March 29, Corinthians: Whose Ministry is It, Anyway? The Ministry of Reconciliation Lesson Scripture: 2 Corinthians 5 HCSB Key Passage 2 Corinthians 5:11-21 Dig Deeper? You can do additional reading and research on 2 Corinthians 5 using the commentary at: Step by Step through the Week Monday: Begin your week of study by praying that the Holy Spirit would reveal God s truth to you and provide the wisdom you will need to obey God s word. Read 2 Corinthians 5 Read the following chapter summary: Paul explains the tension between the eternal and temporal: our earthly tent will one day be replaced by an eternal building. We long to be clothed by our heavenly garments to escape our earthly nakedness. The Spirit is our deposit and promise that this will one day be so. This gives us confidence and faith, even in our temporal state. Yet, whether we are on earth or in heaven, we should seek to please the Lord, because one day He will pass judgment over our works in the body. Paul then implores the saints to take these truths as motivation to share the gospel; this is his passion and zeal (his craziness ). Christ s love is Paul s motivation for ministry and the gospel is his message. The gospel changes every man into a new creation as he is reconciled to God. We now have peace with God and are appointed His ambassadors to the world to share His message. Our message to the nations is this: Jesus, the spotless Lamb, died on the cross for our sin to reconcile us to God and present us righteous before Him. Identify key words or major ideas in the chapter. Reread the passage. What has the Spirit of God taught you after reading through this chapter?

Tuesday: Read 2 Corinthians 5. If possible, read the passage in two or three different versions of the Bible. Multiple versions are available at Observe: 2 Corinthians 5:11-15 When Paul uses a therefore, he is referring back to a previous idea. Summarize Paul s message in verses What does Paul say that indicates the complaints some in the church had against him? What is his primary motivation for ministry? Examine: 2 Corinthians 5:11-15 FEAR OF GOD: For the unbeliever, the fear of God is the fear of the judgment of God and eternal death, which is eternal separation from God (Luke 12:5; Heb 10:31). For the believer, the fear of God is something much different. The believer's fear is reverence of God. Hebrews 12:28-29 is a good description of this: Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our God is a consuming fire. This is the motivating factor for us to surrender to the Creator of the Universe. Proverbs 1:7 declares, The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge. Until we understand who God is and develop a reverential fear of Him, we cannot have true wisdom. True wisdom comes only from understanding who God is and that He is holy, just, and righteous. The fear of God is the basis for our walking in His ways, serving Him, and, yes, loving Him. Some redefine the fear of God for believers to respecting Him. While respect is definitely included in the concept of fearing God, there is more to it than that. A biblical fear of God, for the believer, includes understanding how much God hates sin and fearing His judgment on sin even in the life of a believer. Hebrews 12:5-11 describes God s discipline of the believer. While it is done in love (Heb 12:6), it is still a fearful thing. Believers are not to be scared of God. We have no reason to be scared of Him. We have His promise that nothing can separate us from His love (Rom 8:38-39). Fearing God means having such a reverence for Him that it has a great

impact on the way we live our lives. The fear of God is respecting Him, obeying Him, submitting to His discipline, and worshipping Him in awe. Once again, read 5:1-10. How do these verses present a case for Paul s fear of God and his desire to persuade people? Outline Paul s argument. Apply: 2 Corinthians 5:11-15 How would you respond to someone who asked: why do you serve God? Describe a time when someone in the church questioned your motive for ministry. How did you respond? Wednesday: Read 2 Corinthians 5. If possible, read the passage in two or three different versions of the Bible. Multiple versions are available at Observe: 2 Corinthians 5:16-19 According to verses 16 and 17, what happens to those who are in Christ? Reconciliation is a key word in this passage; reconciliation is an act involving two people. According to Paul, what is God s part in the process? What is our part?

