Prior to Mass Preparation Arrival Time Arrive at Mass 30 minutes early. Varies from regular Daily Mass; please consult the Lead Coordinator of 1st Friday of the Month devotion, Henry Gaona, to assist with specific questions regarding the setup for Mass held at the Church.! Lead CM/Sacristan should arrive by 8:00 am. Four Cup Ministers (CM) and one Host Minister (HM) will be serving at this Mass! The Daily Mass schedule will reflect who will serve in each of the five roles. o Lead CM/Sacristan is responsible for the setup for the Liturgy of the Eucharist. o The 2 nd Cup Minister role and the other Cup Ministers are the 3 rd and 4 th Cup Ministers. o Host Minister (HM) role Upon arrival, please check off your name in the sacristy schedule. The schedule is located on the bulletin board in the priest s sacristy. If you are substituting for another Minister, please place your name next to their name. Communion Minister Reserved Seat Signs The Communion Minister (CM) reserved seat signs are located in the priest s sacristy. The CM reserved seat signs are stored inside a yellow file folder located in the first row of the vertical file folder organizer on the countertop closest to the priest s closet. Lead CM/Sacristan should place the CM reserved seat signs and any personal belongings on the chairs in the church, so other individuals will not sit in these reserved seats. Unlock Priest s Sacristy Door The Lead CM/Sacristan should: Check the doorknob on the inside of the priest s sacristy door and unlock it upon arrival for set up.! Prior to the beginning of Mass, the priest will shut the door.! By shutting the door, access is minimized into priest s sacristy during Mass. o However, with the door unlocked, there is flexibility to enter the priest s sacristy as necessary during Mass. Preparation for the Liturgy of the Eucharist The Lead CM/Sacristan role is indicated on the schedule as Lead CM. Last Revised: October 25,

This person sets up the credence table with the proper vessels, host and wine. Tabernacle Key Lead Coordinator of 1st Friday of the Month devotion, Henry Gaona, is responsible for placing the key in the tabernacle and for removing the Lunae. The Lead CM/Sacristan or anyone accessing the tabernacle should genuflect before opening and closing the tabernacle. During Mass, the tabernacle key should be left in the keyhole with the tabernacle door unlocked. Washing Hands Prior to Mass All CMs should wash their hands before mass begins. Lead CM/Sacristan should wash their hands before handling the bread and wine. Please remember that we are preparing a meal. Credence Table Setup & Layout Layout of Vessels & Linens Carrying Tray Use the silver flat carrying tray used for weekend Mass to take items to the credence table. The carrying tray is stored in the work sacristy in the closet on the right side of the sink. Quantities of Vessels & Linens Vessels & Linens:! Daily Mass priest s chalice heavy silver! Daily Mass priest s paten silver! Daily Mass water bowl o Cruets 2 o Chalices Use the pewter silver chalices from the weekend Masses. Chalices are located in the cabinet next to the left side of the sink in work sacristy. o Corporals 2 o Purificators 5 o Towels 1 o Ciboria 1 (used for weekend Masses) The ciboria is stored in the work sacristy in the cabinet to the left of the sink. Last Revised: October 25,

Quantities of Hosts & Wine o Monstrance -1 st Friday Lead Coordinator, Henry Gaona, will be responsible for taking the Monstrance from the cabinet in the priest s sacristy and placing it on the credence table. o Lunae 1 st Friday Lead Coordinator, Henry Gaona, will be responsible for placing the purified Lunae on the countertop in the priest s sacristy. Quantity of Hosts! Small-unconsecrated hosts placed inside priest s paten. o Assess consecrated hosts in the silver ox stackable ciboria in the tabernacle. The ciboriaholds approximately about 250 hosts. o If ciboria is ½ or less add 75 small-unconsecrated hosts inside the priest s paten. If tabernacle has two silver ox ciboria, please inform the priest.! Quantities may need to be adjusted:! He can decide if he would like to distribute two or more consecrated hosts per communicant during Communion. o Adjust to more if church is full. o Adjust to less in the summer months (June/July/August) because fewer people attend 1 st Friday Mass.! Two (2) medium unconsecrated host placed inside the priest s paten. Water & Wine Cruets o The small and medium unconsecrated hosts are located in the dining room freezer. The unconsecrated hosts are stored in a large blue container.! Cruets ¾ full of wine.! Adjust the wine cruet from ¾ full to 2/3 full in the summer months (June/July August).! Adjust the water cruet to only ½ full of water. Church Credence Table Layout Diagram Water Cruet Wine Cruet 5 Purificators Ciboria Monstrance Priest s Chalice Paten Lunae Water Bowl Towel 3 Chalices 2 Corporals Lead CM/Sacristan should use the small laminated diagram card of the church credence table layout used for 1 st Friday of the month Mass. Last Revised: October 25,

