We are excited about how God is using the Wayumi (why-yoú-me) program to mobilize the church for world evangelization by exposing believers to missions in a different way. Short-term missions trips are a good means of exposure, but not everyone can go on one. Our program offers many of the benefits of a missions trip but without leaving the country. Bible sessions focusing on God s heart for the world are a centerpiece of our program. You ll also learn about language and culture from veteran missionaries and get to interact with tribal people in our life-sized village. Wayumi is thought provoking and challenging but it s also a lot of fun! Some basics about Wayumi: We can accommodate groups up to approximately 75 in size. Arrival is Friday afternoon, in time for 6:00 supper. Departure is Sunday after lunch. Our lodging consists of apartments with twin-size beds. Semi-private restrooms and showers on each floor. Participants should bring: sleeping bag or twin-sized sheets/blanket, towel and toiletries. Pillows provided, but please bring a pillow case. No childcare provided. Cost is $69 per person age 13 and older, $35 per child age 6-12, no cost for children age 5 and under. Meals and lodging are included in the price. If you desire to book a specific weekend, please contact us for available dates, keeping in mind: A minimum of 25 adults and teens is needed to book a retreat. Two or more churches may join together to share a weekend. A $500 registration fee is due at the time of scheduling and is refundable up to 60 days before the scheduled weekend. The registration fee is applied to the final cost, with a minimum final cost of $1725 ($69 x 25 people). If your group is fewer than 25 people An Open Weekend is not reserved for a specific group but rather is open for individuals, couples, or small groups that have not had the chance to attend with a larger group. Some churches have sent one or two people in order to check out the program to see if their church would like to book a weekend. Open Weekend dates can be found at wayumi.com and clicking on the Weekend Retreats link on the right side of the page. Space is limited. Registrations will be accepted on a first come, first served basis. Registration fee is $20 per person, with the balance due upon arrival. If you have further questions, please don t hesitate to contact us. We trust that it will work out for you to join us in the near future for a memorable missions retreat.
Page 2 II. Program Description Wayumi Retreat Program A Brief Overview The Wayumi Retreat program introduces the attendee to the biblical basis for reaching every kindred, tongue, and tribe with the gospel of the Lord Jesus. Along with the biblical foundation for mission work amongst unreached people groups, the program exposes the attendee to the challenges of cross-cultural church planting, e.g. language and culture acquisition, cross-cultural Bible teaching, establishing the church, and seeing the church become truly indigenous. The attendees are also exposed to the various ministries necessary to accomplish the task of church planting amongst unreached people groups. III. Program Objectives Understand the biblical emphasis on reaching every kindred, tongue, and tribe. Exposure to the basic challenges of cross-cultural church planting. Language and culture acquisition Establishing an indigenous church Be introduced to the various ministries needed in reaching tribal people. Overview of Wayumi Sessions I. The Purpose of God on Planet Earth is a biblical look at missions. It takes the attendee from Genesis to Revelation, attempting to show God s heart for the nations, particularly in the sense of every kindred, tongue, and tribe the ethnos of the world. II. Introduction to Culture exposes the attendee to culture and the importance of understanding it for proper cross-cultural communication. The attendee is challenged regarding the need to understand culture, learns how culture is acquired, and is exposed to two case studies from South American tribal groups: Joti and Yanomamo. III. Introduction to Language presents the need to learn the vernacular of the targeted people group and its importance in clearly communicating when sharing the gospel. The attendee is exposed to the challenges of learning an unwritten language, yet also shown that it is doable. Two tribal languages, Joti and Yanomamo, are used to give the attendee a hands-on experience with another language.
Page 3 IV. Village Experience A visit to an authentic replica South American native village. The attendee will meet and interact with members of two very isolated tribal groups. The Yanomamo people are an aggressive and assertive tribe who live in remote areas of Brazil and Venezuela. The Joti people are a non-aggressive tribe who live in a small, isolated area in the jungles of Venezuela. The attendee will experience both of these cultures and even experience the thrill of eliciting and learning a few words in both of these native languages. V. Introduction to the Tribal Church answers the question What is an indigenous church? along with why it is important. The attendee is exposed to the classic three self s of an indigenous church self-governing, selfsupporting, and self-propagating. The attendee is also exposed to a Bible teaching method called chronological teaching that has proven to be very effective in seeing true worldview change and true conversion. VI. Teamwork introduces the attendee to the biblical and practical basis of teamwork. The attendee will learn God s model of a team, the body of Christ, working together to accomplish His purposes on earth. This includes learning about the wide variety of ministries that are available to those who desire to be involved in reaching unreached people groups. Wayumi staff members who have done many of these jobs take turns showing pictures and sharing their ministry on the mission field and how it fits in to the big picture. The teamwork session concludes with a short, challenging video that demonstrates the need of all of us working together as a team to bring in the harvest that God desires around the world! VII. The Joti Experience For the final session, a church planter that worked amongst the Joti people of Venezuela walks the group through the whole process as it happened in that tribe and describes what God ultimately did amongst the Joti people. A very exciting and thrilling story of what God s Word, applied by God s Spirit, did for the Joti people! VIII. Misc. The teachers are missionaries with years of experience in working with unreached peoples in areas such as Bible translation, church planting, church development, literacy programs, church leadership development, etc. Sessions are accompanied by audio/visual aids such as PowerPoint and video. To view a video clip of Wayumi go to wayumi.com.

