2 The Holy Land Dear Pilgrims I am delighted and excited to be offering this pilgrimage to the Holy Land and I hope and pray you will join me on this amazing journey of discovery and faith. To tread the roads that Jesus trod, to walk in the hills where he played as a child, to sail on the sea he calmed, to drink from the well of Jacob and to walk in his footsteps to Jerusalem and beyond is a truly remarkable experience and one that will stay with you for life. But, we come not just to worship and engage with our faith in this fascinating and holy place. We come also to see what life is like today; to see how this place matters to Christian, Jew and Muslim and to face the reality of division and occupation. We will visit where Jesus wept over Jerusalem and we may well weep too. We will visit places where Christians are living out their faith in remarkable ways and we will see the rich variety of Christian worship from around the world. So, let us journey to this place, this place where the world was changed forever and where God became human and where the empty tomb was discovered. 3 Day 1, Tuesday 23 January We gather at London Heathrow Airport to join a morning flight to Tel Aviv. On arrival we will be met by our guide and then driven to Bethlehem and our hotel in Manger Square. After checking in we will visit the Church of the Holy Nativity, pray Evening Prayer before dining together in Bethlehem. Day 2, Wednesday 24 January After an early breakfast we begin exploring the places associated with the birth of Jesus and get a sense of the lives of modern-day Christians in Bethlehem. We will visit sections of the huge 9-metre high separation wall and learn of the families it has divided. If permitted we will visit a refugee camp. We then visit the places associated with the Day 3, Thursday 25 January Leaving Bethlehem after breakfast we visit Herodion, a fortified mountain palace built by Herod and possibly where he was buried. We then continue to Jerusalem visiting the ruins of Kathisma, a traditional site where Mary rested on her way to Bethlehem, before proceeding to the summit of the Mount of Olives and the start of the traditional Palm Sunday procession. From there we will continue to the Pater Noster Convent, before walking down the Mount of Olives to visit the Church of Dominus Flevit, which commemorates the site where Jesus wept over the destruction of Jerusalem, the Church of All Nations and the Garden of Gethsemane. After a break for lunch we will descend underground to visit the amazing Western Wall tunnels, before checking in to our hotel in Jerusalem situated within the Old City. After dinner a guest will speak to us on the work of Sabeel in the Holy Land. Overnight stay in Jerusalem. birth of Jesus. We will visit the Shepherds Fields where we will celebrate Mass before continuing to the Church of the Nativity and the Milk Grotto. In the afternoon we visit Tent of Nations, an environmental farm in the Palestinian West Bank and also visit the wine-making Cremisan Valley. Dinner and overnight stay in Bethlehem.

4 Day 4, Friday 26 January We will begin the day at the beautiful Crusader Church of St. Anne overlooking the Pools of Bethesda, before visiting the Convent of the Sisters of Zion built on the foundations of the Antonia Fortress, the Roman Garrison of Jerusalem. After a celebration of the Eucharist we visit the recently-excavated first century stone pavement (Gabbatha in the gospels) to follow the Way of the Cross along the Via Dolorosa to Calvary enshrined within the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. After a break for lunch we will visit Mount Zion to see the traditional site of the Room of the Last Supper, the beautiful Abbey of the Dormition and the Church of St. Peter in Gallicantu for Evening Prayer. There we will view the excavated Roman pathway and steps that lead up from the Old City. Day 5, Saturday 27 January This morning we leave Jerusalem after breakfast and drive east to the Jordan valley to visit Qasr al Yehud, the baptismal site on the River Jordan, near the site where John baptised Jesus and where we will have an opportunity to renew our baptismal vows. We then proceed to view the Mount of Temptation which overlooks the green and fertile area of Jericho where we will break for lunch. In the afternoon we drive along the shores of the Dead Sea to visit Mount Masada, a World Heritage site and scene of the last stand by Jewish patriots against the Roman army in 73AD. We then proceed to Qumran, the site where the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered by a Bedouin shepherd in Excavations uncovered the nearby Essene Monastery, where the Scrolls may have originated. We end our day relaxing in the unique mineral-laden waters of the Dead

5 Day 5 continued Sea before finally returning to Jerusalem and our hotel. Dinner and overnight stay in Jerusalem. Day 6, Sunday 28 January This morning we join members of the local community for the Eucharist at St. George s Anglican Cathedral followed by a tour of the College. After a break for lunch pilgrims can choose to spend the afternoon at the Israel Museum or Yad Veshem, the Holocaust memorial centre. We return to our hotel for dinner and overnight stay. Communion. We will drive north through the heart of the West Bank noting as we drive some of the facts on the ground about the occupation. Our first visit is to the Greek Orthodox Church in Nablus which houses Jacob s Well, where the Fourth Gospel tells us of Jesus encounter with the woman drawing water. We continue through the hills of Samaria to Sebaste (Sebastia), a city destroyed by Alexander the Great. Pompey rebuilt it and Augustus bestowed it upon Herod the Great in 27BC. It was here that Salome danced and asked for the head of John the Baptist and it is here that his decapitated body was laid to rest. After a break for a traditional Palestinian lunch we continue to the Inn of the Samaritan with its mosaics museum. We then continue on to the Sea of Galilee and our hotel, situated on the shores of the lake. Dinner and overnight stay by the Sea of Galilee. Day 7, Monday 29 January After breakfast we leave Jerusalem and head to Abu Ghosh, one of the sites believed to be Emmaus, where we will celebrate Holy

6 Day 8, Tuesday 30 January After breakfast we will drive across the fertile Jezreel valley, the Biblical scene of Armageddon to the summit of Mount Tabor. After a Eucharist on mountain which commemorates the Transfiguration of Jesus before Peter, James and John we will continue to Cana, the site of Jesus first sign. Finally we visit Nazareth, the town where Jesus grew up to visit the Church of the Annunciation and the Old Synagogue- Church. We will return to our Galilee hotel in the late afternoon. Dinner and overnight stay by the Sea of Galilee. on the Sea of Galilee to Nof Ginosar, to see the First Century fishing boat. Then we will visit the excavations at Magdala, the town of Jesus s friend Mary Magdalene where a beautiful church is built on the shores of the lake. We will celebrate mass there before returning to our hotel. Farewell dinner and overnight stay by the Sea of Galilee. Day 9, Wednesday 31 January We start our day at the summit of the Mount of Beatitudes overlooking the places where Jesus lived and worked. We will (if permitted) walk down the hillside to Tabgha to visit the Church of the Loaves and Fishes. We will then drive to the ancient fishing village of Capernaum, the centre of Jesus Galilean Ministry. We then break for a St Peter s fish lunch. In the afternoon we sail Day 10, Thursday 1 February After breakfast we celebrate the Eucharist at the Church of Peter s Primacy before leaving the rolling hills of Galilee and drive west to the Mediterranean shoreline. We continue south to Roman and Crusader city-port of Caesarea Maritima. It was here where Paul was held before his trial in Rome and where Peter baptised the centurion. After a break for lunch we proceed to Tel Aviv s Ben Gurion Airport and check-in for our return flight to London. Please note this touring programme may be subject to minor local amendments
