September 1, 2016 Have you seen the Providence Campus lately? In a word, Beautiful. Thanks to the hard work of Brian Sheltra and his team at SMART LandCare, Inc., our grounds are more beautiful than ever. The trees and shrubbery are trimmed, the grass is green and the sidewalks are clean of debris. We are grateful! IN THIS ISSUE: From the Senior Pastor 2 Wednesday Schedule 3 Sermons and Service 5 Deacon Nominees 10 Fellowship 11 Missions Opportunities 13 CONNECTIONS Volume II, No.9

SENIOR PASTOR Let Us Seek to Bless Others I am still overwhelmed by the warm, generous welcome you extended, both to me and to my family, when we came to Charlotte to meet you at the end of July. Your joy, your energy, and your love for Providence Baptist Church are all contagious. That s a good thing. Thanks to Dr. Lee Canipe you - and to the power of the Holy Spirit working through you - I left Charlotte filled with joy, energy, and a genuine love for this church. Your words of encouragement and letters of prayerful support have made our initial transition from Murfreesboro to Charlotte less difficult than it might have been otherwise. I remember clearly how one of you said to me after worship on July 31, Welcome home. I do feel welcomed, and I am very glad that God is making a new home for us with you. For all that and more, I am grateful. Now, it s time for us to begin our work together. God has already equipped you with joy, energy, and a love for the church of Jesus Christ. These are three huge blessings that, together, serve as a strong foundation for ministry and a compelling witness to our neighbors in Charlotte. I don t have to tell you that we live in a broken, divided world - racially, economically, socially, politically, and in so many other tragic ways as well. The sad evidence is all around us. The church is God s answer to this brokenness, a visible sign of God s grace and a hopeful promise of the peace that the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus makes possible. He is our common ground, writes the apostle Paul, near the end of Ephesians 2, and in Him we are joined together to be a dwelling place for God. Now, what does that mean for us, as God s people gathered for worship on Randolph Road and scattered for ministry throughout Charlotte? Simply put, it means that the big tent diversity of Providence is a glimpse of God s desire to reconcile all people to Him, and to one another, in Christ Jesus. Our life together is a powerful testimony - and when we share it with abundant joy, cheerful energy, and a sincere love for God, one another, and our neighbors, I believe we re doing kingdom work in its purest form. Sam Wells, former dean of Duke Chapel and current vicar of St. Martin-in-the-Fields in London, recently wrote that Christians can do unbelievable things together if we start with one another s assets rather than deficits. In a community of fear we begin with our hurts and our stereotypes and find a hundred reasons why we can t do certain things or why certain kinds of people don t belong. But if we peel off labels, he continues, and instead see qualities like passionate or committed or generous or enthusiastic or humble, then there s no limit to what a community of hope can do. A community of hope. What a worthy way to be known - both by our neighbors and, most importantly, by God. May the joy, energy, and love of God be with this hopeful community of believers we call Providence Baptist Church, and bless us all as we seek to bless others, together, in Jesus name! Dr. Canipe will begin his tenure at Providence Baptist Church on Monday, September 19th. His first sermon as senior pastor will be given on Sunday, September 25th. The Children s Ministry is hosting a WELCOME BREAKFAST on Sunday, September 25th from 7:30am - 9:30am. Join us for this complimentary full breakfast and help us welcome the Canipe family to Charlotte and their new church home. 2

FROM THE TEACHING PASTOR Why We Are Here Jesus answered him, Are you a teacher of Israel and yet you do not understand these things? John 3:10 Danger is in the air. Not violence or terrorism. The real threat we face is of a subtler kind. We are in danger of missing why we are here. Just like Nicodemus. We learned about him a couple of Sunday mornings ago as we read from John 3:1-10. A man of high ambition, Nicodemus had succeeded in circles of power. He appeared to have everything except what he really needed. In the Gospel of John, Nicodemus came to Jesus by night, signifying a man in the dark, searching but still not finding, successful in social things, but very much lacking in spiritual things. So it is in our lives. Driven, busy, ambitious and often overwhelmed, it is far too easy to get lost in our full and demanding agendas. This is one of the dangers. Accommodating the quiet movement of God s Spirit in our lives is not easy, especially with all the distractions surrounding us, voices calling for our attention, and pressures weighing us down. Such was the struggle Jesus saw so clearly in Nicodemus. The resolution to this dilemma was necessary for his ultimate fulfillment, just as it is for ours. As John artfully tells Nicodemus story in succeeding chapters, the Gospel has a way of carrying us along, too, growing us, sometimes with grace, other times with grit. But we always have the opportunity to grow. It is never too late. From his encounter with Jesus, Nicodemus was an older, accomplished religious leader. This was not his first rodeo. Yet he began an exciting new journey highlighted by his emerging courage (John 7:50-52), growing generosity (John 19:39-40) and open discipleship. This month is a very good season to experiment with this kind of spiritual endeavor. You can begin by being grateful for whatever accomplishments you have achieved. But even more, it is a great time to begin a new awakening to the movement of God s Spirit in your life. Be aware of the people God places in your path over these coming days. Listen to what they share. Hear what they ask and notice what they observe. Discern any messages that might add to your spiritual awakening. Be sensitive to the issues you are called to confront. And as this month progresses, is there in you growing courage, deepened compassion, surprising generosity? We are called to higher paths and deeper quests. We then become increasingly aware of what we have yet to discover. Recognizing the difference between what we have and what we need is a spiritual gift that serves us well. And the ability to allow God to fill that inner place of deep spiritual need is the greatest gift you can give to yourself, your family and your friends. In doing so, like Nicodemus, you just might truly discover why you are here. May it be so Gratefully, Disciple Bible Study Letter to the Romans with Dr. Jordan Mondays beginning September 14th 6:30pm - 8:00pm Nalley Missions Center Thursday Mornings Letter to the Romans with Dr. Jordan Thursdays beginning September 8th 11:00am Nalley Missions Center Dr. David Jordan Join us for Disciple! 5 SERMONS AND SERVICE Sundays in September September 4 COMBINED 10:30am Worship Unconditional Love; It s in Our DNA Rev. Richard Landers The Lord s Supper 8:30am Worship and 11:00am Worship September 11 A Father Had Two Sons Luke 15 by Dr. David Jordan September 18 Get Down! But it IS Providence, so it ISN T surprising. We asked for help, and you stepped up in an amazing way. The Missions Committee committed to providing 120 filled backpacks to QC Family Tree, our new missions partner in Charlotte. This organization is exactly what we look for in a partner. They are focused on serving as Christ served, on welcoming folks in, because that s what you do for family. The bounty of backpacks headed to QC Family Tree! In reality, the goal of 120 backpacks was a lofty one. How would Providence respond? The answer? Overwhelmingly. You gave 145 backpacks, and members of our Missions Committee presented the filled bags to QC Family Tree at a special family dinner in August. Equally impressive is the Providence response to our monthly Missions Collection of school supplies. The WMU s collection table was filled to overflowing and required an additional surface to hold all the goodies. When Nancy Mitchell began laying out the supplies for our Burmese and Rama Road Tutoring friends to go shopping, there was an impressive display of everything our young students needed to have a successful start to their school year. The plea was given. The call was answered. You did it, Providence. And there are so many people whose lives are changed for the better as a result. Thank you! CONNECTIONS 5

