2 The Officiant says Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Philippians 1:2 Confession of Sin All kneel. The Deacon or Officiant then says Dear friends in Christ, here in the presence of Almighty God, let us kneel in silence, and with penitent and obedient hearts confess our sins, so that we may obtain forgiveness by his infinite goodness and mercy. Silence may be kept. Officiant and People Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. The Deacon or Officiant stands and says Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life. For the Lord is a great God, * and a great King above all gods. In his hand are the caverns of the earth, * and the heights of the hills are his also. The sea is his, for he made it, * and his hands have molded the dry land. Come, let us bow down, and bend the knee, * and kneel before the Lord our Maker. Readings A period of silence will follow each reading. First Reading Malachi 3:1-4 The people remain seated. A Reading from the book of the prophet Malachi. See, I am sending my messenger to prepare the way before me, and the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple. The messenger of the covenant in whom you delight indeed, he is coming, says the Lord of hosts. But who can endure the day of his coming, and who can stand when he appears? For he is like a refiner s fire and like fullers soap; he will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the descendants of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, until they present offerings to the Lord in righteousness. Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the Lord as in the days of old and as in former years. Reader People The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Silence. 6 Canticle 16 The Song of Zechariah Benedictus Dominus Deus Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel; * he has come to his people and set them free. He has raised up for us a mighty savior, * born of the house of his servant David. Through his holy prophets he promised of old, that he would save us from our enemies, * from the hands of all who hate us. He promised to show mercy to our fathers * and to remember his holy covenant. This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham, * to set us free from the hands of our enemies, Free to worship him without fear, * holy and righteous in his sight all the days of our life. You, my child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High, * for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way, To give his people knowledge of salvation * by the forgiveness of their sins. 7 Second Reading Hebrews 2:14-18 The people are seated. A Reading from Paul s letter to the Hebrews. Since, therefore, the children share flesh and blood, he himself likewise shared the same things, so that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by the fear of death. For it is clear that he did not come to help angels, but the descendants of Abraham. Therefore he had to become like his brothers and sisters in every respect, so that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make a sacrifice of atonement for the sins of the people. Because he himself was tested by what he suffered, he is able to help those who are being tested. Reader People The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Silence. The glorious company of apostles praise you. The noble fellowship of prophets praise you. The white-robed army of martyrs praise you. 9 Gospel Reading Luke 2:22-40 Please be seated. In the service of Holy Eucharist, we stand for the gospel reading. In the service of Morning Prayer, however, we sit for all the readings. A Reading from Luke. When the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses, Jesus parents brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord (as it is written in the law of the Lord, Every firstborn male shall be designated as holy to the Lord ), and they offered a sacrifice according to what is stated in the law of the Lord, a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons. Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; this man was righteous and devout, looking forward to the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit rested on him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord s Messiah. Guided by the Spirit, Simeon came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him what was customary under the law, Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying, Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel. And the child s father and mother were amazed at what was being said about him. Then Simeon blessed them and said to his mother Mary, This child is destined for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed so that the inner thoughts of many will be revealed and a sword will pierce your own soul too. There was also a prophet, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age, having lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, then as a widow to the age of eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshiped there with fasting and prayer night and day. At that moment she came, and began to praise God and to speak about the child to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem. When they had finished everything required by the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him. Reader People The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 9

10 Remain seated for the sermon. Sermon The Rev. Bruno Schroeder Apostles Creed All stand for the creed. I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Offertory 10

And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. 14 Collect of the Day The Officiant then says Almighty and everliving God, we humbly pray that, as your only-begotten Son was this day presented in the temple, so we may be presented to you with pure and clean hearts by Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. A Collect for Sundays The Officiant then says O God, you make us glad with the weekly remembrance of the glorious resurrection of your Son our Lord: Give us this day such blessing through our worship of you, that the week to come may be spent in your favor; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. A Collect for Mission The Officiant then says Almighty and everlasting God, by whose Spirit the whole body of your faithful people is governed and sanctified: Receive our supplications and prayers which we offer before you for all members of your holy Church, that in their vocation and ministry they may truly and devoutly serve you; through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen. Prayers of the People Intercessor or Deacon then says I ask your prayers for God s people throughout the world; for our Bishops; for our clergy; for this gathering; and for all ministers and people. Pray for the Church Silence I ask your prayers for peace; for goodwill among nations; and for the well-being of all people. Pray for justice and peace. Silence 14

