Wisdom, like the word of God, carries a message of consolation as well as of great challenge. The Letter to the Hebrews tells us that the word of God, infused with the wisdom of God, is sharper than any two-edged sword. We cannot shrink from the wisdom of God, or from the word that has the power to penetrate our hearts and minds. Jesus, the living word of God, the embodiment of wisdom, has strong, deeply penetrating words for the rich young man who comes to him seeking answers to his most profound questions. Just when the young man thought he had done enough to fulfill God s commands, more was asked of him. This is no less true for us. CHURCH CONTRIBUTION UPDATE for St. Rose of Lima School Families The Parish Office has mailed the 2018 Contribution Statement to all families. Please take time to review your report to confirm that all donations have been applied to your account. Remember that the Pastor s Discretionary Discount for tuition is available to those Roman Catholic families who are registered members of St. Rose of Lima Church and approved by the Pastor. ROSE OF LIMA PARISH Page 5 TODAY S SECOND COLLECTION WILL BE FOR THE DIOCESE OF MONTEGO BAY, JAMAICA DIOCESE OF MONTEGO BAY FACT SHEET 2018 Established: The Diocese of Montego Bay, formerly a part of the Diocese of Kingston, was established in It covers the Western section of the island of Jamaica, including the principal resort areas along the northern coast Size: It is approximately 1,521.1 square miles or 3,878.8 kilometres in area. It contains the civil parishes of St. Ann, St. James, Trelawny, Hanover and Westmoreland. Catholic population: There are about 526,719 people living in the Diocese of Montego Bay of whom we estimate only 8,500 are Catholics or 1.6% of the population Bishops: On December the Diocese of Montego Bay received its first Bishop, a Jamaican born priest Fr. Edgerton R. Clarke now Archbishop Emeritus of Kingston. In February 1996 another Jamaican born priest Fr. Charles H. Dufour was appointed the second Bishop of Montego Bay. He served until 2011 and was succeeded by Jamaican born Fr. Burchell A. McPherson on June 8, 2013 Churches and Missions: The diocese now has 11 churches and 21 missions. Also through the courtesy of various hotels in the diocese we are able to offer Mass in more than one locations each weekend. Priests: The diocese has 17 priests. Of these four are native Jamaicans. We rely on priests from overseas to serve our churches and missions. Presently the other 11 priests are on loan from dioceses abroad. They are from Uganda, Tanzania, Fiji, the Phillipines, Poland, England, Pakistan, the South Pacific and the U.S.A. Seminarians: At present there is one Religious brother who just entered seminary. Three priests have been ordained between 2016 and 2017 which is the first such event in twelve years and six men are discerning for the Permanent Diaconate. Religious brothers and sisters: There are six congregations of religious women in the diocese and one brother who is a Franciscan friar. These sisters and brother have various ministries in the diocese including education, catechetics, medical and pastoral services. Three sisters from the Phillipines, the Compassionate Franciscan Missionaries of the Poor work in the health services at our newly constructed Hope Health (Teaching) clinic and which is operated under the social outreach arm of the diocese - The Good Shepherd Foundation- of which Bishop McPherson is the patron. The Diocese ends its Golden Jubilee year on December 8, 2018 and has embarked on a massive renovation drive of the Cathedral of the Most Sacrament in Montego Bay. School and outreach facilities: The diocese operates 5 basic schools, 3 primary schools, 2 all-age schools, 2 kindergarden/preparatory schools and a high school for girls, 2 vocational schools and self help adult skills training centre at another inner city community in Mt. Salem, just outside of Montego Bay. Soup kitchens are operated in 3 parishes and hot meals and food distribution is provided regularly to the poor and street people.

This opening verse of today s responsorial psalm echoes the challenge issued by Jesus to all who wish to be His faithful followers. If we place God in the very center of every thought, word and action, then our lives will be a daily witness to the vast richness of God s reign in the world. By opening our hearts to His powerful grace we will receive all that is needed to remain generous co-workers for the mission of Christ. PRAYER FOR PROTECTION FROM STORMS God our Father, Creator of the Universe and Lord over all creation, we humbly stand before you as your children in thanksgiving for your loving care and protection. We ask that you keep us safe from all hurricanes which may threaten us in the coming seasons. Protect us from all fear and anxiety of storms and give us an ardent trust and hope in your love and mercy. You alone have the power to command the sea, the wind and the rain. You alone bring peace, calm, and safety. Father, we thank you in advance for you are our only refuge.
