At time Sting Commission for Revision Episcopal Hymnal was busy seeking tunes for possible inclusion in The Hymnal was immediately taken by David s skills as a sensitive composer integrity, matched by his delightful personality. nly one his tunes, Palmer Church, was chosen at time. But in 1997 three ors were selected for inclusion in Wonder, Love Praise, first supplement to The Hymnal David s newer settings continue to proundly support amplify meaning texts with which y are matched are eminently suited for congregational singing. Therefore, y are being accepted more more for inclusion in denominational hymnals hymnal supplements. Several tunes in this new collection, set to texts already associated with beloved tunes, fer an exped, fresh, exciting vision ir meaning. Congregations wedded to old familiar may reect se settings at first, but because David s skills as a composer, ir repeated use will assure ir acceptance. Furr, feel sure se tunes, as well as ors in collection, will prove to be suitable for editors hymnal committees seeking tunes for new hymnals supplements y are creating. n addition, David s ntroduction Background on Tune Names, which are included in this new collection, will exp user s understing book s content. Because se tunes fresh varied styles composition (some using hbells or including descants), also do not hesitate to recommend m to church musicians as a valuable resource as anms. Finally, one must applaud say thank you to publisher for his vision in fering this rich resource hymn texts with tunes by David Ashley White! Raymond F. 8 ntroduction Composing hymns has long been a passion mine, going back to At urging Meg Flowers, musician at Palmer Memorial Episcopal Church, Houston, with a stack approved hymn texts for The Hymnal 1982 in h, set out to work. Most, if not all, those settings eventually found a home in my first collection, Sing, My Soul (1996). Subsequently, two more books appeared Songs for a New Creation (2002) New Harmony: A Harp Thous Strings (2006), all published by Selah. The latter was a fruitful collaboration with poet Richard Leach reflected our being influenced inspired, in various ways, by 19 th century Sourn hymns, such as those from The Sacred Harp. ll Sing Joyful Be, with few exceptions, comprises works composed since A number were commissions from churches or individuals. Some were composed to honor friends or for or special purposes. The remainder came late (December 2013 January 2014), simply to fill in missing pieces in this collection, adding necessary variety or texture. As was case in my first two collections, wanted this book to include a variety texts, both old new. am especially pleased that three my favorite writers ( also good friends) Richard Leach, Rae Whitney, Carl P. Daw, Jr. are all represented in se pages. Because was fortunate to have had wonderful English teachers in public schools in my native South Texas, have always been drawn to poetry. Thus, in addition to hymns or liturgical music, secular songs choral music have always been a prime interest for me. n case hymn texts, while ir meaning or message must be sound, also search for what consider a use beautiful language, or better, that which is poetic. Fine examples are found in two texts used with new tune Helen: Rae Whitney s Eternity touched hs with time, for which my tune was composed, a subsequent pairing with brief 18 th century stanza, When Jesus wept, for which Richard Leach wrote a second stanza, an effective reflection. ll Sing Joyful Be would not have been possible without support from those closely involved with proect, namely my publisher at Selah, David P. Schaap, Richard Leach, who compiled index for this book. Thanks also go to Ray Glover for his Foreword. David Ashley White 27 January 2014 General performance notes Suggested metronomic markings for each hymn are indicated, which, in combination with intent text, should indicate overall desired style (e.g. expressive, dancelike, etc.). While congregational singing se hymns is goal, many would also be well suited for use as choir anms.
