3 THIRTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME THE CALL TO DISCIPLESHIP The LORD keeps faith forever, secures justice for the oppressed, gives food to the hungry. Psalm 146:7 The core vocation in the Gospel of Mark is the vocation, or call, to discipleship. Today s Gospel passage provides us with one last example of what the vocation to discipleship means, and one example of what it doesn t mean. A destitute widow shows us that discipleship means following Jesus way of service, even if it requires giving one s livelihood (or life). The scribes show us by their bad example that discipleship should entail a vocation to extend God s care to those who are most in need. In our reading from the Book of Kings another widow and her son are close to death. They too give what little they have, but they are rewarded by Elijah with food enough for a year. And the reading from the Letter to the Hebrews reminds us that Jesus sacrificed His life to bring salvation to those who eagerly await Him (Hebrews 9:28). TODAY S READINGS First Reading The widow of Zarephath had only a handful of flour and a little oil, but made a little cake for Elijah (1 Kings 17:10-16). Psalm Praise the Lord, my soul! (Psalm 146). Second Reading Christ will appear a second time to bring salvation to those who eagerly await Him (Hebrews 9:24-28). Gospel This poor widow put in more than all the other contributors (Mark 12:38-44 [41-44]). VETERANS DAY CEREMONY AT THE WALKWAY OF HEROES THIS SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 11 th, 10:00 AM Please join Veterans, their families, local officials, and emergency responders for this traditional celebration of Veterans Day at the Walkway of Heroes Memorial, (located at the intersection of Independence Avenue and Lester Drive in Orangeburg. The Memorial Park is dedicated to Veterans of all Armed Forces who served in World War II and previous Wars. It includes a bronze sculpture of a soldier, an anchor, cannons, and other armaments. Dedicated over 50 years ago, it was constructed by volunteers largely through the sale of commemorative bricks. This Veterans Day event is hosted by the Raymond DeMeola VFW Memorial Post 1615 of Blauvelt. God bless America, and God bless our Veterans!! BELLS OF PEACE A WORLD WAR I REMEMBRANCE THIS SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 11 AT 11 AM The American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the World War I Centennial Commission have announced a nation-wide bell tolling at 11 AM on November 11, The bell tolling is to remember the sacrifices of all Veterans of World War I, but especially the 116,516 service members who gave their lives in defense of our country during that War. World War I, The Great War, ended with an Armistice at the 11 th hour on the 11 th day of the 11 th month in The Centennial Commission, through its Bells of Peace: A World War I Remembrance initiative asks that, on this 100 th Armistice Anniversary Year, all citizens remember their sacrifices and encourages them and their organizations to toll bells twenty-one times at 11 AM on November 11, 2018 in their honor. The Carl A. Schelin American Legion Post 1271 in Tappan has asked churches, synagogues, houses of worship, fire departments, and other organizations to participate in this Centennial Remembrance of the end of World War I by tolling our bells twenty-one times on November 11 at 11 AM. We re very happy to do our part. TODAY S SECOND COLLECTION ENERGY/FUEL Our Second Collection will be to help pay our Church s higher Energy and Fuel costs, especially during the coming winter months. 4 VETERANS DAY TRIBUTE AND REFLECTION Veterans Day is an important day for showing appreciation to members of our military, past and present. Veterans Day brings about a great sense of pride in our country, a day when we are especially thankful for the service and sacrifice of those who chose, and those who continue to choose, to defend our nation. We encourage you to reflect on the meaning of this day. If you're looking for an appropriate way to honor a Veteran in your life, or would like to contribute in a way that's meaningful for Veterans everywhere, here's a list of suggestions to start you off. 1. Attend a Parade or Service Attend a Veterans Day event in your area -- not just a picnic with friends but an honest-to-goodness parade or service for Veterans. Roy Rogers said, "We can't all be heroes; someone has to sit on the curb and clap as they go by." Veterans Day is a great opportunity to do just that! 2. Donate There are a lot of wonderful organizations who offer all manner of support, services, and appreciation for our service members. (To get a few ideas for donations, see the next article.) 3. Fly a flag - correctly Veterans Day is a great opportunity to fly the flag! Just make sure you're observing the proper rules for display. Not sure exactly what those are? Check out Military.com's Guide to the Flag. 4. Ask someone about his or her service It seems like we all know someone who has served and Veterans Day is a great time to ask them about their service. Some questions to get started are: What did you do in the military? How long did you serve? Did anyone else in your family serve? Why did you choose to go into the service branch you did? Sometimes you don't have to say anything, just listen and give them your full attention. 