The small laminated diagram card has been placed on the credence table to guide you with the layout. Other Setup Items Sacramentary Book Use the large Sacramentary book from the weekend Masses. Lead CM/Sacristan to ask priest to review prior to Mass, then take into the church for Mass. CM Seating See Daily Mass Schedule in Priest s Sacristy for Seating Location! Lead CM/Sacristan, all Cup Ministers and Host Minister should sit on the 2 nd row, next to credence table in the church. The Daily Mass schedule identifies these roles. Light Church Candles o Lead CM/Sacristan should sit on the second row, the chair closest to the aisle and credence table. o All Cup Minister (CM) role The CM identified as the first name on the schedule is the 2 nd Cup Minister.! The 2 nd Cup Minister should sit on the second row, to the left of the CM/Sacristan. The other Cup Ministers are the 3 rd and 4 th Cup Ministers, o Host Minister (HM) role! They should sit to the left of the 2 nd CM on the second row. The Host Minister should sit on the second row, to the left of the last Cup Minister. The six (6) candles (two next to the ambo and four next to the altar) should be lit ten (10) minutes before Mass begins. The Lead CM/Sacristan is responsible for this task. Light altar and ambo candles using either a BIC lighter or the long gold candle lighter / candle extinguisher rod. Hang the rod on the cistern (incense vessel) stand located next to the credence table. Lighting - When lighting the candle, extend lighting taper one inch or one and ½ inch out from candle lighter before lighting. It helps to have the taper longer, so you can light the Easter candle more easily. Last Revised: October 25,

Extinguishing Flame at the End of Taper Draw candle lighter toward you and pull taper into its metal stem, snuffing out the flame. Once snuffed out, push taper back up to ensure that the wax does not stick in the closed position. This will prevent wax buildup and clogging at the end of the taper. To ensure taper is completely extinguished do this process twice. Candle Wax If the melted wax covers the candlewicks or if a candle will not remain lit due to excess candle wax: Ask Daily Mass Coordinator or Lead Coordinator of 1st Friday of the Month devotion, Henry Gaona, to assist you with removing the wax from the candle. Lectionary Book Lead CM/Sacristan, You are not responsible for placing the Lectionary Book on the ambo. Mass Intention Paper Lead CM/Sacristan, You are not responsible to place the Mass Intention on the ambo. Persons Using Walkers or Wheelchairs Lead CM/Sacristan there are times that we have individuals at Mass who use a walker or are in a wheelchair. Prior to Mass, if you observe an individual who is physically challenged (uses a walker or uses a wheelchair) you might want to ask them if they would like the priest to come distribute Holy Communion to them at their seat.! Please make the priest aware of this individual and where they are sitting before Mass begins. One (1) Cup Minister needs to follow the Host Minister to offer this communicant the Precious Blood. After Setup Process Once Cup Ministers once setup has been completed, please make every effort to leave the priest by himself in the priest s sacristy so that he may prepare spiritually for Mass. During the Mass Opening Prayer Altar Server The Altar Server should sit in the assembly on the first row on the right side of the worship space; to have access to assist the priest with holding the Sacramentary book. If no Altar Server serving at Mass, then the Lead CM/Sacristan should assist the priest with the Sacramentary book. The Lead CM/Sacristan should sit on the second row, the chair closest to the aisle and credence table. Last Revised: October 25,

