1 we gather we worship we learn we serve JANUARY 2016 SUPPER SEMINARS 2016 Join us on Tuesdays, January 19 and January 26, for fellowship and learning opportunities! The mid-winter diversion known as Supper Seminars is an opportunity to gather our church membership and interested members of our surrounding community in a time of Christian fellowship and learning. This year s two part program will focus on Feeding God s Children and our Christian calling to do mission work in the world. On January 19, Dr. John Vest, Visiting Assistant Professor of Evangelism from Union Presbyterian Seminary, will present the seminar. On January 26, local agencies representatives from the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, Avalon, and The Salvation Army Transitional Housing, will present information about opportunities for us to do outreach right here in Williamsburg. Also, that evening a WPC Outreach representative will speak. The Supper Seminars begin each evening at 6pm in Stevenson Hall with a light supper and ends by 8pm. We will accept your generous free will offering each evening. Sign-up now in the Church Welcome Center. Come join us and invite a friend to attend with you!

3 A WORD FROM OUR PASTOR At the annual meeting of The Academy of Homiletics, Ellen and I attended the presentation of a Lifetime Achievement Award for Thomas Troegar. Tom retired last year from Yale Divinity as their preaching Professor. He has been a great inspiration to me during my ministry. So for the New Year, let me share a poem from his book, Borrowed Light: Hymn Texts, Prayers and Poems. (Oxford University Press 1994) Peace, John Density of Light Density of light that could shatter the cold rock of the moon, compacted flame that only the face of holy love could withstand, may Christ reflect your blaze to the distant satellite of my heart and melt the fear that from the orbit of my days you would scatter my dim shards to darkness. Sudden lighting in the middle of night, show me a vast land and a twisting trail are waiting where all I have seen is a wall of darkness, persist in me as hope and as strength to finish my descent from the mountain through the valley toward an open field I cannot see. Density of light, compacted flame, sudden lighting, draw me onward through thick darkness trusting that light shall spring from the grave and the coldest rock in space shall join in a blaze of song: glory, glory, glory glory be to you O God.
