2 ON THE COVER Agrarian Leader Zapata, Diego Rivera, 1931 n 1931 Museum of Modern Art brought Diego Rivera New York work on a series of murals. The paintings addressed mes of Mexican class race inequality, slavery, revolution. What resulted was a sixweek exhibition of record attendance for MoMa. During show, Rivera, with much attention from press, worked on an additional three murals with subject matter that dealt with localized class inequality in New York. On our cover day we see just a fragment of Rivera's MoMa exhibition; Zapata, a Moseslike leader for poor, is shown trampling a conquistador underfoot ( underhoof), which represents reversal of power from elites oppressed people of Mexico. REFLECTONS "The God of Old Testament is arguably most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving controlfreak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser, a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidial, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully." Richard Dawkins, The God Delusion "Perhaps you are one of those people, like me, who grew up thinking about Old Testament as a book filled with wrath judgment, doom gloom, atrocity injustice. To make matters worse, New Testament appeared be product of hippie movement of 1970s, promoting peace, mercy, brorly love. Such a dichomy, however, could not be furr from truth. The Old New Testaments are united in ir affirmation that God of Bible is a merciful compassionate God. n fact, it would not be inappropriate characterize entire Bible as a book that journals God s mercy compassion." Miles Van Pelt 2 "There are two ways live. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The or is as though everything is a miracle." Albert Einstein

16 UPCOMNG SERES LVNG NBETWEEN Exodus is sry of God s liberation of his people from slavery in Egypt of his selfrevelation m in desert as he prepares m for l he promised. t is more than a sry of national identity or a sry about anor people in anor time. This is our sry, a sry of redemption, because as it describes what it is like move from bondage in freedom what it is like dwell somewhere in between. n Jesus, we are invited from bondage in freedom, but in following him, we often have learn how live in between. Our study of Exodus coincides with church s liturgical seasons of Epiphany Lent, both of which follow a similar pattern Exodus sry.