Sacramentary Book How should the Sacramentary book be brought up to the priest? The Sacramentary book should be brought closed; the priest will open to the appropriate section. Where should the Altar Server stand while holding the Sacramentary book? For Fr. Danny please stand directly in front of him or slightly off to the side. If you are very tall, please stand slightly to the side. For Fr. Uche please stand to the side, not in front of him. Liturgy of the Eucharist Prepare the Gifts on the Altar If two Altar Servers are at Mass, the Lead CM/Sacristan does not need to assist. If one Altar Server is present at Mass, then Lead CM/Sacristan will need to assist the Altar Server. If no Altar Server is present at Mass, both Cup Ministers will become Servers and will need to assist with the preparation of the gifts on the altar.! The CM identified as the first name on the schedule is the 2 nd Cup Minister. Setting the Vessels & Linens on the Altar Setting the altar varies in the church versus the chapel because there are more items to take to the altar. Lead CM/Sacristan should provide guidance and assistance to the Altar Servers at the credence table.! The Lead CM/Sacristan does not need to assist at the altar. They simply need to guide the Altar Servers especially in the selection of the vessels or linens. The credence table is farther away in the church than the chapel, so it will take longer to setup the altar. Church Credence Table Layout Diagram Taking Vessels and Linens to the Altar - Five-Step Process Use the chart and the Altar Preparation steps to set the altar. Water Cruet Wine Cruet 5 Purificators Ciboria Monstrance 4 Priest s Chalice Paten Lunae Water Bowl Towels 3 Chalices 2 Corporals Last Revised: October 25,

Altar Preparation Assist with steps to place the vessels and linens on the altar. The layout chart above identifies five (5) sections. Each section is a step that the Servers need to perform as outlined below.! Step 1: 1 st Server: Retrieve the Sacramentary book and the two corporals and places these items on the altar. o Place the first corporal flat at the center of the altar, still folded. Never flick a corporal open in midair, it shows a lack of respect for the most sacred altar linen. Unfold it, first to your left, then to your right, thus revealing three squares. Unfold the section farthest from you, away from yourself, thus making six squares visible. o Finally, unfold the crease that is nearest to you, towards yourself, thus making all nine squares visible. So the steps are Left, Right, Top, Bottom to unfold the corporal o Then place the second corporal to the right of the main corporal. Unfold the same as the first corporal. The two corporals will overlap to ensure that particles or remnants of Our Lord do not fall onto the altar linen. o Place the Sacramentary book on top of the corporal. Place book in the center of the altar for Fr. Danny. Place the book to the left side of the altar for Fr. Uche.! Do not open the Sacramentary book. o Head back to the credence table.! Step 2: 2 nd Server: Retrieve the priest s chalice and paten and places these items on the altar. o Place the priest s chalice and paten side by side on the center of the corporal, with the chalice to the right. The priest will adjust as necessary.! Step 3: 1 st Server: Retrieve 2 nd chalice and 3 rd chalice and place on the altar. o 2 nd chalice in front of the priest s chalice, and the 3 rd chalice next to the right 2 nd chalice.! Step 4: 2 nd Server: Retrieve 4 th chalice, the wine cruet and five purificators (place on top of the wine cruet to free hands to carry the other two vessels) and place on the altar. o Place the 4 th chalice to the right of the 3 rd chalice, the wine cruet next to the 4 th chalice and the purificators closest to the edge of the altar next to the wine cruet. o Wait at the altar area. Last Revised: October 25,

! The priest will hand the empty wine cruet to the Server closest to him. o If the priest does not hand the Server the empty wine cruet, the Server needs to remove the empty cruet from the altar area. Server a suggestion for holding the empty wine cruet: Server uses his left pinky finger to hold the empty wine cruet by the handle.! If left handed hold cruet with right pinky finger. Cruet Handle o Thus, this will free the other hand to hold the water cruet by the handle. Reverse procedure, if left handed.! Step 5: 1 st Server: Brings the water cruet, water bowl and towel to the altar. o Drape towel over your wrist, so this frees both your hands to carry the other two vessels (water cruet and water bowl). o 1 st Server hand the water cruet to the 2 nd Server. 2 nd Server should hand the priest the water cruet with the cruet handle facing the priest. Wait at the altar area. DO NOT bring up to the altar the ciboria, Lunae, or Monstrance. They remain on the credence table. Altar Preparation Diagram Layout 3 Chalices Sacramentary Book Wine Cruet 5 Purificators Priest Washes His Hands Paten Priest s Chalice When the priest turns towards the Servers, the Server should also move towards the priest so that the hand washing vessels will be close to the priest. The 2 nd Server with the water bowl should place the bowl underneath the priest s hands, so the 1 st Server with the water cruet can pour water over the priest s hands.! The priest then dries his hands with the towel and hands it back to the Server. After the washing of the hands, both Servers should bow towards the priest and then go towards the credence table.! Place the water bowl, towel and water cruet on top of the credence table. Last Revised: October 25,

