2 Five Key Habits Solitude Prayer Study and application of Scripture Accepting and responding to God s unconditional love Involvement in supportive relationships

3 If we want to lead like Jesus, we have to become like Jesus.

4 Practicing Solitude Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed. Mark 1:35

5 Experiencing Prayer One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of His disciples said to him, Lord teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples. Luke 11:1

6 Applying Scripture All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that a man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17

7 Abiding in God s Unconditional Love A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another. John 13:35-35

8 Maintaining Supportive Relationships Wounds from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses. Proverbs 27:6

9 The HABITS Daily disciplines to keep focused on leading like Jesus.

10 Practicing Solitude Be still and know that I am God. Psalm 46:10 Solitude defined: Being out of human contact, being along, and being so for lengthy periods of time. To get out of human contact is not something that can be done for a short while, for the contact lingers long after it is, in one sense, over.

11 A Call to Solitude Jesus modeled for us the spiritual discipline of solitude as an essential habit for spiritual renewal.

12 Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest. So they went away by themselves in a boat to a solitary place. Mark 6:31-32

13 At daybreak Jesus went out to a solitary place. The people were looking for him and when they came to where he was, they tried to keep him from leaving. Luke 4:42

15 Experiencing Prayer Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understand, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7

16 ...when I pray, that there really is someone listening who cares about me and wants to know what is on my mind....when I pray, it changes me and my view of how the universe operates, and who s involved.

17 ...I put my doubts aside for a minute and consider the possibility that someone knew me before I was born loves me, warts and all, without condition or reservation, no matter how badly I ve behaved in the past....a prayer was my first response instead of my last resort when facing a new challenge or and old temptation.

18 ... I lived each day, knowing that there is an inexhaustible supply of love for me to pass on to others.

20 Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. Mark 11:24 Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Romans 12:12

21 When preparing for the tests of leadership and public ministry, He spent forty days alone in the desert. Matthew 4:1-11 Before He chose the twelve, He spent the entire night alone in the desert hills. Luke 6:12 When He received the news of John the Baptist s death, He withdrew from there in a boat to a lonely place apart. Matthew 14:13

22 Jesus Prayer in Gethsemane Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, Sit here while I go over there and pray. He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. Then he said to them, My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me. Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will. Matthew 26:36-39

23 Lets look at four instructive aspects of His prayer. What did Jesus pray and why? What was Jesus posture in prayer? What did Jesus ask in prayer? What was the answer to Jesus prayer?

24 ACTS Method of Prayer A-Adoration- all prayers should begin by telling the Lord that you love Him Yours, Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is yours. Yours, Lord, is the kingdom; you are exalted as head over all. 1 Chronicles 29:11 C- Confession Immediately when we come into the presence of a holy God, we sense our inadequacies. Therefore, our first response to meeting and adoring God is confession. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9 T- Thanksgiving- Thanksgiving is the heartfelt expression of gratitude to God. Speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Ephesians 5:19-20 S- Supplication is asking what we need Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. Matthew 7:7