15 I ask your prayers for the poor, the sick, the hungry, the oppressed, and those in prison. Pray for those in any need or trouble. Silence I ask your prayers for all who seek God, or a deeper knowledge of him. Pray that they may find and be found by him. Silence I ask your prayers for the departed. Pray for those who have died. Silence Praise God for those in every generation in whom Christ has been honored. Pray that we may have grace to glorify Christ in our own day. Your petitions and thanksgivings are invited at this time. Silence The General Thanksgiving Officiant and People Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we your unworthy servants give you humble thanks for all your goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all whom you have made. We bless you for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for your immeasurable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And, we pray, give us such an awareness of your mercies, that with truly thankful hearts we may show forth your praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up our selves to your service, and by walking before you in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory throughout all ages. 16 A Prayer of St. Chrysostom Officiant concludes Almighty God, you have given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplication to you; and you have promised through your well-beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his Name you will be in the midst of them: Fulfill now, O Lord, our desires and petitions as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of your truth, and in the age to come life everlasting. Amen. 2 Corinthians 13:14 Voluntary A Note on Today s Readings The Presentation of our Lord Jesus Christ in the Temple Years A, B, C Today the Church celebrates our Lord s presentation to God on the fortieth day after his birth, in obedience to the Jewish Law. This is a moment of manifestation of Jesus as the Messiah when Old and New Testament come together in the testimony of the aged priest Simeon and the prophetess Anna. The words of Simeon are a regular feature of the Church s evening liturgies. The first reading from Malachi reflects the hope of the prophets for the coming of the Messiah and the inauguration of God s reign over all the earth. The second reading is from Hebrews. The writer explains that Jesus work as savior is made possible because he is God incarnate, fully human and fully divine. God saved the human race not from the outside but by entering into the world and becoming human and, having taking humanity into the divine life, redeemed the human race. We return today to the joy of Christmas and in our liturgy we witness to the presence of God in the world coming to us in Bread and Wine and coming to the world through us, the Body of Christ. 18 EYC Exciting things are happening...we have begun meeting with the youth from Church of Redeemer and St. Mark s at DeMiller Hall, 610 Water Street, Biloxi (street behind the old bell tower of Redeemer). We need help in furnishing the new Youth Room at DeMiller Hall. Donations of furniture (couch/chairs/coffee tables/rugs/large pillows and a mini-fridge) are needed. Please contact the church office for more information. Samaritan Ministry Food Pantry continues to need peanut butter and cereal along with canned and non-perishable food. If you can help, please bring to the church or take to the Food Pantries. Celebrate Valentine s Day by attending the workshop Pilgrimage Toward Loving Self and Others with Kaye Lindauer, story teller and Jungian Scholar. The workshop is Friday, February 14, 7-9 PM and Saturday, February 15, 1-4 PM. Registration forms are available in the parish hall and church office. For more information call Linda Schroeder The Lord is My Help is in need of a volunteer driver to deliver lunches to the elderly, disabled or otherwise in need in the St. Martin-D Iberville area on Wednesdays of each week. Also, a substitute driver for the same route is needed. St. Luke s Guild will meet at Gulf Oaks Club House on February 27 at 7:00 p.m. for their monthly pot-luck dinner with Je Nell Blocker hostess. Ash Wednesday, March 5, services will be Holy Eucharist and Imposition of Ashes at 7:00 AM, 12 Noon and 5:30 PM. Baptisms at Easter. The next regularly scheduled baptismal service is at the Easter Vigil on Saturday, April 19. If you are an adult who wishes to be baptized, then please inform the priest of your desire. Preparation of adults for baptism occurs during the season of Lent each year. Adults to be baptized will begin their baptismal journey on Ash Wednesday, March 5. Nursery care is available for young children during the 9:00 & 11:15 A.M. services. The Joy Room, next to the Nursery, has live video and audio of the service for parents with unhappy babies. 19