After Sign of Peace o The towel does not need to be folded neatly, simply place on the credence table. This will allow the priest to continue with the celebration of the Mass as soon as the Servers return to their seats in the assembly. Removing the Silver Ox Ciboria from Tabernacle If a decision is made not to consecrate additional small hosts because the silver ox stackable ciboria in the tabernacle has an abundant quantity of consecrated hosts (at least ½ or greater full with consecrated hosts.) Each ciboria holds approximately 250 hosts. The Lead Coordinator of 1st Friday of the Month devotion, Henry Gaona, will be responsible for bringing the ciboria from the tabernacle to the altar for Communion. Approach the Altar to Receive Communion Lead CM/Sacristan, All Cup Ministers, and Host Minister should approach the altar as soon as you have given and received the sign of peace with those nearest to you. Bring Vessels to the Altar Any Communion Minister should promptly move to the credence table and bring up the ciboria (used at weekend Masses) and Lunae and place on the altar. Do not bring up the Monstrance. Altar Preparation Diagram Layout with Lunae and Ciboria Lunea Sacramentary Book Ciboria 3 Chalices Wine Cruet 5 Purificators Paten Priest s Chalice Distribution of Communion Communion Ministers Mass Stations Layout The Cup Ministers closets to the Host Ministers (HM) should not stand parallel to the Host Minister. See diagram; the X indicates where to stand. Please note that these Cup Ministers (CM) locations are a few steps back from the Host Minister (HM), not parallel. Last Revised: October 25,

If another station opens up then cover that station. If chalice does not have Precious Blood: Place all items on the credence table and be seated.! Do not take any items to the priest s sacristy after Communion. o If chalice has Precious Blood, please wait to consume it after Mass in the priest s sacristy. Do not consume at the credence table area. After Distribution of Communion Communion Ministers Cup Ministers Cup Ministers should place their sacred vessels and purificators on the credence table and be seated.! Do not take empty sacred vessels to the priest s sacristy after Communion. o If chalice has Precious Blood, please wait to consume it after Mass in the priest s sacristy. Do not consume at the credence table area. Last Revised: October 25,

Host Minister The Host Minister will be responsible for taking any extra-consecrated hosts back to the tabernacle.! Stay at the altar, the priest will combine all the consecrated hosts into one flat ciboria. o If the silver ox stackable ciboria is on the altar, the priest will combine all the consecrated hosts into the silver ox stackable ciboria.! An Altar Server will then lead the Host Minister out of the church to the chapel. o Host Minister, remember to raise and elevate the ciboria in front of you. o Then the Altar Server will return to the church once they open the chapel door.! If no Altar Server at Mass, then the Host Minister will proceed to the chapel.! Returning the ciboria in the tabernacle: o When bringing the consecrated hosts to the tabernacle bow before opening the tabernacle, and genuflect after closing the tabernacle. o If the consecrated hosts are in the flat ciboria, please transfer the consecrated hosts into the silver ox stackable ciboria in the tabernacle. o Place the flat ciboria into the priest s sacristy to be purified with the other sacred vessels by the priest, deacon or acolyte. o Host Minister will then return to the church. Cup Minister - Bring Monstrance to the Altar The Lead CM/Sacristan or the 2 nd Cup Minister should bring the Monstrance from the credence table and take it to the altar once the Host Minister has exited or processed out of the worship space. After Mass Corporals! The priest or deacon will take the Lunae with the consecrated host and insert the Lunae into the Monstrance.! Then he will place the Monstrance with the Blessed Sacrament on the center of the altar. Fold the Corporals from the Altar Once the priest sits in his chair, the Altar Server may move towards the altar to fold and collect the corporals and the Sacramentary book. If not, Lead CM/Sacristan should go to the altar after Mass to fold the corporals. Shake the corporals in the sacrarium in the priest s sacristy. When folding the corporal fold inwardly, so to catch the particles or remnants of Our Lord that might have fallen onto the corporal. Last Revised: October 25,

