1 Dear Parent: Your child s baptism is a time for celebration and joy for both your family and the Catholic Community here at St. Lucy s. We are here to assist you in this celebration. The Church Community affirms and supports your decision to have your child baptized. This time of preparation is a wonderful time to explore and evaluate your own faith and practice. Just as your child will bear your physical features and pick up your mannerisms, he or she will also grow in the faith you model as a parent. That is why, when you approach the Church about having your child baptized, we will want to be assured that your faith is precious to you. The very fact that you have asked to have your baby baptized is a sign that you recognize the importance of God in your life. Please review the procedures enclosed in this packet. Important information regarding preparation for and celebration of the sacrament as well as information regarding the selection of Godparents is included. 3 Baptismal Process at St. Lucy The baptismal process at St. Lucy begins with a Baptism Reflection Appointment with both parents of the child to be baptized. This appointment will be with a St. Lucy pastoral staff member. Baptisms are not only a time of celebration but more importantly a time of prayer and reflection. Because of the significance and importance of the Sacrament of Baptism, families should not rush through the process. Please allow at least 2 months for the entire baptismal process. At the Baptism Reflection Appointment families will be given a baptismal registration packet. A Baptism Registration Appointment will be needed to submit this registration packet and only one parent need attend this appointment. Please complete the packet as fully as possible and bring it to the Baptism Registration Appointment along with a birth certificate. It is customary for parents or godparents to make a baptismal offering. St. Lucy kindly requests a minimum $100 (baptisms celebrated within the established schedule). It is requested that this baptismal offering be made at the time the Baptism Registration Appointment. Please do not pay the priest or pastoral staff member during the Baptism Reflection Appointment or after the baptism in the church. Please make checks payable to St. Lucy and write the child s name on the memo line. The baptismal process at St. Lucy includes a Baptism Retreat Experience for the parents and godparents. If godparents are not able to participate in the Baptism Retreat Experience at St. Lucy a baptism preparation class taken at any Roman Catholic Church will suffice. A certificate of class attendance will need to be submitted at least 1 week prior to the date of baptism. Parents and children preparing for baptism will receive a special blessing at the Rite of Welcome at select Masses. Godparents are more than welcome to participate in this rite if they are able. The role of the godparent(s) is to join the parents in presenting the child for baptism, to assist the parents in passing the faith on to the child, and to represent the community in accepting the child as a member of the Church. This is not just an honorary role, but rather a role of great significance and responsibility. The godparent must be a practicing Catholic, at least 16 years old, and be fully initiated (has received Baptism, Confirmation, and First Eucharist).
