1 January 20, 2013 Tone 8, Eothinon 11 30th Sunday after Pentecost and St. Euthymius On this day, we commemorate: Venerable Euthymius the Great; New-martyr Zachariah of Morea Divine Liturgy EPISTLE II Corinthians 4:6-15 (St Euthymios Jan. 20 [Same as 15th Sunday after Pentecost]) The saints shall rejoice in glory. Sing to the Lord a new song. The Reading is from Saint Paul s Second Letter to the Corinthians BRETHREN, it is the God who said, Let light shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ. But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, to show that the transcendent power belongs to God and not to us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. For while we live we are always being given up to death for Jesus sake, so that the life of Jesus may be manifested in our mortal flesh. So death is at work in us, but life in you. Since we have the same spirit of faith as he had who wrote, I believed, and so I spoke, We too believed, and so we speak, knowing that he who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and bring us with you into his presence. For it is all for your sake, so that as grace extends to more and more people it may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God. GOSPEL Luke 17:12-19 AT THAT TIME: As he entered a village, he was met by ten lepers, who stood at a distance and lifted up their voices and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us. When he saw them he said to them, Go and show yourselves to the priests. And as they went they were cleansed. Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice; and he fell on his face at Jesus feet, giving him thanks. Now he was a Samaritan. Then said Jesus, Were not ten cleansed? Where are the nine? Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner? And he said to him, Rise and go your way; your faith has made you well. The Grace of God and Practicing the Commandments St. Symeon the New Theologian The roof of any house stands upon the foundations and the rest of the structure. The foundations themselves are laid in order to carry the roof. This is both useful and necessary, for the roof cannot stand without the foundations and the foundations are absolutely useless without the roof - no help to any living creature. In the same way the grace of God is preserved by the practice of the commandments, and the observance of these commandments is laid down like foundations through the gift of God. The grace of the Spirit cannot remain with us without the practice of the commandments, but the practice of the commandments is of no help or advantage to us without the grace of God. PHILIP) and Charleston, Oakland and the Mid-Atlantic. 6 Summer Camping Program Volunteer at Antiochian Village Antiochian Village Volunteer Staff are the backbone of the Summer Camping program. Their work involves all the behind the scenes preparations as well as the post event clean up and even a few things in between. Volunteer staff jobs include: assist camper-waiters in table set-up; cleanup during meals; set up and serve soda, candy, and ice cream during Gimmie Shop; assist counselors with campers laundry; sort and deliver camper mail; inspect the campers cabins and rate how clean the cabins are kept. In an effort to ensure the safety of our campers and in accordance with the guidelines of the American Camp Association, the Volunteer Staff Application process has changed this year. Applicants will be asked to submit two reference forms (one from their parish priest and one from a non-relative adult) and a voluntary disclosure form. Though there might be a little more paper work for the applicant, we feel that through this process, we will be fulfilling our obligation to ensure the safety of our campers and staff. Being a volunteer staff member is a labor of love, as there is no reward other than knowing you had a hand in making the campers and counselors time they spent at camp the best it could be. In addition to our internet radio broadcast, we are looking to grow our video broadcast to share the visual beauty of our faith, and we have launched a new On-Line Learning Program to allow people to join in from any location to learn about our sacred faith. These projects cannot be done without your financial support. 7 OCF offers interesting programs for college students Orthodox Christian Fellowship (OCF) presents upcoming Donations are College Conference and Real Break programs. The Real Break appreciated: program provides an alternative to the traditional Spring make check payable to Christian Break. It exists to provide the most authentic experience possible, modeled as a full Christian lifestyle, which includes Orthodox Fellowship (memo: fellowship, prayer within community, witness and service. OCF organizes both domestic and international trips to give RB 2013) and college students the opportunity to serve those less fortunate mail it to St. and to do something real for themselves and for God. OCF s Real Break has been running since 2000 with over 1,000 students participating in these life-changing trips.