Never shake a corporal open in midair because there might be particles or remnants of Our Lord on the linen. Please show the most respect when folding the corporal. Clean up Retrieve the Sacred Vessels The Lead CM/Sacristan will retrieve the sacred vessels from the credence table in the church and bring them back to the priest s sacristy using the silver carrying tray. Extinguishing Candles after Mass The six candles (two next to ambo and four next to altar) should be blown out using the candle extinguisher by the 2 nd CM. When extinguishing candle, the purpose is not to drown it in its own wax, crush the wick, but rather to cut off the supply of oxygen. Therefore, do not plunge the extinguisher down over the top of the candle, but rather hold it gently over the flame until the candle is out. Clean the Vessels All five Communion Ministers should remain after Mass to wash the vessels. Purification Sacred Vessels After greeting the majority of parishioners, the priest, deacon or formally installed acolyte (e.g. pastoral year seminarian) will enter the priest s sacristy to purify the sacred vessels. They are the only individuals who may purify the sacred vessels. A formally installed acolyte is not always a seminarian.! Barry Cuba our seminarian is a formally installed acolyte. However, Chris Ochoa, Jared Cooke and Ricky Cote are not formally installed acolytes. Rinsing Paten in Sacrarium After purification, rinse the purified paten inside the sacrarium. Then dry the paten and store inside the cabinet. Last Revised: October 25,

Shake Corporal into Sacrarium Ask person purifying if he has shaken the corporals into the sacrarium. If this has not been done:! Open the sacrarium cover/lid.! Then unfold the corporal inside the sacrarium and shake the linen several times to ensure that all remnants or particles of Our Lord fall into the sacrarium. o Rinse the sacrarium with water, and then close the sacrarium cover/lid. o You may then place the corporal in the laundry basket inside the work sacristy. Waiting for Vessels to be Purified While the consummation of the Precious Blood and the purification of the sacred vessels, please refrain from making loud conversation. Please show reverence to Our Lord. Proper Method to Clean the Vessels Wash the Vessels Once the purification process is complete both ministers will wash the vessels. Cruets & Water Bowl Paten Drain the water in the regular sink on the right side and then towel dry the vessels. Rinse and then towel dry. Chalices Wash them with soap and water in the regular commercial sink on the right side. Use only a couple of drops of soap on the sponge because it is difficult to rinse the suds off the vessels. o Do not immerse the chalice into water. Clean the inner and outer rim of the chalices, and then rinse and towel dry them. Linens Place corporal, purificators and towel in the linen container (laundry basket) in the work sacristy. Other Clean Up Guidelines Tabernacle Key Last Revised: October 25,

Lead CM/Sacristan please retrieve tabernacle key and return to priest s sacristy. Place in its proper storage cabinet. Please genuflect before and after removing the key from the tabernacle. Candle Taper on Lighter Needs Replacement Lead CM/Sacristan, if the long gold candle lighter / candle extinguisher rod needs a new taper, please ask the priest, the Daily Mass Coordinator, or the Lead Coordinator of 1st Friday of the Month devotion, Henry Gaona, to assist with adding a new taper to the rod. Tapers are stored in the work sacristy on the left side of the cabinet under the sink. Priest s Chalice and Paten Return priest s chalice and paten in the cabinet in the priest s sacristy. Sacrarium Lid, Lights, and Priest s Sacristy Door Close or flip the sacrarium cover/lid down, and turn off the sink area light. Turn off the lights in the priest s sacristy. Lock and shut the door when finished washing the vessels. Sometimes the priest s sacristy door does not shut on its own.! Shut the priest s door entirely.! If the priest is still using the priest s sacristy and you are done with your clean up duties, ask him if he could shut the door on his way out.! Check the doorknob is on the lock position.