Verses 18 and 19 express the same idea in two different ways. State this idea in your own words. Examine: 2 Corinthians 5:16-19 RECONCILIATION: Imagine two friends who have a fight or argument. The good relationship they once enjoyed is strained to the point of breaking. They cease speaking to each other; communication is deemed too awkward. The friends gradually become strangers. Such estrangement can only be reversed by reconciliation. To be reconciled is to be restored to friendship or harmony. The Bible says that Christ reconciled us to God (Rom 5:10; 2 Cor 5:18; Col 1:20-21). The fact that we needed reconciliation means that our relationship with God was broken. Since God is holy, we were the ones to blame; our sin alienated us from Him. Romans 5:10 says that we were enemies of God: For if, when we were God s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life! When Christ died on the cross, He satisfied God s judgment and made it possible for God s enemies, us, to find peace with Him. Our reconciliation to God, then, involves the exercise of His grace and forgiveness. The result of Jesus sacrifice is that our relationship has changed from enmity to friendship. I no longer call you servants Instead, I have called you friends (John 15:15). We were God s enemies, but are now His friends. We were in a state of condemnation because of our sins, but we are now forgiven. We were at war with God, but now have the peace that transcends all understanding (Phlp 4:7). (adapted from gotquestions.org) In verses 18 and 19, Paul says we have been giving a ministry of reconciliation with a message of reconciliation. How does God reconcile us to Himself? What role do we play in reconciling others to God? Apply: 2 Corinthians 5:16-19 Is every ministry in the church a part of this reconciliation process? Why or why not? How does your personal ministry contribute to the ministry of reconciliation?

Thursday: Read 2 Corinthians 5. If possible, read the passage from a different version of the Bible. Observe: 2 Corinthians 5:20-21 Once again, Paul uses therefore in verse 20 to refer back to a previous thought. How did he become an ambassador for Christ? According to these verses, what are the actions of an ambassador for Christ? What is the message about sin and righteousness? Examine: 2 Corinthians 5:20-21 AMBASSADORS FOR CHRIST: Generally speaking, an ambassador is a respected official acting as a representative of a nation. Sent to a foreign land, the ambassador s role is to reflect the official position of the sovereign body that gave him authority. Writing to the Corinthians, Paul likens his own calling to that of an ambassador, and he urges all Christians to consider themselves ambassadors for Christ. The gospel of reconciliation was always at the heart of Paul s preaching: For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel (1 Cor 1:17). Christians are God s ambassadors in that they have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel (1 Thess 2:4). As we go through this world, we represent another Kingdom (John 18:36), and it is our responsibility to reflect the official position of heaven. We are in this world, but not of it (John 17:16). God s ambassadors are to be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves (Matt 10:16). Empowered by the Holy Spirit, we must take the message of our King to the ends of the earth (Acts 1:8), imploring men and women everywhere to be reconciled to God. (adapted from gotquestions.org) God has always used ambassadors to share His message with the world. What are some scriptural examples (Old and New Testament) of people chosen by God to be His representatives in the world?

Apply: 2 Corinthians 5:20-21 An ambassador should reflect the character of the one he or she represents. Do others see and hear Christ through you? If not, what needs to change about your life for you to become a faithful ambassor? Who do you know who needs to be reconciled to God? What is your message of reconciliation to them? Friday: Read 2 Corinthians 5 and the following devotional from Today in the Word (Moody Bible Institute): John Stott died on July 27, He was known as one of Evangelicalism s leading voices as a prolific writer, expositor of the Scriptures, and framer of the historic Lausanne Covenant. At the announcement of his death, Billy Graham issued this statement: The evangelical world has lost one of its greatest spokesmen, and I have lost one of my close personal friends and advisors. I look forward to seeing him again when I go to Heaven. The secret to living a life like John Stott s, a life of passionate commitment to people and ministry and the gospel, is found in the passage we read today from 2 Corinthians. This text frames reality for those of us who follow Christ. There are two dimensions to life: the seen and the unseen, the temporal and the eternal. Those without the Spirit of Christ order their lives according to the first dimension, denying the existence of the second. Without an eternal perspective, there is not much to live for beyond one s own ambitions and pleasures. But the Christian is compelled by the second dimension the unseen. For the Christian, time is marching forward to a climactic point: the judgment seat of Christ. That moment in the eternal dimension gives meaning and purpose to every moment of the temporal dimension. Christ is the invisible eyewitness to every moment of every day. We will give Him an account for everything we do, say, or think. To live in this reality is to have urgency about life, to know what is ultimate, and to speak courageously about these realities to those around us. We are compelled and moved forward by the sheer delight of know-ing God s great love for us and for humanity. Walking in the fear of the Lord motivates us to share our faith with the world. It shapes our priorities, drives our ambitions, and fuels our passions. APPLY THE WORD We re often afraid to share our faith for fear that we might lose relationships. But what gives us courage in evangelism is rooting ourselves more and more securely in the realities of heaven. Pray the words John Stott prayed every morning: Father I

pray that I may live this day in Your presence and please You more and more. Lord Jesus I pray that this day I may take up my cross and follow You. Holy Spirit, I pray that this day You will... cause Your fruit to ripen in my life.