5. Write If you know a Veteran, give or mail a simple card that recognizes them on Veterans Day. If you don't know a Veteran, look up the closest military installation and send one there. Small acts of recognizing someone's service are always appreciated. 6. Don't Confuse Veterans Day with Memorial Day Veterans Day is a time to thank those who are serving or have served and are still with us. Memorial Day is to reflect and remember those who lost their lives in service to their country. Confusing the two or combining the two somehow diminishes the importance of both. 7. Visit a VA Hospital Find out what the policies are at your nearest VA hospital for interacting with patients or volunteering, and spend the day with a Veteran. Many VA facilities will have events on Veterans Day or a special lunch you can help prepare. Even if you never interact with a Veteran, helping at a facility is a wonderful way to give back. HOW TO HELP OUR VETERANS If you would like to support Veterans, Servicemen and women, and their families who sacrificed along with them, here are a few good places to start. Disabled American Veterans Disabled American Veterans offers a variety of services to disabled Veterans and their families. DAV provides invaluable service to wounded Veterans providing members (Veterans and their families) help with disability assistance, their VA pensions, job programs, and more. It receives no government funding, so donations and gifts are crucial to keep providing services to Veterans. Wounded Warrior Project Wounded Veterans all require a different recovery process. The Wounded Warrior Project provides rehabilitation, activities, and career counseling for our nation's Wounded Warriors and their families. You can support the Wounded Warrior Project in a number of ways: sending letters to an injured service member, giving a monthly gift, or making a donation in honor of a loved one. Homes for Our Troops Homes for Our Troops builds and donates specially adapted custom homes nationwide for severely injured post 9/11 Veterans, to enable them to rebuild their lives. Most of these Veterans have sustained injuries including multiple limb amputations, partial or full paralysis, and/or severe traumatic brain injury. These homes restore some of the freedom and independence our Veterans sacrificed while defending our country, and enable them to focus on their family, recovery, and rebuilding their lives. The USO The USO provides a way to support active-duty troops. Though the USO does take cash donations to provide many services, there are better ways to support the troops during the holiday season. The holidays are a particularly tough time for many troops and their families. The USO offers USO Operation Phone Home, which delivers a $50 prepaid international calling card to troops, allowing them to make up to 140 calls home. FROM HOME TO HEROES HELPING THOSE WHO SERVE The mission of From Home to Heroes is to connect families and individuals with American soldiers deployed overseas to show our continued love, support and compassion as they defend our great nation. If you are interested in sending care packages, letters, or cards to a soldier overseas, please contact St. Catharine s Parishioner, Lydia Rubino, via to scrawnysquid1@aol.com. Also, if you know of a hero who is deployed, please contact Lydia and she will gladly add their name and address to her list of heroes. These brave men and women are always so grateful to hear from home! Thank you!

5 DON T FORGET ABOUT A SOLDIER S BEST FRIEND Dogs are a big part of the lives of our Soldiers and Veterans. From military working dogs on the front lines, to guide dogs providing safety and companionship for wounded Veterans, military service dogs need love, too. There are many programs to help provide for these brave dogs, The Petco Foundation is just one. While the therapeutic benefits of owning a dog are widely accepted, there is mounting evidence that interacting with dogs can relieve stress, lower blood pressure, and provide critical emotional support for sufferers of PTSD. Man s (and woman s) best friend, indeed! DID YOU KNOW? Everyone has seen and, hopefully, worn one of these little red poppies at this time of year. But, do you know the symbolism of the poppy? Inspired by the World War I poem, In Flanders Fields, these red poppies were adopted by the American Legion as their official Symbol of Remembrance in The red represents the blood of all those who gave their lives. The black represents the mourning of those who didn t have their loved ones return home. And, the green leaf represents the grass and crops growing and future prosperity after the War destroyed so much. The leaf should be in the 11 AM clock position on your lapel to represent the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, the time that World War I formally ended. So, the next time you see a Veteran selling poppies in front of ShopRite, please make a donation, take a poppy, and say, Thank you for your service!
