Certainly the idea of getting by with a little help from God goes back at least to the first reading today from Exodus. How we get that help, however, is the key to this weekend s scriptures. No matter how inadequate Moses felt to the task God had given him, he persevered even though he needed help from the people around him. The Israelites especially depended on God for freedom. The woman in the Gospel, desperate and destitute, had no one to depend on, but still she would not give up. She could not afford to bribe the unscrupulous judge, but she pestered him into weariness until finally he met her demands. We sometimes need to turn to others to help us through difficult times; but if we always turn to God, we won t be disappointed, for our help, the psalm assures us, is from the Lord. Copyright J. S. Senior and Ambassador Girl Scouts (9 th -12 th Grades) are now meeting at the St. Monica / St. Stephen of Hungary / St. Elizabeth of Hungary Parish Center, located at 406 East 80 th Street. Meetings are held on Saturdays. The schedule is fluid and the time is 10am 12pm. What a difference a few weeks makes. 3 weeks ago we were sweating in church. This past weekend it was chilly! And next weekend, though sunny, will not be much warmer. A couple of you pointed out the chilliness in the church this past Sunday... in a quite pointed manner! If the church gets cold we will turn on the heat, no worries, it is just that one of my responsibilities is the steward of the parish goods. We have eight buildings to heat in some way. The schools pay their own heating bills; the other six facilities are our responsibility. So if I can avoid turning on the heat in them for as long as possible, that can be a saving of thousands of dollars. Why the Cops? Several of you will have noticed the heavy police presence here at 413 East 79 th Street this past Monday. We offered to the NYPD the use of our parish hall for their Post-Columbus Day parade lunch. We had hundreds of police officers in attendance. The NYPD does so much to keep our city safe, it was the least we could do, to open the doors to them. Servers, Catechists and Volunteers As I said last week at mass, our religious education program has nearly doubled since its inception. As a result, we need volunteers who can help with the teaching, the organizing, and the hospitality in this growing ministry. Also we are in desperate need of servers in the parish. As I have said, we welcome adults as well as children; indeed, the majority of servers in the parish are adults. Common objections to serving: 1. I don t have time It takes the same amount of time as mass, and if you are in church anyway My schedule is crazy We make a schedule every month to two months all you have to do is give us your available dates and we will accommodate you. 3. I wouldn t know what to do We ll take care of that training is easy. 4. I d feel silly getting all dressed up like that! Take it from a priest who gets all dressed up like that all the time you get used to it. And besides, the special clothes you wear to serve are no different than the special clothes we wear to a wedding, work in a hospital, or serve in any public service that requires a uniform. 5. I m a shy person uncomfortable in front of crowds Yes, this is an issue. But if your shyness has ever been a cross for you, this is a good way to get over it. Serving at mass is always done with others, with clear guidelines to help you gain confidence. Our faith relationship is like any relationship. It doesn t grow itself. It grows because of our love and because we are generous with our time talent and treasure. If you have been trying to find a way to give back, try volunteering. 4 TREASURES FORM OUR TRADITION From the early medieval period, it was expected that the many bishops of Italy travel to Rome at least once every three years to give a report of their ministry, with a footnote granting the bishops of Sicily a visit every five years. By the eleventh century, the idea of bishops visiting the tombs of the apostles was a very strict requirement for all within reasonable reach of Rome. The age of discovery and the expansion of the Church into remote corners of the earth made this an unreasonable burden in many cases, yet every bishop was required at least to send a representative to Rome every five years. In 1911, Pope St. Pius X established the rule for a quinquennial (meaning once in five years ) report, called an ad limina. This literally means to the threshhold, and refers to the expectation that the visiting bishop will go to the thresholds of the tombs of the apostles Peter and Paul and to a personal audience with the Holy Father. An exemption was given to so-called mission territories, which in 1911 included the United States. The reports were still required, but could be filed by letter with an office of the missions called Propagation of the Faith. This status was changed in 1917 and since that time all American bishops have been subject to the ad limina. These reports, carefully kept in the Vatican archives, are a treasure trove for historians, providing snapshots of culture and faith and a record of the Church s resilience even in times of persecution and change. THANKSGIVING DINNER Yes, the annual St Monica/ St Elizabeth of Hungary/ St Stephen of Hungary will be held on Thursday, November 24th.
