Bill grew up in a small town of Missouri with a large family of ten siblings. He joined the Vincentians as a high school seminarian and was ordained a Priest of the Congregation of the Mission of St. Vincent de Paul in He served as a Pastor in Mandarin speaking parishes in Taiwan for nearly 8 years as a missionary. After returning to the United States in 1987, Fr. Bill s next 20 years included assignments as Pastor in several parishes and missions within the Pueblo, Colorado and Colorado Springs dioceses. More recently, he served as Pastor in rural parishes of Missouri, and now enjoys extensive parish connections through the Vincentian Parish Mission Apostolate. ROSE OF LIMA PARISH Page 3 Fourth Sunday of Lent CHILDREN OF THE LIGHT The future king, David, in today s first reading, is an example of a type of character present throughout the Hebrew scriptures. He is the child born out of place (not the eldest or most favored) who ends up receiving the promise of the covenant. The spirit of God s anointing rushes upon him. In this way, he is similar to the man born blind from today s Gospel. David s family and the blind man s community did not expect the miraculous grace of God s love to work through them. Perhaps they, too, were blinded by the expectations and assumptions of those around them. Yet, after being touched by God, they both came to see the presence of God s will for them. Both became messengers of God s will. That same Spirit of God s anointing rushed upon us at our baptism; we were given a candle as a sign of our membership in the Body of Christ, the Light from Light. Our vocation, then, is to fulfill that enlightenment, that anointing, as Ephesians tells us, by living as children of the light. Nuestra vocación, entonces, es cumplir esa iluminación, esa unción, como se nos dice en Efesios, viviendo como hijos de la luz. Yet, how extremely fitting to reflect upon the holy Birth of Jesus as we prepare our hearts for His glorious Resurrection! Both miraculous events call us into the radiant Light of the World and remind us that whoever follows Christ will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life (John 8:12).

ROSE OF LIMA PARISH Page 7 The V Encuentro for Hispanic/Latino Ministry is a four-year process of reflection and action that invites all Catholics in the United States to intense missionary activity, consultation, leadership development, and identification of best ministerial practices in the spirit of the New Evangelization. The V Encuentro is an initiative of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops that starts at the grass-roots level and calls for development of resources and initiatives to better serve the fast-growing Hispanic population in dioceses, parishes, ecclesial movements, and other Catholic organizations and institutions. St. Rose of Lima Church, will be holding our own V Encuentro, which consists of 5 sessions held in small groups, concluding with a parish celebration.
