Ever since Jesus had turned toward Jerusalem he had been trying to prepare his disciples for all that was to come, but they refused to see his point. When James and John petitioned Jesus to do anything they asked, he made them spell out their shameless ambition before informing them that prestige was not his to distribute. When Jesus asked Bartimaeus what he wanted from him, Bartimaeus responded without hesitation, Master, I want to see. Bartimaeus wanted precisely what the disciples were avoiding: to see things clearly. His was the request Jesus had longed to grant and one that he could grant only to someone who had the faith and courage to ask for it. Mark tells us that instead of touching his eyes or laying his hands on him, Jesus simply told Bartimaeus to go his way because his faith had saved him and that he immediately received his sight. With that, Bartimaeus determined that Jesus way would now be his and he began to follow him on the way. Mary M. 4 Music Coordinator Needed We are looking for a new part-time Music Coordinator and would like your help in spreading the word. Tailgating Party November 3, :00 pm in the Parish Hall The successful candidate will provide music for weekend Masses and for other church celebrations. The applicant will have knowledge and commitment to the mission of the parish and the Catholic Church, along with being proficient in his or her performance area. This candidate will serve on the Parish Liturgy Committee. We are looking for 10 spirited teams this year! It doesn t matter if you re a Duck or a Beaver Fan or if you re a Timbers or Trailblazer fan, sign up for your favorite team. You can decorate your table if you choose, but it s not required, then serve you re favorite tailgating food. Flyers are by each door of the church with an entry form. Also we will be featuring the Wine Wall as well as a Beer Wall so start shopping for Wine ($15 value) and Beer ($4) to donate for this event. We will have our fabulous Raffle Baskets once again, so consider donating a Raffle Basket. This year we want to feature more themed dinners to buy. Please consider donating a dinner. CYRIL WOMEN S FIRST SATURDAY November 3, :30 am-11:30 am Parish Hall SPEAKER: LINDA SHOWMAN TOPIC: BIBLICAL ROOTS OF RESTORATIVE JUSTICE ABOUT OUR SPEAKER It will be thought-provoking, moving and challenging, and an excellent way to begin exploring restorative justice from a Christian perspective, as Pope Francis is asking of the Church. Jesus lived on earth as one of us to proclaim the Kingdom of God. Through Eucharistic grace Jesus lives on in the Church. Pope Francis echoes Jesus mandate when he calls us to make compassion, love, mercy and solidarity a true way of life. How then do we respond to criminal and harmful acts in a just world? The bishops of the United States resonate with a call for restorative justice in addressing the needs of the victims, of the community and those responsible for causing harm-linda Showman This Restorative Justice seeks to provide a framework for thinking about crime and justice with a Christian lens that focuses on respect for all and on right relationship by encouraging outcomes that promote healing fr all. Linda will be addressing: Restorative Justice and its connection to scripture and church teaching. She is the Project Consultant for the Office of Prison Ministry in the Archdiocese of Portland. She is retired from the faculty of Mount Angel Seminary. 6 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION AND YOUTH MINISTRY HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH GROUP We are gathering each week of the school year after the 10:30 Mass in room 116. The new youth group leaders Katy and Joe Church are inspiring and fun. They do many activities as a large group, but also break into small groups for discussions on many faith topics. One of our resources is the Decision Point workbook by Mathew Kelly which is a springboard for our discussions and activities. Matthew Kelly is a world famous author and speaker on the topic of revitalizing our Catholic faith! His enthusiasm is contagious. Our group leaders certainly are also enthusiastic Catholics who relate well to our class. We are lucky they stepped forward to volunteer for our youth! THE HOLY ROSARY October is the month we celebrate the Holy Rosary. Parents and their children are encouraged to pray a decade of the Rosary each night of the school week this month. There are four categories of mysteries listed below, so choose a different one each week and then by the end of the month you will have prayed the entire Rosary as a family. Sub Tuum Praesidium We turn to you for protection, holy Mother of God. Listen to our prayers and help us in our needs. Save us from every danger, glorious and blessed Virgin. Amen Update on the Youth Synod As parents and teachers we need to make an effort to meet the youth where they are and to truly listen to what they are concerned about. Besides making real connections with our youth, we need to teach them about the faith and how to live that faith in the world today. They need specific example from our lives where we are modeling the Gospel values of Jesus. Listening is important but so is teaching with authority and accuracy. Parents need to take the time to educate themselves on church doctrine and share it with their children every day. In his small group discussion Bishop Robert Barron became the spokesman for sharing what the group had discussed and this need for knowing and sharing the faith in response to the questions youth have about the church was a key point. Called to Protect This week in our elementary classes kindergarten through fifth grade our children are learning about safety here at church, at school and at sports and clubs. The lessons are age appropriate and required by the Archdiocese of Portland. October 28, 2018 Page 6

7 Your continuous support to St Cyril Parish is greatly appreciated. Gobble! Gobble! We started advertising on September 30 th for our FREE Thanksgiving Day dinner. Soon we will advertise for volunteers for a variety of tasks that occur on Wednesday and Thursday before Thanksgiving. On Wednesday, Joannie Kruse will coordinate volunteers to wash, chop, mix, and assemble the sausage dressing, potatoes, brussels sprouts, which will be cooked the next day. She also assigns volunteers to clean all the serving ware and place settings that will be used the next day. Later that evening, my kitchen volunteers will clean, split, and season the turkeys, prepare cranberries, and setup workflow for the next day, while others will prepare the dining room for many guests. Phew! It s not even Thanksgiving! Of course, we need to know if you can help with any of these tasks, large or small. We even want to know if you will be dining with us! Stay tuned for sign-up sheets for volunteers and diners; these will be at each door of church on Oct , Nov. 3-4, and Nov If you or someone you know, will be without family or don t have the space or resources, to enjoy a Thanksgiving meal at home, please let them know what we offer.
