2 Dear Mary Star of the Sea Parishioners: A Blessed Easter to you all. We especially welcome those of you who may be visiting us from out of town. This is such a joyous season and opportunity to thank Our Blessed Lord for his suffering, death, and resurrection. He died and rose for each and every one of us. He would do it all over again for the salvation of each soul so much does He love us. Below is a reflection on Easter by a great Doctor of the Church. I hope you enjoy it. Harrigan Pastor From a discourse on the psalms by Saint Augustine, bishop The Easter Alleluia Our thoughts in this present life should turn on the praise of God, because it is in praising God that we shall rejoice forever in the life to come; and no one can be ready for the next life unless he trains himself for it now. So we praise God during our earthly life, and at the same time we make our petitions to him. Our praise is expressed with joy, our petitions with yearning. We have been promised something we do not yet possess, and because the promise was made by one who keeps his word, we trust him and are glad; but insofar as possession is delayed, we can only long and yearn for it. It is good for us to persevere in longing until we receive what was promised, and yearning is over; then praise alone will remain. Because there are these two periods of time the one that now is, beset with the trials and troubles of this life, and the other yet to come, a life of everlasting serenity and joy we are given two liturgical seasons, one before Easter and the other after. The season before Easter signifies the troubles in which we live here and now, while the time after Easter which we are celebrating at present signifies the happiness that will be ours in the future. What we commemorate before Easter is what we experience in this life; what we celebrate after Easter points to something we do not yet possess. This is why we keep the first season with fasting and prayer; but now the fast is over and we devote the present season to praise. Such is the meaning of the Alleluia we sing. Both these periods are represented and demonstrated for us in Christ our head. The Lord s passion depicts for us our present life of trial shows how we must suffer and be afflicted and finally die. The Lord s resurrection and glorification show us the life that will be given to us in the future. Now therefore, brethren, we urge you to praise God. That is what we are all telling each other when we say Alleluia. You say to your neighbor, Praise the Lord! and he says the same to you. We are all urging one another to praise the Lord, and all thereby doing what each of us urges the other to do. But see that your praise comes from your whole being; in other words, see that you praise God not with your lips and voices alone, but with your minds, your lives and all your actions. We are praising God now, assembled as we are here in church; but when we go on our various ways again, it seems as if we cease to praise God. But provided we do not cease to live a good life, we shall always be praising God. You cease to praise God only when you swerve from justice and from what is pleasing to God. If you never turn aside from the good life, your tongue may be silent but your actions will cry aloud, and God will perceive your intentions; for as our ears hear each other s voices, so do God s ears hear our thoughts. 2 March 27, 2016

MYTHS: human trafficking Human trafficking is an issue that has received extensive attention lately in local and national news, yet the issue can be confusing and is often misunderstood. Many people believe that a victim must be moved from one location to another, or across state or international borders. Transportation is only one element. It is important for us to remember that victims could be exploited in their own states and neighborhoods, or even at home. We need to pay particular attention to the reality that children, one of the most vulnerable and soughtafter populations by traffickers, could be victims of trafficking and yet could still come home every night for dinner, sleep in their own beds, and be present at school every day, as the traffickers will do whatever they need to do to avoid detection. 4 Fiesta Queen Committee Mary Star Queen committee is looking for girls 14-19, affiliated with our Parish, to run for queen. Save the Date 2016 Parish Fiesta! TOGETHER IN MISSION CAMPAIGN 2016 Goal: $85,200 Amount Pledged: $53,422 *If you have not turned in your pledge envelopes, please fill them out and mail them in with your pledge. We still have a long ways to go!! The contest is about 7 weeks long and there are fundraising events planned. The committee meets with the girls to help with planning. Our Queen is invited to parish functions during the year and also is part of the San Pedro Christmas Parade. 5 Madonna Dell Arco Mosaic Dedication On Sunday, Apri1 17, 2016 the Italian Catholic Federation is having the dedication of the new Madonna dell Arco mosaic at the noon mass. A luncheon will follow in the auditorium. Price $ Call Neal Di Leva at for tickets. The Italian Community has been long devoted to the Madonna dell Arco. The name of the Madonna dell Arco originates from an area where there were many aqueduct with arches (arco) and columns built during the Roman Empire. On one of these columns a devoted artist painted the image of the Blessed Virgin and Child. Many centuries later, youths were playing bocce ball near this column. After a clumsy throw, the ball of one of the players hit a tree that shaded the sacred shrine. The youth, blinded by anger, retrieved the ball and threw it against the image of Our Lady, hitting her the right cheek. To the shock of all those present, the cheek was seen to bleed, as if it were of real flesh. Years later this original image was cut away from the column and placed in the Sanctuary in Naples, Italy. Many miracles were recorded since then and in March 1675 for about a month, the image of Our Lady was seen surrounded by stars, while the right cheek appeared red with blood. A portrait of the image of the Madonna dell Arco was dedicated on January 27, 2013 at Mary Star and was placed in the Shrine of Saint John Joseph of the Cross. Three years later the portrait was replace with a mosaic donated by Mr. Joseph Scotti and on January 12, 2016 the mosaic was permanently placed on the wall in the shrine. Jubilee Year of Mercy - Divine Mercy Novena JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY DIVINE MERCY NOVENA In preparation for Divine Mercy Sunday, Jesus asked St. Faustina to make a novena of prayer beginning on Good Friday. We will be praying this novena at Mary Star which will conclude on Divine Mercy Sunday, April 3rd. (for dates and times check the Holy Week and Easter schedule in the bulletin as well as flyers in the church) DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY APRIL 3 rd Our Lord asked St. Faustina to pray and work towards establishing a feast of the Divine Mercy on the Sunday after Easter. He told her: On this day, the very depths of My tender mercy are open. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon souls who approach the fount of My Mercy. The soul that will go to confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment. Mankind will not enjoy peace until it turns with confidence to My Mercy. (Diary of St. Faustina 699) John Paul II proclaimed Mercy Sunday an official feast of the church in April of 2000 when he canonized St. Maria Faustina. On April 3 rd, Divine Mercy Sunday, the 9:00 am mass will be celebrated by our pastor, Fr. Harrigan. At 2:45pm*, in the church, there will be Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. This is followed by the Chaplet of Divine Mercy in song, the Litany of Mercy, Benediction, and veneration of a first class relic of St. Faustina. The celebration will conclude with a reception in the parish center. During our JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY, we have many grace -filled occasions to join with our parish community in prayer. *please note time change March 27,

6 FAITH FORMATION Easter Sunday Alleluia, Alleluia, Jesus is Risen! The season of Easter is fifty (50) days long to celebrate the Risen Christ among us. Easter is a time of feasting and JOY, a time to walk in the light of the Resurrection. It is a time to dream what the heavenly kingdom might look and feel like, a time to live "ALLELUIA." CONGRATULATIONS to the eighty-eight (88) children who celebrated their First Confession on March 5 and are now preparing to receive their First Communion. RICE BOWL The children have received Rice Bowl for their donations as a result of the sacrifices they are making for Lent. We will direct the money to help the Sisters of Cluny in Paraguay, South America where our sisters feed the street children and give literacy lessons. Please encourage your children by reminding them to make little sacrifices. Thank you to all who help us to recycle so that we can purchase resources for the children.
