3 SUNDAY, JANUARY 1, 2017 SOLEMNITY OF MARY, THE HOLY MOTHER OF GOD SOLEMNITY OF MARY, THE HOLY MOTHER OF GOD The shepherds went in haste to Bethlehem and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in the manger; once they saw, they understood what had been told them concerning this child. All who heard of it were astonished at the report Mary treasured all these things and reflected on them in her heart. Does it surprise you that the first to come and encounter Christ were lowly shepherds? They were certainly not the persons you may expect to greet a newborn baby. They accepted the good news and then reported it to others. Obviously, their story moved others as well. At the same time, Mary both treasured and reflected, sometimes the scriptures say pondered or weighed what she knew, saw and heard. How she felt may best be known by the mother of a newborn. It might be fitting to sit quietly like Mary and reflect upon the events. Christmas comes and goes so fast that we might overlook the great outpouring of the Father in giving us a needed Savior, and the role model of Mary treasuring and reflecting. May we treasure the coming of the Lord. SOLEMNITY OF MARY, THE HOLY MOTHER OF GOD First Reading: Numbers 6:22-27 The Lord told Aaron to bestow His blessings on the Israelites. God wanted them to know that by invoking His name they would be blessed by Him. Second Reading: Galatians 4:4-7 Paul describes how through Jesus birth, we have been delivered from the laws that exiled Gentiles from God s community. Through Jesus, the Gentiles became God s adopted sons and would receive the same blessings that the Jewish converts had been promised. Gospel: Luke 2:16-21 The shepherds went to Bethlehem to see Jesus and immediately understood all that they had been told about Him. They praised God for what they had seen, and Jesus was given the name that the angel had chosen for Him. GRATEFUL FOR YOUR PRESENCE We were very glad that you could be with us during the Christmas season. Whether you are a long-term parishioner of St. Catharine s, a first time visitor, or a college student home on break, we were blessed by your prayerful presence at our liturgy, and we ask God to bless you in return. This wonderful Christmas season evokes many memories for Catholics who may be away from active participation. Maybe you have been away for a while, but now you feel a tug at your heart calling you back to the Catholic Church. Listen to that tug. It s your Heavenly Father reaching His arms out to you, the Holy Spirit whispering in your ear, hoping to draw you home. It is never too late to come home, you are always welcome here! GRATEFUL FOR YOUR SUPPORT No one is more generous to us than God. God has given us life; He has blessed us with the gift of faith; He has given us this world to be our home; and He has sent His Son to be our Savior. In return, God expects us to be generous: with our love, with our time; with our resources; and with our talents. God is surely pleased with this wonderful community, and we are truly blessed to be part of such a faith-filled parish. The ongoing and unselfish giving of your time, talents and contributions enable us to do the work of the Lord here at St. Catharine s Parish. Your support, especially at this time of year, makes it possible for St. Catharine s Parish to continue to spread God s word, to celebrate the Eucharist, to offer the Sacraments, and to continue to build the many ministries and charitable activities that are a hallmark of our wonderful parish. May God bless you for your continued generosity and support. YOUR CHRISTMAS GIFT TO ST. CATHARINE S Your special Christmas Gift to our Parish is a very important part of our annual Parish income. Christmas Gift envelopes may be found on the Ushers tables located in the lobby of the Church. Thank you for your continued generosity and many sacrifices, and may the blessings of the Christ Child be with you and your loved ones throughout the Christmas season. ST. CATHARINE S PARISH REGISTRATION We respectfully urge all of our regular Mass goers to make sure they are officially registered with our Parish, use ParishPay or the envelope system, and get as involved as they can in our parish organizations, ministries, and activities. We are always in need of volunteers to step forward and serve our Parish as Eucharistic Ministers, Lectors, Ushers, Choir members, and Altar Servers. Please make a resolution this New Year to become more involved in our wonderful Parish.