FAQs Page 5 Does the $69 cost cover all the expenses? Yes. That covers all of the necessary expenses including food, lodging and the program. We do have a bookstore with books and souvenir items available, such as Wayumi t-shirts. Any purchases in the bookstore would be an additional expense, of course, but all required expenses are included in the $69. Is there a discount for large families? We have tried to keep costs down as much as possible. Even so, we realize that a large family could face a significant cost. For a nuclear family (parents and children), we can cap the cost at $250 for the weekend. Can I pay by credit card? At this time, we do not have a feasible way to accept credit card payments. Checks should be made out to New Tribes Mission or NTM. I m flying in. What are the best airports to use? The closest airports are Williamsport, PA (IPT) and State College, PA (SCE). IPT is 30 minutes away. SCE is one hour away. For us to pick you up and take you back, the total cost is $25 for IPT and $50 for SCE. That cost covers both ends of the trip, pickup on arrival and drop off for departure. Folks traveling together can share the cost. I m flying in. Can you provide linens so that I don t have to bring it in my luggage? We have a limited supply of linens and towels and can provide these items for those coming by air. What is the dress code at Wayumi? We don t have a dress code, per se. Jeans or other casual wear is perfectly fine. We would just ask that you dress modestly. What do I need to wear for going to the village? Will it be muddy? Is there hiking involved? You do not need to have any special clothing or footwear for the visit to the village. No hiking is involved. We don t have 25 people to come as a group. Is there still a way for me to attend? Yes. Open Weekends are for those that don t have a large enough group to book a weekend. Anyone can sign up for an Open Weekend, whether it be someone coming alone or a fairly good-sized group. Our church would like to send one or two people to check out the program to see if it would be fitting for our church. Is there a feasible way for us to do that? Yes. The Open Weekends work for that purpose. I would like to book a weekend for our church but would like to go for a different time period than Friday supper through Sunday lunch. Is it possible to change that? Yes, Friday supper through Sunday lunch are the norms for arrival and departure, but we ll work with you on the schedule that works best for you, including other days of the week, if desired. You say that there is no child care. Will the sessions hold the attention of young children? We find that kids from about 5 th grade on up are able to track with the teaching, but it depends on the child. If he or she is willing to listen, they usually find it interesting. If they have no desire to listen, then it really doesn t matter how old they are.
Page 6 Will I have to eat weird food? No. We don t serve grubs or termites. You will eat normal food. In fact, we usually receive compliments about how good the food is. Do I have to sleep in the village? No. You will sleep in a normal room. I ve heard about sleeping in hammocks in a cabin. Is that correct? Not for a retreat. The cabins and hammocks are used for the summer youth programs and for the college level course in August. You will sleep in a normal bed in a normal room. What about heating and air conditioning? Yes. Our facilities have heating and air conditioning. (We do have a couple of rooms that do not have AC yet, but as soon as we have finances, we plan to install units in those rooms. But those are the exceptions and are not used unless absolutely necessary.) What do you mean by restrooms and showers being semi-private? Each building has a number of bathrooms with a toilet, sink and a shower. You can go in, lock the door, and it s yours. So the bathroom is private while you re in there, but others may be using it when you re not in there. When it s feasible, we often assign specific rooms to specific bathrooms to make them even more private. Is Wi-Fi available? Yes Can you give me a list of things that I should take to Wayumi? Sleeping bag or twin-size sheets & blanket. Pillows are provided, but please bring a pillowcase. Towel Toiletries (soap, shampoo, toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, etc.) Bible Cash or checkbook to make final payment or for possible bookstore purchases. Any medicines that you normally need. What is the Wayumi campus address to use with a GPS or map site? 241 Old Forge Hill Rd Jersey Shore, PA How do I/we register for a weekend? You can register on line at wayumi.com or download a form from the site. Or if you prefer, we can send you a registration form as an attachment in an . If you want to book a weekend just for your group, please or call us first to make sure your desired weekend is available.
