3 From the Chaplain Lent culminates with Holy Week, or as it was anciently known The Great Week. From Palm Sunday to the Easter Vigil, the services take us through the most important seven days in the history of our redemption. Indeed, the liturgies themselves are designed to make us feel as if we are present as that divine drama is played out. They include some of the most venerable customs of the church, dating back mainly to fourth and fifth century Jerusalem, and to the liturgical practice of the great church of the Holy Sepulchre in that city. With its unique place in Christendom, Holy Week re-enacted Christ s journey to the Cross, the tomb and glory in the very place it happened. We begin on Palm Sunday, in Clock Court waving our palm branches, made into crosses, as the choir sings the antiphon reminding us how the Children of the Hebrews did the same. We hear the Passion, according to S. Matthew, which prepares us for what comes later in the week. Maundy Thursday, is so named, because of Christ s new commandment; to love one another as he loves us. Traditionally, those in high authority would wash the feet of the poor, and indeed in many churches this is still part of the liturgy. But Maundy Thursday has another commandment: Do this in remembrance of me. It is the day that the Passover of the Old Covenant looks forward to that of the New, offered once for all on the cross, and ever since, in the Eucharist. Good Friday is the day of our salvation. Solemn in tone, with the chapel stripped bare, it brings us to the foot of the cross, which is then unveiled. The mother of Constantine, S. Helen, is said to have discovered the True Cross, and when the words Behold the Wood of the Cross were sung in Jerusalem, it was that which was held up for the faithful to see. And last, but by no means least, on Holy Saturday we have the Great Easter Vigil, when the new fire is lit and blessed and the darkness is overcome by light, signifying the death of death. The Easter, or Paschal Candle represents the risen Christ himself. These are moving services, and will be accompanied by equally moving music. Please do try to make time to be with the Lord this Holy Week. Yours in Dño, Anthony Howe 3
4 Sunday 6th March am Holy Communion The Fourth Sunday in Lent Mothering Sunday am Choral Eucharist (Boys voices) The congregation is encouraged to join in the Nicene Creed and sung responses. Hymn 396 Let saints on earth in concert sing Setting Missa Brevis Wills Epistle Galatians 4: Gradual Hymn 161 For Mary, Mother of the Lord Gospel John 6: 1-14 The Nicene Creed NEH page 562 Sermon Offertory Hymn 62 Ah, holy Jesu Motet Prayer for a new mother Shephard Hymn 369 Happy are they Voluntary (L Thain) Fanfare (Four Extemporisations) Whitlock Prayer for a new mother Richard Shephard (b. 1949) The things she knew let her forget again: the voices in the sky, the fear, the cold, the gaping shepherds and the strange old men, piling their clumsy gifts of foreign gold. Let her have laughter with her little one. Teach her the endless tuneless songs to sing. Grant her the right to whisper to her son the foolish things one dare not call a king. Keep from her dreams the rumble of a crowd, the smell of rough-cut wood, the trail of red, the thick and chilly whiteness of the shroud that wraps the strange new body of the dead. Ah, let her go, kind Lord, where mothers go, and boast his pretty words and ways, and plan the proud and happy years that they shall know together when her son is grown a man. 4

In our Father, God Almighty, we have our being; In our merciful Mother we are remade and restored. Our fragmented lives are knit together. And by giving and yielding ourselves, through grace, To the Holy Spirit we are made whole. It is I, the strength and goodness of Fatherhood. It is I, the wisdom of Motherhood. It is I, the light and grace of holy love. It is I, the Trinity. I am the sovereign goodness in all things. It is I who teach you to love. It is I who teach you to desire. It is I who am the reward of all true desiring. All shall be well, and all manner of thing shall be well. Amen. [Julian of Norwich, b. 1342] 5

I cannot pray alone. In me there is darkness, but with Thee there is light. I am lonely, but Thou leavest me not. I am feeble in heart, but Thou leavest me not. I am restless, but with Thee there is peace. In me there is bitterness, but with Thee there is patience; Thy ways are past understanding, but thou knowest the way for me. O heavenly Father I praise and thank Thee for the peace of the night. I praise and thank Thee for this new day. I praise and thank Thee for all thy goodness and faithfulness throughout my life. Thou hast granted me many blessings; now let me accept tribulation from thy hand. Thou will not lay on me more than I can bear. Thou makest all things work together for good for thy children. Lord Jesus Christ Thou wast poor and in misery, a captive foresaken as I am. Thou knowest all man s distress: thou abidest with me when all others have deserted me; Thou dost not forget me but seekest me, thou willest that I should know thee and turn unto thee. Lord I hear Thy call and follow Thee; do Thou help me. Chiefly do I remember all my loved ones, my fellow prisoners, and all who have performed their hard service. Lord have mercy, restore me to liberty, and enable me so to live now, that I may answer before Thee, and before the world. Lord, whatever this day may bring, thy name be praised. [Three prayers of Dietrich Bonhoeffer] 6

