Each year the expense for our Christmas décor and music ministry is offset by your generous donations to the Christmas Flower Fund. Special offering envelopes are at the exits of the church. 6 An encouraging survey in Canada found that far more people prefer to give gifts 87 percent than receive them a mere 13 percent. It good to know the holiday spirit is alive and well at least in Canada, eh? People are so worried about what they eat between Christmas and New Year, but what they really should be worried about is what they eat between New Year and Christmas! A little girl thanked her grandfather for the violin he gave her for Christmas. It s the best gift I ve ever gotten! she exclaimed. Really? her surprised grandfather asked. Oh yes, she said. Because every time I start playing, Dad gives me two dollars to stop. A Fortuitous Mistake You ve probably seen NORAD S Tracking System on Christmas Eve. Every Year, to the delight of boys and girls everywhere, the North American Aerospace Defense Command issues reports on where Santa s sleigh is located. But the tradition may have never started had it not been for one misdialed phone number. According to legend, Sears Department Store printed an ad in 1955 telling kids they could call Santa on his private phone line. But the number was misprinted and a six-year-old trying to reach Santa ended up calling U.S. Air Force Colonel Harry Shoup, the director of operations at NORAD s predecessor, the Continental Air Defense Command. But instead of hanging up on the child, Shoup decided to play Santa. And when more kids began reaching the number, Shoup, with the help of his staff, started giving them whereabouts of Santa s sleigh. If you are really desparate for a Midnight Snack Did you know that Christmas trees are edible? Many parts of pine, spruce, and fir trees can be eaten, and the needles are a good source of Vitamin C. And pine nuts, which come from pine cones, are already popular for making pesto and even cookies! The History of Gingerbread Houses Ginger was first introduced to Europe in 1902 by an Armenian monk named Gregory of Nicopolis. The spice was originally used for religious purposes: bakers would add it to bread dough and knead it into a moldable paste, which was then carved into religious figures and painted with icing. Gingerbread was also thought to ease digestion and have other medicinal properties. It was so prized by European royalty that a gingerbread guild controlled the production of the product. After the Brothers Grimm published their famous story Hansel and Gretel, about two children who discover and evil witch s edible candy house in a forest, the creation of gingerbread houses became immensely poplular and a Christmas tradition was born.

7 Sunday, December 17, 2017 All Parish Mass: 11:00a.m. at the Monastery Event Center (the original Holy Cross Church) followed by a holiday catered lunch. Lunch is free but reservations are required by Dec. 11 at Noon. Please bring homemade Christmas cookies to share for dessert. Cookies are also needed for a reception for the musicians in the parish center after the concert. Please call the office if you can help. Guests are welcome. A $10 donation for the lunch is requested. PLEASE NOTE: No Saturday 4:30 or Sunday 8:00 Masses next weekend.
