Let us draw close to God who draws close to us. Let us pause to gaze upon the crib. December 29, 2016 Holy Family of Nazareth, help us to recognize the sacred nature of the family and its beauty in God s plan for humanity. December 30,

5 January 8, 2017 The Epiphany of the Lord St. Peter Parish School Christmas Art Daniel J. Harrington, SJ Scripture Lecture Presented by Dr. Adele Reinhartz Sunday, January 29, 6:15 p.m., Parish Center Our third annual Daniel J. Harrington, S.J. Memorial Lecture, entitled Christianity and Judaism: When, How, and Why Did They Part Ways? will take place on Sunday, January 29, at 6:15 p.m. in the Parish Center. Our lecturer is Professor Adele Reinhartz, Corcoran Visiting Chair in Jewish-Christian Relations at Boston College and General Editor of the Journal of Biblical Literature. Widely sought after as a lecturer, she has written many books and articles on early Christianity, the Gospel of John, and the Bible in the movies. In this lecture Professor Reinhartz will ask: How did Jews and Christians come to understand their different identities? Until recently, historians generally agreed that Christianity had definitively separated from Judaism quickly - within two generations after the death of Jesus. Now that consensus has been challenged. Some scholars argue that the separation was a slow and complicated process that took several centuries. Professor Reinhartz will look at the evidence, ask what separation really means here, and point to what was at stake in this fateful parting of the ways. Please join us for what will surely be an informative and engaging lecture! Hallelujah Demmelash, Grade 5 Gianna Cisternino, Grade 4 Ethan Pathiraja, Grade 3 Jacey Odvil, Grade 2 5
