We hope that this guide will assist you in following our service and in making prayers and responses. Please maintain silence before the service in order to prayerfully prepare for worship. The First Reading Deuteronomy 6:1-9 Moses convened all Israel and said to them: Now this is the commandment the statutes and the ordinances that the Lord your God charged me to teach you to observe in the land that you are about to cross into and occupy, so that you and your children and your children s children, may fear the Lord your God all the days of your life, and keep all his decrees and his commandments that I am commanding you, so that your days may be long. Hear therefore, O Israel, and observe them diligently, so that it may go well with you, and so that you may multiply greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey, as the Lord, the God of your ancestors, has promised you. Hear, O Israel: The Lord is our God, the Lord alone. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might. Keep these words that I am commanding you today in your heart. Recite them to your children and talk about them when you are at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when you rise. Bind them as a sign on your hand, fix them as an emblem on your forehead, and write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. The Second Reading Hebrews 9:11-14 When Christ came as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation), he entered once for all into the Holy Place, not with the blood of goats and calves, but with his own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption. For if the blood of goats and bulls, with the sprinkling of the ashes of a heifer, sanctifies those who have been defiled so that their flesh is purified, how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to worship the living God! Introduction to the Gospel (standing) Mark 12:28-34 Deacon: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. Glory be to thee, O Lord One of the scribes came near and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that Jesus answered them well, he asked him, Which commandment is the first of all? Jesus answered, The first is, Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second is this, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these. Then the scribe said to him, You are right, Teacher; you have truly said that he is one, and besides him there is no other ; and to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the strength, and to love one s neighbor as oneself, this is much more important than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices. When Jesus saw that he answered wisely, he said to him, You are not far from the kingdom of God. After that no one dared to ask him any question. Deacon: The Gospel of the Lord. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. The Prayer of Humble Access (kneeling or standing) We do not presume to come to this thy Table, O merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in thy manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under thy Table. But thou art the same Lord whose property is always to have mercy. Grant us therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of thy dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen. Commitment Sunday and The Welcome Table Today, November 4 th is our Commitment Sunday, a day when we prayerfully make our financial commitment to God s work through this church for the coming year. Please prayerfully reflect on what God is calling you to give. Join us later this afternoon for a celebratory potluck dinner and a free bluegrass concert with Wild Magnolia at 5pm. Bring the kids early at 4pm for a pony ride! Acolyte Training for new Acolytes!!! At the Children s Prayer Breakfast, Father Kevin talked to the kids about serving on the altar. We are going to start the training process today, November 4 th and on Sunday, November 18 th, following the 10:30am service, each training will be about 30 mins. and will be a brief introduction to being an acolyte. We would like all children that are not already acolytes in 3rd grade or higher to attend the training.

9 Walk in Love Book Discussion Want to strengthen your understanding of your faith and what the Episcopal Church believes? Join us as we read and reflect on Walk In Love: Episcopal Beliefs and Practices by Scott Gunn and Melody Wilson Shobe. We will be meeting at 9am on Nov 11, Dec 16, Jan 13, Feb 10. Gingerbread House Decorating!! Mark your calendars for our gingerbread house decorating on Saturday, November 24 th at 11am!! It is a great way to kick off the holiday season with fun for all ages!! You can get as creative as you want and are welcome to bring any additional props, candy (save your extra Halloween candy), or anything else to add to your house. The cost of this event is $35 per house and will include the house, frosting, candy and lunch. This is open to all parishioners of all ages and please feel free to bring along your family and friends. Please sign up by Sunday, November 18th. Friendship Fair 2019 Save the Date It s hard to believe that our parish will be gathering together for another Friendship Fair in less than a year! Friendship Fair 2019 will be held on Friday and Saturday, October 18 th and 19 th, As we begin our preparations for the Fair, we ask that everyone mark their calendars and start to think about how you can help make our next Fair the best yet. More details are forthcoming, but in the interim please feel free to share any ideas or suggestions with our Fair Committee: Geoff and Judi Broadhurst, Pam Heywood and Peter Carbonaro. Don t Forget to Shop at The Shop The holidays are fast approaching and The Shop at Ascension offers a unique showcase of gifts, vintage items, crafts, antiques, china and seasonal decor. The shop is open on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 11am to 5pm. The shop is staffed by volunteers and all proceeds benefit the church. 10:30 Coffee Hour November-December Needs Your Help Please sign up in the parish hall to help serve and clean up coffee hour after the 10:30 service. Thank you to Nate Green for making the coffee each week. Joan Hughes will set up the coffee hours in November and December. Everyone who enjoys the coffee and snacks after church is invited to help with clean up. Realm Online Parish Directory It is important to remember to keep your Realm directory profile up to date. We also use Realm to make up the weekly parish birthday lists which are used in preparing the bulletins.
