Please read Page 5 of this Bulletin. Silence, noiseless, soundless, peaceful, still, tranquil, calm and serene. These are words that describe our quiet journey with our Lord during Lent. Remember to spend a few minutes each day reflecting on Jesus Lenten Journey. Also remember that each time we leave the church after celebrating the Mass, we do not have a dismissal song during Lent. This time is to be used for personal prayer and to leave in Silence. Please leave in Silence. As always you are in my prayers. God Bless You, FINANCIAL BLESSINGS Sunday s Collection March 3rd & 4th, 2018 Envelopes Checks Cash Online Giving Total Debt Reduction 243 $ 5, $ 2, $ 1, $ 9, $ 2, Thank you for responding with generosity to our financial needs. To give is an act of faith. We promise to be wise stewards with the funds that you entrust to us. God Bless You. LEGACY GIFTS Our Lord reminds us of the abundant blessings that come from a generous heart. Give and gifts will be given to you; a good measure, packed together, shaken down, and overflowing, will be poured into your lap. For the measure with which you measure will in return be measured out to you. When you give your time, talent and financial resources to our parish, it strengthens our faith community in so many wonderful ways! Did you know that there are also opportunities to make a legacy gift to Our Saint Jude Parish that will touch the lives of parishioners for generations to come? Please prayerfully consider remembering our parish in your will and estate plans. For more information, call our Parish at , ext.13 for further assistance and to discuss options that might work for you. Thank you so much for all you do for Saint Jude Church -- now and in the future! FLOWERS DURING LENT Please be advised that there will be NO FLOWERS ON DISPLAY in the Church during Lent. The Season of Lent is compared to the desert; dryness and barrenness without any plants.

3 OPPORTUNITIES FOR INCREASED SPIRITUAL GROWTH DURING OUR LENTEN SEASON GOOD FRIDAY - OBLIGATORY FAST AND ABSTINENCE Good Friday is a day of obligatory fast and abstinence. Abstinence from meat is to be observed by all who are 14 years of age and older every Friday in Lent. Fasting is to be observed on Good Friday by all who are 18 years of age but not yet 59. Those who are bound by this may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted if necessary to maintain strength according to one s needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. STATIONS OF THE CROSS Praying the Stations of the Cross is part of the Catholic tradition of devotional prayer. To pray the Way of the Cross requires only that you meditate on the Passion of the Lord before each Station. Stations of the Cross began Friday, February 16th at 7:00PM in the church and thereafter every Friday evening throughout Lent. WELCOME HOME TO HEALING Welcome Home is a diocesan initiative to invite all Catholics to experience the grace of the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Confession is a wonderful opportunity to set aside our sinful ways and to draw closer to our Lord. Confessions will be held every Monday during Lent, February 19th through March 26th from 7:00PM-8:30PM in every Catholic Church in the Diocese of Paterson. SILENCE THROUGHOUT LENT Just a reminder that beginning with Ash Wednesday liturgies February 14th all liturgies through Lent will conclude in silence instead of a closing song. This provides a new way to experience prayer in our lives, and respect for those around us who may wish to remain after liturgy in silent prayer. Therefore, we strive to remain silent until we exit our worship space. OPERATION RICE BOWL As part of our community's observance of Lent, we ask all families to participate in Catholic Relief Services' Operation Rice Bowl, a program of prayer, fasting, learning, and giving. Please be sure to take home a Rice Bowl packet and follow this simple yet powerful Lenten practice. Packets are available in the church vestibule. Visit for more information. BEST LENT EVER 2018 Sign up for Best Lent Ever, a FREE, video-based program featuring internationally acclaimed speaker and New York Times bestselling author Matthew Kelly. From Ash Wednesday to Easter Sunday, Matthew will help you identify what stands between you and happiness...and what to do about it. Are you ready for your best Lent ever? Sign up at PENANCE SERVICE The Lenten Penance Service at St. Jude Church will be held on Monday evening, March 19th at 7:00 PM. All are invited to experience the beauty of God s forgiveness through song, prayer, and reflection. FISH AND CHIPS DINNER REMINDER The Annual Fish and Chips dinner is Tuesday, March 20th, Tickets are available after all Masses or by calling the Rectory Office. Catholic Family supports clients in their personal struggles to enhance their quality of life. Thank you again! During this period that we are abstaining from the cup due to the wide outbreak of the flu, it is an excellent time for us to reflect on how we are receiving the presence of Jesus, Himself into our bodies. Bishop has suggested the receiving of the Eucharist in the hand is the most sanitary way to accept God in the Eucharist. To receive in the hand, hold your hands out flat, one above the other, with palms facing up, then take one step to the side and consume the host while standing still, not walking away. One never puts the host in their mouth immediately from the flat, open palm. When receiving, do not try to take it. Be still and passively receive the host. After the minister says the Body of Christ reply Amen which means I believe. After receiving, direct your attention to Jesus within you, rather than His presence in the distant tabernacle, or the empty altar or the symbolic crucifix. 