4 SUNDAY, JANUARY 1, 2017 SOLEMNITY OF MARY, THE HOLY MOTHER OF GOD +SOLEMNITY OF MARY, MOTHER OF GOD+ The Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God is a liturgical feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary, celebrated throughout the Catholic world on January 1 st, the Octave Day of Christmas. It is a Holyday of Obligation. The feast is a celebration of Mary s motherhood of Jesus. The title, Mother of God is a western derivation from the Greek: Theotokos, meaning the God-bearer or Mother of God. The term was adopted by the First Council of Ephesus as a way to assert the Divinity of Christ, from which it follows that what is predicated of Christ is predicated of God. If Mary is the Mother of Jesus, who we acknowledge as the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity, then, it must be that Mary is the Mother of God. Mary became the mother of all humanity when Jesus, dying on the cross, gave her to the world. When she lost her divine son, her sorrowing heart was enlarged to make room for all men and women, whether good or bad, and she loves them as she loved Jesus. Mary is a source of hope and true joy and continually strengthens people in their faith, vocation and mission. By her example of humility and openness to God s will she helps us to transmit our faith in a joyful proclamation of the Gospel to all, without reservation. Elizabeth proclaimed: Most blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And how does this happen to me, that the Mother of my Lord should come to me? For, at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled. And Mary said, My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; my spirit rejoices in God, my Savior. MARY GOD S MOST BEAUTIFUL GIFT TO THE HUMAN RACE The moment Jesus came into her life she was full of grace and immediately she went with haste to give Him to others. The fruit of her oneness with Christ, the fruit of her prayer, the fruit of her total surrender to God by saying: Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be done to me according to Your Word. Saint Teresa of Calcutta THE MEMORARE Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help, or sought your intercession, was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto you, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother. To you I come; before you I stand sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate! Despise not my petitions, but in your mercy hear and answer me. Amen. BANNS OF MARRIAGE Peter Kowal Gina Pischera A CHRISTMAS THANK YOU! Thank you to all who helped make St. Catharine s Church so very beautiful, inside and outside, during this Christmas holiday. In a special way, we would like to thank the D Andrea Family for decorating our Parish Christmas Tree, Dave Dinan for constructing our outdoor Crèche, and Phyllis Corelli for repainting the figures in the Crèche. Please take time to enjoy these beautiful jewels in the crown of our Church. We also thank Father Abraham, Len and Chris Feroldi, Kerry Beckmann, Mary McCloskey and all of our other volunteers who worked to make our Church so beautiful for the great Feast of the Nativity of the Lord Thank you, also, to our wonderful Choirs, Lectors, Eucharistic Ministers, Ushers, Altar Servers, Altar Society, and everyone who shared their time and talent. Blessed Christmas wishes to you, All! A SPECIAL THANK YOU FROM THE SISTERS OF ST. DOMINIC OF BLAUVELT The Sisters at St. Dominic s Convent are very grateful to Christina Bruno for organizing the 2 nd annual presentation of Lessons and Carols at the Convent Chapel on December 9 th. They wish to thank soloists Christina Bruno, Jan Schutz, and Yas Yabyabin, Dr. Rene Dalandan, the Choir, and the musicians and readers from St. Catharine s for their magnificent presentation. The music, the readings, and the carols provided a welcome and reflective pause in the midst of a busy Advent season for the Sisters and for all who attended. They were privileged to be able to share their Chapel with everyone. RESPECT LIFE MASS ST. No interrupting, no planning your response. Just listen. 2. The Gift of Affection Be generous with the appropriate hugs, kisses, pats on the back, and handholds. Let these small actions demonstrate the love you have for family and friends. 3. The Gift of Laughter Clip cartoons. Share articles and funny stories. Your friends will know you are thinking of them. 4. The Gift of a Written Note It can be a simple, "Thanks for your help" note, or a full sonnet. A brief, handwritten note may be remembered for a lifetime, and may even change a life. 5. The Gift of a Compliment... A simple and sincere, "You look great in blue," or "You did a great job," or "That was a wonderful meal," make someone's day. 6. The Gift of a Favor... Go out of your way to do something kind for someone. 7. The Gift of Solitude There are times when we want nothing better than to be left alone. Be sensitive to those times and give the gift of solitude to others. 8. The Gift of Cheerful Disposition The easiest way to feel good is to extend a kind word to someone. It is not that hard to say: Hello or Thank You. Friends are a very rare jewel indeed. They make you smile and encourage you to succeed. They lend an ear, they share a word of praise, and they always want to open their hearts to us. The Tabernacle Candle was donated by The Armus Family In Loving Memory of Richard, Adele and Janis Duke The Altar Flowers were donated by Dave and Ellen Cahill In Loving Memory of Helen McLaughlin For everything there is a season and a time for every purpose under heaven. A time to heal We pray for God s tender mercy and loving kindness upon all of our loved ones who have experienced serious health issues.