9 Vexilla Regis Vexilla Regis prodeunt: Fulget Crucis mysterium, Quo carne carnis Conditor Suspensus est patibulo. Impleta sunt quæ concinit David fidelis carmine, Dicendo nationibus Regnavit a ligno Deus. Te summa Deus Trinitas Collaudet omnis spiritus: Quos per Crucis mysterium Salva, rege per sæcula. Amen. The royal banners forward go; The Cross shines forth in mystic glow; Where he in flesh, our flesh who made, Our sentence bore, our ransom paid. Amidst the nations, God, saith he, Hath reigned and triumphed from the tree. Fulfilled is all that David told In true prophetic song of old; To thee, eternal Three in One, Let homage meet by all be done: Whom by the Cross thou dost restore, Preserve and govern evermore. Amen. [Venantius Fortunatus , Bishop of Poitiers; translation by John Mason Neale ] Hosanna to the son of David Orlando Gibbons ( ) Hosanna to the Son of David: blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord. Blessed be the King of Israel; blessed be the Kingdom that cometh in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest places; Hosanna in the highest heavens. [Matthew 21: 9, Mark 11: 10, Luke 19: 38] Pueri Hebraeorum Tomás Luis de Victoria (c ) Pueri Hebraeorum, vestimenta prosternebant in via, et clamabant dicentes : Hosanna, Filio David : benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini. The children of the Hebrews spread their garments in the way, and cried out, saying : Hosanna to the Son of David : blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord. 9
10 Drop, drop slow tears Brian Chapple (b. 1945) Drop, drop, slow tears and bathe those beauteous feet, Which brought from heaven the news and Prince of Peace: Cease not wet eyes, his mercies to entreat; To cry for vengeance sin doth never cease; In your deep floods, drown all my faults and fears; Nor let his eye see sin, but through my tears Ave verum corpus Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart ( ) Ave verum Corpus natum de Maria Virgine: vere passum, immolatum in cruce pro homine: cuius latus perforatum, unda fluxit aqua et sanguine: esto nobis prægustatum in mortis examine. All hail, true Body, born of the Virgin Mary, which truly suffered, sacrificed on the cross for man, from whose pierced side flowed a stream of water and blood: be unto us, who have received thee now, our vindication at our death. [Anonymous 14th century Eucharistic hymn] Solus ad victimam Kenneth Leighton ( ) Alone to sacrifice thou goest, Lord, giving thyself to Death whom thou hast slain. For us thy wretched folk is any word? Who know that for our sins this is thy pain? For they are ours, O Lord, our deeds, our deeds. Why must thou suffer torture for our sin? Let our hearts suffer in thy Passion, Lord, that very suffering may thy mercy win. This is the night of tears, the three days space, sorrow abiding of the eventide, Until the day break with the risen Christ, and hearts that sorrowed shall be satisfied. So may our hearts share in thine anguish, Lord, that they may sharers of thy glory be; Heavy with weeping may the three days pass, to win the laughter of thine Easter Day. [Peter Abelard ( ), trans. Helen Waddell] 10
Aleph: How doth the city sit solitary, that was full of people! How is she become as a widow! she that was great among the nations, and princess among the provinces, how is she become tributary! Beth: She hath wept sore in the night, and her tears are on her cheeks : among all her lovers she hath none to comfort her : all her friends have dealt treacherously with her, they are become her enemies. O Jerusalem, turn to the Lord thy God! [Lamentations of Jeremiah 1: 1-2] Were you there? Richard Lloyd (b. 1933) Were you there when they crucified my Lord? Oh sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble! Were you there when they crucified my Lord? Were you there when they nailed him to the tree? Oh sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble! Were you there when they nailed him to the tree? Were you there when they laid him in the tomb? Oh sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble! Were you there when they laid him in the tomb? Were you there when they rolled the stone away? Oh sometimes it causes me to tremble! Were you there? Were you there when they crucified my Lord? [Spiritual] 11

But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation. Pass the time of your sojourning here in fear. See that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently. Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God. For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away: But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. Amen. [1 Peter 1] 13