5 Silence: The Path to Peace From Bishop Serratelli In 2011, the World Health Organization issued a report on the adverse effects of environmental noise on health. We are constantly surrounded by noise. Airplanes overhead. Buses, cars and trucks on our highways. The roar of subways in our cities. Police and fire sirens. We are bombarded on every side by a cacophony of noise. And, then there are those sounds that we inflict on ourselves: ipods plugged into the ears, radios blasting music in our cars, televisions broadcasting controversy and conflict in our homes. Noise pollution is a modern plague that affects the health of each of us. Both children and adults suffer from chronic noise. For decades, psychologists have been telling us that continual noise impairs a child s health. It hinders mental development. Those children whose homes or schools are near airports or busy trains stations develop their cognitive skills at a much slower pace than those children in a more serene environment. Adults also suffer from a barrage of sounds. Those immersed in constant loud noises are at risk for high blood pressure, heart attacks, sleepless nights and hearing loss. Researchers claim that noise pollution triggers the release of the stress hormone cortisol from the cortex of the adrenal glands into the blood. This adversely affects a person s general health. Already in the 19th century, the famous British nurse Florence Nightingale remarked, Unnecessary noise is the most cruel abuse of care which can be inflicted on either the sick or the well. Our culture places us in a hotbed of noise, conflicting opinions, and the constant din of information. We are fired on from every side with the demand to listen and pay attention. And, in the end, we are stretched and our ability to concentrate for longer periods of time and think things through is diminished, if not destroyed. Whereas research shows that noise raises our stress level and makes us tense, research also demonstrates silence puts us at ease, reduces stress and promotes general well-being. Herman Melville once wrote, All profound things are preceded and attended by silence. When we disengage our brain from external sensory stimuli and place ourselves in silence, we can actually pay attention to our own thoughts and ideas, our feelings and emotions. With such quiet reflection, we can go beyond the surface of the events of our lives and discover meaning and experience peace. In the desert, Moses, fleeing in exile for having murdered an Egyptian, came upon the burning bush. Only when he stopped and stood in wonder before it did God speak to him. It was in that reflective silence, he encountered God (Ex 3:3). The prophet Elijah, fleeing from King Ahab and his wife Jezebel, came to the same mountain where Moses had encountered God. He took shelter in a cave. There was a strong and violent wind splitting the mountain into pieces, but God was not in the wind. There was a thunderous earthquake, but God was not in the earthquake. Rather, in the gentle, soft, barely audible whisper, God was present. In the sound of silence, when Elijah s soul was calm and his mind attentive, he heard God reveal to him what God wanted him to do (1 Kgs 19:11-12). Jesus made silence a priority in his life. After the Father anointed Jesus with the Holy Spirit in his baptism, Jesus did not rush to begin his public ministry. Rather, he went into the solitude of the Judean desert to pray (Mk 1:12). Throughout his short public ministry, he would not be hurried into action. Prior to every major decision, Jesus set aside time to be silent in prayer before the Father. Before choosing the twelve apostles, he spent the entire night in prayer on the side of a mountain (Lk 6:12). After the multiplication of the loaves and fishes, when the crowds clamored to crown Christ king, he went up on a mountain to pray by himself (Mt 14:23; Jn 6:15). In the last hours of his life, after the Last Supper, he went to the Garden of Gethsemane to pray alone in silence (Mk 14:32). Jesus has set the example for all of us. If he, in his humanity untainted by sin, needed moments of silence to think, reflect and, most importantly to pray, how much more do we! Silence does not come easily to us. We need to discipline ourselves, learn to place a pause in our busy, noise-filled lives and make meaning of our lives. This is at the heart of what it means to be truly human and the way to be filled with the presence of God. In the words of Herman Melville, silence is the invisible laying on of the Divine Pontiff s hands upon the world. Silence releases us from the tyranny of noise. It is not a negative. It is a positive. It is not emptiness and nothingness. It is the openness and receptivity before God. As Christopher Jamison so beautifully says, Silence is a gateway to the soul, and the soul is the gateway to God. It is the path to peace.
