We have denied your goodness in each other, in ourselves, and in the world you have created. We repent of the evil that enslaves us, the evil we have done, and the evil done on our behalf. Lesson Exodus 16:2-15 The whole congregation of the Israelites complained against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness. The Israelites said to them, If only we had died by the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the fleshpots and ate our fill of bread; for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger. Then the Lord said to Moses, I am going to rain bread from heaven for you, and each day the people shall go out and gather enough for that day. In that way I will test them, whether they will follow my instruction or not. On the sixth day, when they prepare what they bring in, it will be twice as much as they gather on other days. So Moses and Aaron said to all the Israelites, In the evening you shall know that it was the Lord who brought you out of the land of Egypt, and in the morning you shall see the glory of the Lord, because he has heard your complaining against the Lord. For what are we, that you complain against us? And Moses said, When the Lord gives you meat to eat in the evening and your fill of bread in the morning, because the Lord has heard the complaining that you utter against him what are we? Your complaining is not against us but against the Lord. Then Moses said to Aaron, Say to the whole congregation of the Israelites, Draw near to the Lord, for he has heard your complaining. And as Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of the Israelites, they looked toward the wilderness, and the glory of the Lord appeared in the cloud. The 3

4 Lord spoke to Moses and said, I have heard the complaining of the Israelites; say to them, At twilight you shall eat meat, and in the morning, you shall have your fill of bread; then you shall know that I am the Lord your God. In the evening quails came up and covered the camp; and in the morning, there was a layer of dew around the camp. When the layer of dew lifted, there on the surface of the wilderness was a fine flaky substance, as fine as frost on the ground. When the Israelites saw it, they said to one another, What is it? For they did not know what it was. Moses said to them, It is the bread that the Lord has given you to eat. Reader The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. The congregation stands. Second Lesson Matthew 20:1-16 Jesus said, The kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. After agreeing with the laborers for the usual daily wage, he sent them into his vineyard. When he went out about nine o clock, he saw others standing idle in the marketplace; and he said to them, You also go into the vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right. So they went. When he went out again about noon and about three o clock, he did the same. And about five o clock he went out and found others standing around; and he said to them, Why are you standing here idle all day? They said to him, Because no one has hired us. He said to them, You also go into the vineyard. When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his manager, Call the laborers and give them their pay, beginning with the last and then going to the first. When those hired about five o clock came, each of them received the usual daily wage. Now when the first came, they thought they would receive more; but each of them also received the usual daily wage. And when they received it, they grumbled against the landowner, saying, These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat. But he replied to one of them, Friend, I am doing you no wrong; did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage? Take what belongs to you and go; I choose to give to this last the same as I give to you. Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or are you envious because I am generous? Burl Salmon A brief period of silence follows the Homily. Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. 4

5 He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Brothers and Sisters in Christ Jesus, we are all baptized by the one Spirit into one Body, and given gifts for a variety of ministries for the common good. Our purpose is to commission these persons in the Name of God and of this congregation as ministers in all of Bethesda s ministries. Sponsors Ministers Ministers Sponsors All The Peace Are these persons you present prepared by a commitment to Christ as Lord, by regular attendance at worship, and by the knowledge of their duties, to exercise their ministry to the honor of God, and the well being of his Church? I believe they are. You have been called to a ministry in this congregation. Will you, as long as you are engaged in this work, perform it with diligence? I will. Will you faithfully and reverently execute the duties of your ministry to the honor of God, and the benefit of the members of this congregation? I will. I present to you these persons to be admitted as Ministers in this congregation. There are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of working, but it is the same God who inspires them all in everyone. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly: Do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus. Let us pray. Communion In the Episcopal Church, all baptized Christians are encouraged to receive communion. This is the Lord s table. It is the Lord who invites you. It is his wish that those who want him should meet him here. During communion, please come forward at the direction of the ushers, to the high altar or to the chapel altar, filling in at the altar rail from right to left, and either kneeling or standing to receive. For those who prefer not to use the steps, please either go to the chapel or request from an usher that communion be brought to you in your pew. Our custom in the Episcopal Church is to receive both elements by putting hands forward, palms crossed and facing upward to receive the bread, and by guiding the chalice lightly to receive the wine. Please note that receiving just the bread or wine alone is fully receiving communion. If you would like to receive a blessing instead, simply cross your arms across your chest. Gluten-free wafers are available at the high altar; let the priest know when you go up to receive. 11 Announcements for Sunday, September 24 Blessing of the Animals Next Sunday, October 1 9:00 a.m. In celebration of the Feast of St. Francis, we invite you to join us at 9:00 a.m. for a Morning Prayer service with the Blessing of the Animals. For those who wish, Communion is offered at the end of the 9:00 a.m. service. We encourage you to bring your pets to the service for them to be blessed. Please gather in the Garth with your pets at 8:45 a.m. The youth will be helping to bag donated food for local shelters to support homeless pets and pet owners.
