2 ST. SIMON S ON THE SOUND EPISCOPAL CHURCH Issue 25 2 I can't say thanks enough for all that my St. Simon's Family has done for me these past weeks in the kindness of cards, candy, gifts and phone calls. You have always shown me Faith through your actions, Hope through your eyes and Love through your heart. May God's Peace be with you always...penny PENNY S PARTY My cup runneth over!!!!! Many heartfelt thanks for the lovely send-off this past Saturday Night at Pranzo's. From the beautiful red balloons, to the decadent chocolate cake, to the bright new shiny penny decorations, the pink piggy bank and to the giant penny replica my night couldn't have been any better. A special thanks to JoAnn Gorsuch for "running the show"! You are a true friend to me "sista girl"!!!! Equally important in making this happen are my wonderful friends Jan Morris and Ellen Sheppard who helped JoAnn and tirelessly gave it their all. Thank You from the bottom of my heart. Joe and I loved the song Ellen wrote and will try and sing it for my family when I travel to Arkansas this week. I am going to always treasure the hand written notes from everyone and the money from the piggy bank was an added surprise to help me get started in the next chapter of my life. You are truly the best!!!!! THOSE LENTEN DISCIPLINES Last Sunday in my sermon I mentioned what Episcopalians call Lenten Disciplines. These are really just a few added routines in our daily lives that we choose to take on for the 40 days of Lent, which begins Wednesday, February 13th with Ash Wednesday and continues through Holy Saturday, March 29 th, omitting Sundays. One of my favorite Lenten Disciplines is setting aside a bit of time each week for quiet meditative prayer. This quiet time of reflection and introspection allows me a chance to catch my breath in a busy season of the Church year. Lighting a candle in honor of a certain intention, such as living into Lenten disciplines, helps keep me focused on the purpose of Lent, to be better prepared to celebrate the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. Often times that quiet time occurs in a small chapel, finding two such locales at St. Simon s is a blessing to all of us who visit during the less busy times of the week. I was especially pleased to find the candle stand in our main chapel, right outside our office doors. Lighting a candle is an excellent way to give mental prayers a physical manifestation. The act of lighting a match, placing it near a wick, and then watching light burst forth is fulfilling and symbolic for us as human beings. Light is one of the oldest representations of Christ, daylight is of course where our Sunday Sabbath begins and ends. This awareness of light is especially true if you have ever been to an Easter Sunrise Service or an Easter Vigil on the eve of Easter. Becoming an Episcopalian in the early 1990 s I was delighted to be able to light a candle as I offered prayers, sensing my calling to the ordained ministry had returned. Our Church in Colorado also had a candle stand and Connie and I offered prayers there as we awaited Harrison, after a season of infertility. Attending seminary, candles continued to be a part of my spiritual discipline bringing me peace in the hardest times of balancing study and
3 ST. SIMON S ON THE SOUND EPISCOPAL CHURCH Issue 25 3 family, including two babies in diapers, and a Bernese Mountain Dog. Our candle stand at St. Simon s was donated in honor of long-time St. Simon s parishioner, Pat Butler, by her siblings. It is a beautiful addition, giving our main chapel a sense of solemnity and prayerful purpose, beyond corporate worship on Sunday evenings. I hope each of you will be able to find time in this busy Lenten season to light a candle, say a prayer, and perhaps find an additional spiritual discipline for life. There are certainly many other opportunities for Lenten disciplines in the coming weeks at St. Simon s, but lighting a candle is one of the most solidary and heart-felt available to any Christian. The Rev d Eric J. Zubler WHAT CAN I DO THIS LENT? The question of what one can do during Lent to make the season a better time of preparation is on the minds of many just now. The following list is intended to help get you thinking Remember; the point is not to prove something to God, but to use a practice as a means of appreciating God s act of love. Give up a small luxury like red meat, alcohol, chocolate, television. Take up a practice of prayer. Read the daily lessons as prescribed in the prayer book. Spend 15 minutes each day reading some part of the Bible. Read a spiritual classic. Devote 20 minutes of silence to the Lord each day. Keep a journal. Write a thank you note to someone each day. Make a list each day of your blessings. Exercise each day. Drink several glasses of water each day. Fast one day a week; eat only one meal. Go to a midweek Eucharist. Experiment with saying no. Experiment with saying yes. Eat supper with the family together. Simplify an aspect of your life. Clean up something which is cluttered. Alter an established routine. Make an extra financial gift. Do one thing each day to nurture yourself. FAITH MATTERS The Faith Matters class continues this Sunday at 9:30 a.m. as we look at different Christian denominations and how they developed. We continue to study Catholicism, Orthodoxy, Lutheranism, Presbyterianism, and Anglicanism. We will conclude by discussing the Baptists, Pentecostalism and Methodism. The study is based on a book by Adam Hamilton, Christianity's Family Tree: What Other Christians Believe and Why. Please join Rev. Dr. Linda Jones this Sunday at 9:30 a.m. in the Parish Hall. SOCK MONKEY LOVE Several of you have asked about learning to make sock monkeys. Anyone interested in a small, fun workshop, please give me a call to determine convenient days and times. The cost would be nothing except your enthusiastic participation; however, a $25 donation to benefit the Dominican Republic missions would be greatly appreciated. Jackie Glover CALLING ALL WHO ARE INTERESTED IN THE FLOWER GUILD Team #1 is in search of new members. Many of you will remember Edwin Xol from his visit to us Nov. 6, St. Simon s sponsored Edwin through elementary, middle and high school, and (although he won a prestigious scholarship for University in Guatemala City) for some of the extras needed by college students. As you may recall, Edwin earned the honor of Valedictorian of his graduating class both in High School and at University while working full time. Since graduation in 2005, Edwin has earned his Master s Degree in business and for the past year has been working at the Consulate in New York City! His desire now is to return to his native Guatemala, and to use his education and skills to build "really GOOD schools" in the impoverished villages of his native land, beginning with his own village of Punta Gorda. Edwin will be able to stop in Fort Walton on his way back home, and Keith and I are very excited to have him as
