1 The Salvation: How is your heart changed? Q: How is your heart changed? A: My heart is changed by the Holy Spirit because of the grace of God shown in the work of Christ. Memory Verse: He saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior. 2 Discussion Questions: How do you think God changes someone s heart? How is the Holy Spirit involved in this Process? Devotion: A few lessons ago we talked about how only God can change a sinner s heart. But how exactly does He change our hearts? How does that heart transplant take place so that we are enabled by Him to receive God s instructions, repent of our sin, and put our faith in Christ? God changes our hearts by the work of God the Father and God the Holy Spirit! It is a somewhat mysterious although instantaneous event where He changes our hearts to be focused on God instead of focused on sin, and continues to transform our hearts to be more and more like Jesus. In in John 6:63, Jesus says, It is the Spirit who gives life. When we are born again, we are made spiritually alive where before we were dead in our sins. The Holy Spirit comes to dwell in our hearts, giving us a new desire for knowing and connecting with God. John Piper says it this way: In the new birth, the Holy Spirit supernaturally gives us new spiritual life by connecting us with Jesus Christ through faith. The Holy Spirit connects us with Christ helps us to live in Christ who is the way, and the truth, and the life. 3 Crafts/Activities: Two hearts. Draw a line to divide a piece of paper into two. On one side draw picture of our heart before the Holy Spirit changes it. What colors, textures, and images can you use to make it appear hardened, sad, or full of sin? On the other side draw a picture of our hearts after we ve been born again. What colors, textures, and images can you use to show that it is a new heart, ready to follow God, with the Holy Spirit living inside of it? A Temple of the Spirit. Take a photo of your child and print it out, preferably in color. Have them cut out their form and glue it onto an envelope. Color and cut out the Sinner s Heart picture and the dove heart picture below. On the back of the Sinner s Heart picture write Ephesians 2:1 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins. On the back of the dove heart picture write John 6:63 It is the Spirit who gives life. 9 How is your heart changed? My heart is changed by the Holy Spirit because of the grace of God shown in the work of Christ. Let s take a little time to look closer at who the Holy Spirit is and what He does. Although an exhaustive study is more than we can do here, we can understand some basics about the Holy Spirit and His ministry in our lives and in the world. Sometimes we might imagine that the Holy Spirit is like a mystical force. But we know The Holy Spirit by Giaquinto Corrado from scripture that He is actually a person and part of the Trinity along with God the Father and with Jesus. We re going to take a look through the Bible at just a few of the verses that tell us more about the Holy Spirit and His role in our lives.
