4 Welcome Reflections: Discover Your Belovedness this Lent This picture was taken on the road from Jericho to Jerusalem. My wife, Lisa, and I were struck by the baroness of the desert where, most likely, Jesus was tempted. The same Spirit that led Jesus out in to the desert to be tempted leads us into this Lenten desert these forty days. And just as Jesus faced temptation, we are called to face our own temptations that threaten us in our lives to not be who we are called to be. I was listening to a sermon by Henri Nouwen presented at the Crystal Cathedral on The Beloved. And in his talk he reminds us that just as Jesus came out of the waters of the Jordan a voice from heaven spoke calling him The Beloved. And when we have been baptized we are called God s Beloved sons and daughters. But just as Jesus faced the temptations in his desert journey, temptations that tried to convince him he was something other than God s beloved or that being The Beloved is something other than what He was called to be, so we too face temptations that try to convince us that we are not the Beloved of God - that God doesn t have a purpose for each and every one of us. Our Lenten journey is a time to face these temptations, whatever they may be and to name them and to seek God s help in overcoming them so that we can be who God calls us to be His Beloved Sons and Daughters. And as we face our temptations, we need to know that we do not face them alone. As a community we come together to share our blessedness with each other and the world. That is what we are called to do as Beloved Sons and Daughters of God. So as you journey through this Lenten season, and encounter our own temptations, know that we are never alone. We walk together through the desert to discover our own belovedness. We are truly blessed. Peace, Deacon Patrick

6 Welcome Prayer for Those in the Service Almighty God, we stand before you asking for your divine mercy and protection. Embrace with your invincible armor our loved ones in all branches of the service. Give them courage and strength against all enemies both spiritual and physical and hasten their safe journey back to their homes and families. Troy Monteville, Stateside, Ensign Robert Baker, USCG Cutter Dependable COMING UP - On Caring for Our Common Home Bartholomew, Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, along with Pope Francis issued a joint prayer on Sept. 1, 2017 drawing attention to the ethical and spiritual roots of environmental problems which require that we look for solutions not only in technology but in a change of humanity. Pope Francis, in his encyclical Laudati Si, asks us to replace consumption with sacrifice, greed with generosity, wastefulness with a spirit of sharing, and embody an asceticism which entails learning to give, and not simply to give up. (Paragraph 9) Soon, there will be opportunities to share what we are doing in our lives and what more we could do at home, at work, and in our parish to help the environment. Don t forget!!! We have a 5:00 PM Mass. You can sleep in on Sunday and go to the 5:00 PM Mass Sunday evening. Come and try it. The Blackstone Valley Community Shelter At St. Patricks Parish Center Thank you to everyone who has donated their time, blankets, pillows, gift cards and funds to enable this shelter to open up each Tuesday evening in our Parish Center. For more information please go to If you would like to help we still are in need of volunteers to stay with guests as well as, clean twin-sized blankets for guests that stay in the shelter. Also needed: Gift cards of $5.00-$10.00 for local restaurants so people can have a hot meal and stay in a warm building for a while during the day. The Knights of Columbus, Mumford Council #365 If you are not a member of the Knights of Columbus and would like to join us, please talk to any Knight or visit Each year the Knights of Columbus Mumford Council 365 awards scholarships to high school seniors. An application for the graduating class of 2018 can be obtained by calling Jon Belanger at (508) For a student to be eligible, they must have a relative who is an active member of K of C 365 and be attending a college, university or secondary school after graduation. Last year, the K of C 365 awarded (9) scholarships to area students. The Young Neighbors In Action and Anne Haas are collecting bottles and cans to help to defray the cost of the 2018 YNIA service trip to Green Bay Wisconsin. Please drop off your clean cans and bottles in the Parish Center. If you would like to have someone pick them up at your home, please call Anne Haas at Thank you for supporting our YNIA! If you don t plan to take the Bulletin home with you after Mass we ask you to please return them to either the Chapel or the back of the Church and don t leave them in the pews. But please take them home as a reference to what s coming up! ST.
