There's plenty of money in grandfather Buckle's will, but these two black sheep are pretty sure they'll never see any of that. What else to do but dress Billy up as a nun and have him pose as their cousin who is to inherit the entire fortune? The play is in good fun with nothing offensive, but is for adults. Come and enjoy a good meal and a bundle of laughs. Dates: Feb. 2, 3, 4 and 8, 9 10, 11 Cost: $35 evening show, $15 for Sun. 7 Sacred Scripture and Its Proclamation in the Liturgy During the last two weeks we have focused on the principles pertaining to Holy Communion and the one who distributes it at Mass. This week we turn our attention to Sacred Scripture and its proclamation in the Mass. The Bible and the Mass A Message From Our Pastor Scripture scholar and convert to Catholicism Scott Hahn notes the intimate connection between the Bible and the Mass. We should read the Bible in its natural and supernatural habitat. We should read the Bible in light of the liturgy. The Bible and the liturgy were made for each other... There were no printing presses in their day, and very few people could afford to have books copied out by hand. So people did not so much read the Scriptures as absorb them, mostly in the Mass... In the early Church, the Bible was considered a liturgical book. Indeed, the canon the official list of books in the Bible was originally drawn up to limit the texts that could be used as readings in the Mass (Consuming the Word: The New Testament and the Eucharist in the Early Church, 134). In fact, the documents we call the New Testament were written to be proclaimed in the context of the Sacrament we call the Holy Eucharist. They are to be read aloud in the assembly (Revelation 1:3) (Hahn, 45). The Christian faith, however, is not a religion of the Book, but of the Word of God not a written and mute word, but incarnate and living (Saint Bernard of Clairvaux) (Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, 18). Indeed, this Word proclaimed in the Scriptures is the Divine Person of the Incarnate Son of God, Jesus Christ: Through all the words of Sacred Scripture, God speaks only one single Word, His one Utterance in whom He expresses Himself completely (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 102). Substantial Component of the Mass in All Times and Places Given the intimate connection between the Bible and the Mass the Incarnate Word who makes Himself present through the Scriptures and the Eucharistic elements it is not surprising that the Scriptures have always been a component of the very substance of all Eucharistic liturgies throughout all times and places (see Denis Crouan, The History and Future of the Roman Liturgy, 18). This scriptural component comprises the Psalms (Entrance Chant, Gradual [or Tract] or Responsorial Psalm, Communion Chant) as well as the readings (Old Testament, Letters of the Apostles, Gospel). The Scriptural Principles of Vatican II The Second Vatican Council ( ) set forth principles that were intended to guide the reform of the Liturgy of the Roman Rite so as to reinforce its scriptural component. The two fundamental principles were that in sacred celebrations there is to be more reading from Holy Scripture, and it is to be more varied and suitable (Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy Sacrosanctum Concilium, 35). At the time of the convocation of the Second Vatican Council, the Missal of Saint John XXIII (1962) contained one percent of the Old Testament and 17 percent of the New Testament. In light of the principles set forth by the Council fathers, the revised Lectionary cycles of readings (Sunday three-year cycle [A, B, C] and weekday two-year cycle [I, II]) contain 14 percent of the Old Testament and 72 percent of the New Testament (see Paul Turner, At the Supper of the Lamb: A Pastoral and Theological Commentary on the Mass, 26). Also, extensive options of readings are given in Lectionary and ritual books. What is more, the texts themselves of the Mass and other rituals are often taken directly from the Scriptures or allude to them. Further, the exhortation of the Council fathers that Gregorian chant should be given pride of place in liturgical services (Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy Sacrosanctum Concilium, 116) reflects the Scriptural principle insofar as the chants for the Entrance, Gradual or Tract, Offertory, and Communion prescribed by the Roman Gradual or Simple Gradual are for the most part texts from Sacred Scripture. Liturgical Reader in Antiquity With regard to the proclamation of the Scriptures in the Mass, it is instructive to look at the liturgical reader in Sacred Tradition and history. It is important to note that certain distinctions were observed. There have been from the beginning P a g e 7

8 A Message From Our Pastor Continued readers distinct from the celebrant as in the synagogue. Jesus Himself observed this distinction: And He (Jesus) came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up; and He went to the synagogue, as His custom was, on the Sabbath day. And He stood up to read; and there was given to Him the book of the prophet Isaiah. He opened the book and found the place... and He closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant, and sat down (Luke 4:16-20). The current General Instruction of their Roman Missal (Third Typical Edition) confirms this ancient distinction: The function of proclaiming the readings is by tradition not presidential but ministerial (59). This distinction is reflected in the current discipline that has the Lector proclaim the readings excluding the Gospel which is properly proclaimed by the Deacon, or in his absence, a Priest other than the celebrant (see General Instruction of the Roman Missal Third Typical Edition, 59). Also, an examination of the history of the liturgy shows that very quickly the Lector actually became a permanent ministry into which the participants were initiated by the blessing of the Bishop and not by the imposition of hands which was reserved for Holy Orders (see A. G. Martimort, The Church at Prayer, vol. 3, ). So, for example, Hippolytus ( AD) writes in his The Apostolic Tradition that a Lector is appointed by the Bishop s giving him the book; for he is not ordained (12). Minor Orders up to 1972 With the passage of time four formalized, ministerial and liturgical functions were grouped under the somewhat misleading title of Minor Orders, namely, Porter (Doorkeeper), Lector, Exorcist, and Acolyte. These Minor Orders as they were called eventually came to be considered exclusively as training for the reception of the Sacrament of Holy Orders. In time, the so-called Sub-deacon who had no specific ministerial or liturgical function became the principal Lector and the principal Acolyte. In practice, then, from the Middle Ages until the liturgical reform following the Second Vatican Council, it was customary for clerics to do the readings at Mass. In fact, most of the time the Lectors at Mass were ordained Priests who functioned as Sub-deacons or Deacons at a Solemn High Mass. Instituted Ministry of Lector With his 1972 Apostolic Letter On First Tonsure, Minor Orders, and the Sub-diaconate Ministerial quaedam, Blessed Paul VI suppressed the Minor Orders while retaining two ministries received by institution not ordination: Lector (in service of the Word) and Acolyte (in service of the Eucharist). Since these instituted ministries may be assigned to the lay members of Christ s faithful, the restriction of the function of liturgical Reader to those in the clerical state was effectively abolished. According to the discipline established by Blessed Paul VI, these instituted ministries of Lector and Acolyte are restricted to men and bestow a permanent function on the man who receives them. Non-instituted Ministry of Reader The current discipline of the Church is that in the absence of an instituted Lector, other lay people may be deputed to proclaim the readings from Sacred Scripture (General Instruction of the Roman Missal Third Typical Edition, 59, ) at Mass and other liturgical services. To reflect this distinction, the one who has received the permanent ministry through institution by the Bishop is called a Lector while the one who without institution proclaims the readings is referred to as a Reader. This extension of the function of liturgical Reader to lay members of Christ s faithful is enshrined in various instructions and legislation implementing the principles of the reform of the sacred liturgy set forth by the Second Vatican Council. The reform of the liturgy following the Second Vatican Council included since 1969 the provision that both men and women of the lay faithful are permitted to exercise the non-instituted ministry of Reader.
