Sit with the passage as one would with a good friend- not just thinking or analyzing, but instead remaining in a quiet, listening spirit, so the word can nurture and challenge you. 2 Dear Parishioners: As a high school basketball coach, John Wooden created a thank you rule for his players. Every time a player scored, he was required to acknowledge the person on the team who had assisted. Of course, some of the players thought this was a silly rule that would take too much time away from the game. But Wooden explained to his team that a simple gesture like a nod, a thumbs-up, or a wink would take them less than a second. Wooden believed that if you didn t show your appreciation to others, they d have no way of knowing their contributions were recognized. And without recognition, people start to pull back both from performing and from cooperating with others. It s a key element of team work and success. So the next time you need to foster a sense of cohesiveness among a team or group, remember John Wooden s philosophy. Gratitude takes almost no time to convey but can have a tremendous impact on achievement.* * Adapted from The Essential Wooden, John Wooden and Steve Jamison, McGraw-Hill, 2007 Monsignor Luca THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK Don t pray when it rains if you don t pray when the sun shines. 3 WEEKLY FINANCIAL REPORT Preserving our Treasured Legacy Campaign: SECOND COLLECTIONS This week Special Care for Diocesan Priests January 24 th /25 th -Building Fund STEWARDSHIP MESSAGE Christian stewardship begins with the call to discipleship and today s readings offer three stories about discipleship. In the Gospel, Jesus asks his followers, What are you looking for? This is a very good question for us to ask ourselves. What are we looking for in Christ Jesus? What is it we want by following Him -- to become a steward of His blessings, to serve Him in some way or is it something else? Please consider making a sacrificial pledge to this campaign that will enable us to bring down the mortgage of our new Church and Pastoral Center. 1. If you gave to the Heritage of Hope Campaign, which ended in 2001, consider making a pledge to the Legacy Campaign. Or 2. If you are nearing the end of your payment to t h e Legacy Campaign, consider extending your pledge for another year or two. Or 3. If you are new to the parish or were unable to make a pledge in the past, consider doing your part now by making a pledge now. Everyone is invited and encouraged to support and participate in this important time in the life of our parish. For additional information contact the parish office at Thanks sincerely to all who have been supportive. SAINT LOUIS LEGACY LEAGUE TIP OF THE WEEK January is National Get Organized Month. MARCH FOR LIFE National Prayer Vigil Mass: Join our cardinals, bishops, priests, sisters, deacons, seminarians and others throughout our country for this inspiring prolife vigil Mass on Wednesday, Jan. 21 st at 7 PM at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC. For the complete National Prayer Vigil for Life Schedule go to March for Life Convention: On Wednesday, Jan. 21 st from 2 5 PM, the March for Life Convention will be held at the Hyatt-Regency Washington on Capitol Hill. Many outstanding speakers will educate us on the current prolife issues. Be sure to visit the exhibits while you are at the Convention. To sign up for the Convention or Rose Dinner go to What is FOCA?: FOCA, the Freedom of Choice Act establishes abortion as a fundamental right throughout the nine months of pregnancy and forbids any law or policy that could interfere with that right or discriminate against it in public funding and programs. If FOCA became law, hundreds of reasonable, widely supported, and constitutionally sound abortion regulations now in place would be invalidated. Gone would be laws providing for informed consent, and parental consent or notification in the case of minors. Laws protecting women from unsafe abortion clinics and from abortion practitioners who are not physicians would be overridden. Restrictions on partial-birth and other late-term abortions would be eliminated. FOCA would knock down laws protecting the conscience rights of nurses, doctors and hospitals with moral objections to abortion, and force taxpayers to fund abortions throughout the United States. We cannot let this happen! (To read the entire article, go to check out Pro-Life, Abortion, and Newsletter) PARISH OFFICE HOURS For your convenience the Parish Office is open Monday thru Friday from 9 AM 8:30 PM, Saturday from 9 AM-6 PM and Sunday 9 AM 3 PM. YOUTH DIRECTOR S COMMENTS YOUTH DIRECTOR S COMMENTS: JANUARY In one of my recent hiking adventures, this time at Watkins Mill in Montgomery County, I came across a large herd of deer. Not wanting to startle them too much since we were close to a highway, I began singing which in turn startled them greatly! I then stood still, just watching and waiting, and I noticed or re-noticed something about deer. As they watched me, they stood completely still and, when I didn t move at all, a few of them looked away. As has been the case before, it seems as though the ones who first look away are those in the back then as the front line keeps watch, the ones in the back move along and take over the lead. It is only after the biggest one deems every other deer safe that it moves along. Interesting Not sure if this is scientifically true of all deer, but it is an observation, one which can probably serve as a reflection. Wouldn t it be great if humans were always like that? The Church, the physical Body of Christ on earth, is a community of people who should be committed to watching backs, helping out when needed, generally serving as a family. St. Louis does a pretty good job of watching out for those in need, both here in this county, and in the world around us. But, there is always a challenge to keep watch and to make sure that the love of Jesus is offered through us to those who most desperately need it. I LL BE PRAYING FOR YOU! 6 THE ARCHBISHOP S LENTEN APPEAL IS NOW THE ARCHBISHOP S ANNUAL APPEAL DO EVERYTHING FOR THE GLORY OF GOD (1 COR. 10:31 11:1) The Archbishop has approved changing the name of the Archbishop s Lenten Appeal to the Archbishop s Annual Appeal. The campaign will now take place prior to Lent each year so that the Appeal does not interfere with Lenten liturgies. Many of our parishioners either have or soon will receive a mailing from Archbishop O Brien. He will ask that you make a pledge to the 2009 Archbishop s Annual Appeal. The Appeal not only funds the operations of the Archdiocese, it funds services that are of great help to the ministries here in our parish. This year, the theme of the Appeal is, Do everything for the glory of God. Clearly, everything that we do to live out our faith gives glory to God. Our contributions to our parish and our Archdiocese multiply the glory that we give to our God by enabling ministries and services that touch thousands of lives. Our parish receives 25% of each dollar contributed up to our goal of $184, Then, we receive 50% of the additional funds received. This year, we will commit our parish rebates to our sister parishes in Western Maryland, St. Ambrose in Baltimore City, The Sisters Academy, and the Parish Family Emergency Fund Please answer the Archbishop s request and make a generous pledge. All pledges can be billed in ten monthly installments. Thank you in advance for your support. ST VINCENT de PAUL SOCIETY: If you have a clothing donation, you may drop your items into the blue St. Vincent de Paul Clothing Bin located in the rear of the parking lot by the Maintenance Barn. If you need to obtain a receipt for your clothing donations, you need to call St. Vincent de Paul directly at Clothing items should be placed in sturdy plastic bags and tied securely and then placed in the bin, making sure that the bags are pushed up and over the inside ledge. 15-gallon trash bags fit well in the clothing bin drop slot. This is a wonderful opportunity for used clothing in good condition to be distributed to the poor. It would be regrettable should there be the need to remove the bin from the St. Louis Campus. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. WORLD MARRIAGE MASS WITH ARCHBISHOP O BRIEN All married couples are invited to a special Mass and reception at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen in Baltimore, Sunday, February 8th at 3 PM.
