Thou that takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us. For thou only art holy; thou only art the Lord; thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost, art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen. Collect of the Day Prayer Book, page 173 Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And with thy spirit. Celebrant Let us pray. God, whose Son Jesus is the good shepherd of thy people: Grant that when we hear his voice we O may know him who calleth us each by name, and follow where he doth lead; who, with thee and the Holy Spirit, liveth and reigneth, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. First Lesson: Nehemiah 9:6 15 (all sit) Ezra said, Thou art the Lord, thou alone; thou hast made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them; and thou preservest all of them; and the host of heaven worships thee. Thou art the Lord, the God who didst choose Abram and bring him forth out of Ur of the Chaldeans and give him the name Abraham; and thou didst find his heart faithful before thee, and didst make with him the covenant to give to his descendants the land of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite, the Perizzite, the Jebusite, and the Girgashite; and thou hast fulfilled thy promise, for thou art righteous. And thou didst see the affliction of our fathers in Egypt and hear their cry at the Red Sea, and didst perform signs and wonders against Pharaoh and all his servants and all the people of his land, for thou knewest that they acted insolently against our fathers; and thou didst get thee a name, as it is to this day. And thou didst divide the sea before them, so that they went through the midst of the sea on dry land; and thou didst cast their pursuers into the depths, as a stone into mighty waters. By a pillar of cloud thou didst lead them in the day, and 5

6 by a pillar of fire in the night to light for them the way in which they should go. Thou didst come down upon Mount Sinai, and speak with them from heaven and give them right ordinances and true laws, good statutes and commandments, and thou didst make known to them thy holy sabbath and command them commandments and statutes and a law by Moses thy servant. Thou didst give them bread from heaven for their hunger and bring forth water for them from the rock for their thirst, and thou didst tell them to go in to possess the land which thou hadst sworn to give them. People The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Alleluia: Redemptionem misit Alleluia, alleluia. V. Redemptionem misit Dominus populo suo. Alleluia. Mode II Alleluia, alleluia. V. The Lord hath sent redemption unto his people. Alleluia. (Psalm 111) Second Lesson: 1 Peter 2:19 25 One is approved if, mindful of God, he endures pain while suffering unjustly. For what credit is it, if when you do wrong and are beaten for it you take it patiently? But if when you do right and suffer for it you take it patiently, you have God s approval. For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps. He committed no sin; no guile was found on his lips. When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten; but he trusted to him who judges justly. He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Guardian of your souls. People The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Alleluia: Ego sum pastor bonus Alleluia. V. Ego sum pastor bonus: et cognosco oves meas, et cognoscunt me meae. Alleluia. Mode I Alleluia. V. I am the Good Shepherd: and know my sheep, and am known of mine. Alleluia. (John 10) 6

7 The Holy Gospel: John 10:1 10 People Glory be to thee, O Lord. Jesus said, Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door but climbs in by another way, that man is a thief and a robber; but he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. To him the gatekeeper opens; the sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. A stranger they will not follow, but they will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers. This figure Jesus used with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them. So Jesus again said to them, Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. All who came before me are thieves and robbers; but the sheep did not heed them. I am the door; if any one enters by me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly. Deacon People The Gospel of the Lord. Praise be to thee, O Christ. The Sermon Fr Evans The Nicene Creed (all stand, as able) I Music inside the back cover of the Prayer Book believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible; And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father; by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven (all genuflect), and was incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary, and was made man (all stand); and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate; he suffered and was buried; and the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of the Father; and he shall come again, with glory, to judge both the quick and the dead; whose kingdom shall have no end. And I believe in the Holy Ghost the Lord, and Giver of Life, who proceedeth from the Father and the Son; who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified; who spake by the Prophets. And I believe one holy Catholic and Apostolic Church; I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins; and I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. 8 The Confession of Sin and Absolution Prayer Book, page 330 The Deacon bids the People make a general confession of their sins. Please kneel and say together Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, maker of all things, judge of all men: We acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness, which we from time to time most grievously have committed, by thought, word, and deed, against thy divine Majesty, provoking most justly thy wrath and indignation against us. We do earnestly repent, and are heartily sorry for these our misdoings; the remembrance of them is grievous unto us, the burden of them is intolerable. Have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; for thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ s sake, forgive us all that is past; and grant that we may ever hereafter serve and please thee in newness of life, to the honor and glory of thy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Celebrant pronounces the absolution. The offerings of the people are received during the Offertory. Offertory: Deus, Deus meus Deus, Deus meus, ad te de luce vigilo: et in nomine tuo levabo manus meas, alleluia. Mode II O God, thou art my God, early will I seek thee: and I will lift up my hands in thy name, alleluia. Offertory Hymn 345: The king of love my shepherd is Saint Columba The Celebrant may state the intention of the Mass, concluding People Pray, brothers and sisters, that our sacrifice may be acceptable to God the Father Almighty. May the Lord receive this sacrifice at thy hands, to the praise and glory of his Name, both to our benefit and that of all his holy Church. 8

Notes on Today s Music: The setting of the Mass ordinary is Missa Brevis by Andrea Gabrieli (c ). Gabrieli, uncle of the better known composer Giovanni Gabrieli was, like his nephew after him, organist and chief composer at Saint Mark s in Venice. He was one of ten unsuccessful candidates for the position in 1957, when Claudio Merulo was awarded the job. However, following service in the employ of Albrecht V, duke of Bavaria, Andrea was appointed to the San Marco post. While he was less prolific a composer that Giovanni, Andrea Gabrieli s works display a great versatility that brought international stature to the San Marco, and held significant influence over later Venetian and Southern German composers. Gabreli composed several masses, and many motets and madrigals, as well as keyboard music and pieces for the theatre. John Taverner (c ) was born in Boston in Lincolnshire around The first definite reference to Taverner is in , when he is recorded as being a lay clerk in the choir of the collegiate church in Tattershall, Lincolnshire. In 1525, Taverner was invited by John Longland, Bishop of Lincoln, to become master of the choristers at Cardinal College (now Christ Church), Oxford. He remained there until the 1530s, when Cardinal Wolsey (the college s namesake) had fallen from favor from Henry VIII, and the choral foundation was subsequently threatened. He returned to Boston, and remained there for the remainder of his life. It is probable that the majority of Taverner s music was written during the 1520s and 1530s, for both Tattersall and for Cardinal College. His music follows the traditions of the late Medieval English composers, and he contributed several magnificent settings of the Magnificat, Mass Ordinary, and Marian votive antiphons. The motet Christe Jesu pastor bone has text that has been adapted to honor Elizabeth I, but it was probably began as an antiphon to Saint William entitled O Wilhelme pastor bone. It features the typically soaring treble lines, and long, drawn-out melismas typical of the style. James Kennerley Christian Formation: Christian education for Children: Parents should bring children down to the Sunday School room immediately following the 9 o clock Mass. 12

13 Children s Resources: Copies of The Sunday Paper Junior, a wonderful resource for children to use during the Mass, are available (along with crayons) in the back of the church.