MUSIC MINISTRY Something for Everyone! The Music Ministry is preparing for another great year! From our youngest voices to the most experienced musicians, we are ready to help grow musical talent for worship at Providence. Growing the love of God through music in children, the most precious gift of creation is the foundation of Growing in Grace, the curriculum we use for our children s choirs. The music is scripturally-based, and we engage the children in multiple styles as we learn about the love of God through music. Our goal is to teach children to love music while learning music skills that we share as we lead in worship. Children s music is offered Wednesday evenings from 5:45pm - 6:30pm during the school year. Preschool Music Experience for Three s Room 1420 Children s Minister Julia Wright leads this group. Our Threes are introduced to singing as a group, and enjoy movement activities, rhythm instruments, and games. Our youngest musicians are always excited to share what they have learned at the Angel Breakfast and on Children s Day. Cherub Choir Room 1205 Carrie Query will be taking the helm with our four year olds this year. The Fours continue to work together as a group, learning basic music concepts like steady beat, high-low, fast-slow, etc. They also participate in the Angel Breakfast and Children s Day, as well as Hanging of the Green and the End of Year Concert. Julia Wright Carrie Query Music Makers Room 2210 June Hall is the leader of this group of kindergartners. The curriculum is sequentially developed, so these children are really beginning to develop their musical skills through rhythm and melody. They occasionally join the school-aged children for worship participation, and always sing for the Angel Breakfast, Children s Day, Hanging of the Green, and the End of Year Concert. Children June Hall Trinity Singers Room 2232 Our 1st and 2nd grade choir is under the direction of Karen Wright. These children are getting into more serious study of music skills and are being prepared to be worship leaders. With a combination of small group activities to re-enforce skills and singing in the large group, they are advancing their musicality. Trinity Singers participate in Hanging of the Green, Palm Sunday, Children s Day, and the End of Year Concert. Young Musicians Room 2306 Under the direction of Debra Wallace, these 3rd - 5th graders are worship leaders. Children continue to develop their musical skills as we work toward our goal of enabling them to follow a musical score as they reach Middle School Choir. In , we will represent Providence at the annual Metropolitan Music Ministries service on September 25th. We lead in worship at least once a semester, and participate in Hanging of the Green, Palm Sunday, Children s Day, and the End of Year Concert. We also attend the Raise a Song children s choir festival in the spring at Camp Caraway. Karen Wright Debra Wallace Children s Bells (4th - 5th Grades) Room 2217 Please contact Debra Wallace to enroll your child in this group! 6

CHILDREN S MINISTRY Faith Formation for Children It is time to begin a new year of Christian education. Providence offers many opportunities for children to grow in their faith. Each Sunday we offer age-graded classes for Bible study for children. In these groups, children begin learning basic theological concepts and familiar Bible stories. Through Bible learning activities, children are guided to love and follow Jesus. On Wednesday evenings from 5:45pm until 6:30pm, children have the opportunity to learn through music. We believe that learning to sing our faith is vital to a child s spiritual development. Beginning at age two, children are invited to be a part of a group that sings and learns musical concepts. Children begin by learning familiar songs like Jesus Loves Me and God is so Good. As they grow, they learn hymns, and classical songs and anthems. Also on Wednesdays from 6:30pm until 7:15 pm, children explore missions in our world through: Mission Friends (ages 3, 4, and 5), Girls in Action (Grades 1-5) and Royal Ambassadors (Grades 1-5). Through these programs, children learn to give, pray for and support missionaries as they do God s work around the world. Through participating each week in these three programs, children learn to extend their arms around the world. As Christ s followers, we are called to reach out in grace and share God s love with all peoples. Beyond these programs, children learn faith at home from their parents. The modeling and teaching of parents is powerful as children receive a strong foundation of faith.
