Grant to us, Lord, we pray, the spirit to think and do always those things that are right, that we, who cannot exist without you, may by you be enabled to live according to your will; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. The Lessons All are seated. Meditative silence follows the readings. Reading: Genesis 32:22-31 Lector Jacob settled in the land where his father had lived as an alien, the land of Canaan. This is the story of the family of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was shepherding the flock with his brothers; he was a helper to the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah, his father s wives; and Joseph brought a bad report of them to their father. Now Israel loved Joseph more than any other of his children, because he was the son of his old age; and he had made him a long robe with sleeves. But when his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably to him. Now his brothers went to pasture their father s flock near Shechem. And Israel said to Joseph, Are not your brothers pasturing the flock at Shechem? Come, I will send you to them. He answered, Here I am. So he said to him, Go now, see if it is well with your brothers and with the flock; and bring word back to me. So he sent him from the valley of Hebron. He came to Shechem, and a man found him wandering in the fields; the man asked him, What are you seeking? I am seeking my brothers, he said; tell me, please, where they are pasturing the flock. The man said, They have gone away, for I heard them say, Let us go to Dothan. So Joseph went after his page 2

3 People brothers, and found them at Dothan. They saw him from a distance, and before he came near to them, they conspired to kill him. They said to one another, Here comes this dreamer. Come now, let us kill him and throw him into one of the pits; then we shall say that a wild animal has devoured him, and we shall see what will become of his dreams. But when Reuben heard it, he delivered him out of their hands, saying, Let us not take his life. Reuben said to them, Shed no blood; throw him into this pit here in the wilderness, but lay no hand on him that he might rescue him out of their hand and restore him to his father. So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe, the long robe with sleeves that he wore; and they took him and threw him into a pit. The pit was empty; there was no water in it. Then they sat down to eat; and looking up they saw a caravan of Ishmaelites coming from Gilead, with their camels carrying gum, balm, and resin, on their way to carry it down to Egypt. Then Judah said to his brothers, What profit is it if we kill our brother and conceal his blood? Come, let us sell him to the Ishmaelites, and not lay our hands on him, for he is our brother, our own flesh. And his brothers agreed. When some Midianite traders passed by, they drew Joseph up, lifting him out of the pit, and sold him to the Ishmaelites for twenty pieces of silver. And they took Joseph to Egypt. They bruised his feet in fetters; * his neck they put in an iron collar. Until his prediction came to pass, * the word of the Lord tested him. The king sent and re leased him; * the ruler of the peoples set him free. He set him as a master over his household,* as a ruler over all his possessions, To instruct his princes according to his will* and to teach his elders wisdom. Hallelujah! 4 The Holy Gospel: Matthew 14:22-33 Presider The Holy Gospel of our Savior Jesus Christ according to Matthew. People Glory to you, Lord Christ. Presider Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, but by this time the boat, battered by the waves, was far from the land, for the wind was against them. And early in the morning he came walking toward them on the sea. But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, saying, It is a ghost! And they cried out in fear. But immediately Jesus spoke to them and said, Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid. Peter answered him, Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water. He said, Come. So Peter got out of the boat, started walking on the water, and came toward Jesus. But when he noticed the strong wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, Lord, save me! Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, You of little faith, why did you doubt? When they got into the boat, the wind ceased. And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, Truly you are the Son of God. The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ. Meditation All are seated. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. To deliver us from the power of sin and death and to reveal the riches of your grace, you looked with favor upon Mary, your willing servant, that she might conceive and bear a son, Jesus the holy child of God. Living among us, Jesus loved us. He broke bread with outcasts and sinners, healed the sick, and proclaimed good news to the poor. He yearned to draw all the world to himself yet we were heedless of his call to walk in love. Then, the time came for him to complete upon the cross the sacrifice of his life, and to be glorified by you. On the night before he died for us, Jesus was at table with his friends. He took bread, gave thanks to you, broke it, and gave it to them, and said: Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. As supper was ending, Jesus took the cup of wine. Now gathered at your table, O God of all creation, and remembering Christ, crucified and risen, who was and is and is to come, we offer to you our gifts of bread and wine, and ourselves, a living sacrifice. Pour out your Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Body and Blood of Christ. Breathe your Spirit over the whole earth and make us your new creation, the Body of Christ given for the world you have made. In the fullness of time bring us, with all your saints, from every tribe and language and people and nation, to feast at the banquet prepared from the foundation of the world. To take communion receive the bread in your hands (for gluten-free bread cross your hands palms down). Drink the wine from the cup, or holding the bread in your hands, wait for the minister to dip the bread in the wine and place it on your tongue. Take Me Out to the Ballgame August 27 Kauffman Stadium Join other parishioners and invite friends to a Royals vs. Twins game Wednesday evening, August 27. We will start with a buffet picnic in the Plaza Party Porch area. Food includes unlimited cheeseburgers, hot dogs, mac & cheese, soft drinks, bottled water, chips and cookies. There will be a cash bar for other beverages. The picnic begins when the gates open at 5:30. Game time is 7:10 and our seats are the in upper level infield boxes. Total cost is $43 per person and we are limited to 36 seats in the picnic area. Checks should be made payable to the Royals or cash is accepted. Weekly Bible Studies Summer Sunday Bible Study: Sundays at 9:15 a.m. in the Common Room. Our Summer Bible Study series, led by Peter DeVeau & Christy Dorn, will focus on the Old Testament narratives. Childcare is provided in the nursery. Next Sunday, we explore the time Joseph revealed himself to his brothers (Genesis 45:1-15). Men s Bible Study: We meet Tuesday afternoons at 2:30 p.m. We meet for about an hour and usually read aloud a passage from the Bible and then have a spirited discussion of what we have read. Women s Bible Study: The Women s Bible Study is on a break during the month of August. The group will resume their normal time of Tuesday afternoons from 1:30 to 2:30 beginning in September. Help with the Art Exhibit Volunteers are needed for the Cathedral s art exhibit, which runs through September 5, to provide hospitality and to serve as greeters during special events. Artist Salon: August 14, 6-8 p.m. Closing Reception: September 5, 5-8 p.m. Volunteers are also welcome during exhibition hours: Thursday through Sunday.
