2 The Episcopal Church of St. Bartholomew the Apostle From Fr. Seth From the Rector Dear friends and parishioners, Things seem to be going along well in our parish. I for one am so grateful to be able to work in this beautiful church filled with really fun and unique people. We are sincerely blessed. I don t mean to toot our own horn, but several visitors have approached me over the summer who have specifically commented on the wonderful spirit of our congregation, and the lack of apparent discord. You deserve the credit for helping these people feel welcomed and at home, great job. There are times when I feel slightly overwhelmed with some tasks that need to happen, but if I only ask, I receive all the help I need for those who call St. Bart s home. One of the tasks that you will be hearing more of very shortly will be our annual stewardship drive. We have set a date for the ingathering to take place on November 13. Again, ideas and help in planning, writing and scheduling have been right at hand. I d like to thank Rolf Dehmel, Merle Moore and Bill Sweet for their generous input and support. By the end of the pledge drive, Mike Willborn will have done his share of work, as well. I d also like to take a moment to thank Fr. Bill Shirey for his organizational talents that were put to the test last month. Our annual women s appreciation dinner was wonderful, although we inadvertently conflicted with the Library s annual event, (sorry about that). The crop walk was a great success with St. Bart s contributing $1, to the cause of hunger relief and clean water for communities near and far. (See page 7 for the write-up of another of Fr. Shirey s favorite projects! Kudos to Fr. Bill and the Men of St. Bart s!) I m hoping for a continued Indian Summer, I m not quite sure I m ready for winter yet, but I m sure we ll manage one way or the other. The Diocesan Convention is the weekend of Oct. 9. I m not sure if I ll be here or not on that Sunday. It is hard to find a substitute when all the priests seem to be in the same place! Have a beautiful fall. God is blessing us in so many ways. 3 Volume 2 Issue 9 THE SENIOR WARDEN WRITES I am joined in this communiqué by the Chairman of the Finance Committee, Howard Marco. A year ago I wrote in the September, 2010 issue of The View about how pleased we were with the response to our "Future of St. Bart s, Possibilities & Realities for Ministry" series of house meetings. We were impressed with the sincerity of those who attended and who so willingly shared their expectations and desires for the future of St. Bart s. We were embarking together on a new path with new leadership as defined by Fr. Seth's clearly articulated vision as our guide. As Howard and I write this October, 2011 article we are filled with overwhelming gratitude for your sincerity, veracity, and personal sacrifice in following through on the promise you made to step up your financial support of St. Bart s in We have witnessed first-hand what it means to "put God first" as you make daily decisions about what is important to you and to your spiritual well being. For some in our parish this manifested itself in the form of committing greater amounts of time and talent where it most benefited the St. Barts community. For others it came in the form of taking an unexpected financial gift and sharing it with St. Barts, making it possible to make badly needed upgrades and repairs to the parish hall kitchen and restrooms. As your Senior Warden and Finance Committee Chairman we are humbled by your generosity and devotion to our loving, caring parish family. We would be remiss if we did not extend a very special "thank you" to our summer resident members. We recognize and very much appreciate the fact that they support not only us but their "home church" as well. I hope all of you are taking time to read the announcements that accompany the bulletin each Sunday and your monthly edition of The View so you may fully appreciate the important work that goes quietly on in the background. Financial and in-kind support for Crossroads Ministry and Pine Ridge Indian Reservation are a couple of examples. Fr. Seth's mentoring and coaching of a youth baseball team and his collaboration with various members of the congregation to plan programs for our ongoing spiritual growth and development also occurs mainly behind the scenes. From the Sr. Warden's perspective I want to take this opportunity to acknowledge and recognize the work of your Vestry that meets monthly to guide the progress and well being of our Parish and its many programs. I also want to extend a "thank you" to the Finance Committee for their contributions to keeping St. Bart s on a sound financial path. In case you are not sure who serves on the finance committee it is Howard Marco - Chairman; Mary Ann Martin; Bill Sweet; Russ Nehrig; and Fr. Seth, Mike Willborn, and me as Ex Officio members. We hope you will take a moment to personally thank them, along with the Vestry, for their service when you see them at church or at parish functions. 5 Volume 2 Issue 9.EVERYONE EVERYWHERE CONFERENCE YMCA OF THE ROCKIES, OCTOBER This exciting conference looking at global and international mission has registrants from 60 plus dioceses and all nine of the Episcopal/Anglican provinces around the world. The Presiding Bishop will be the preacher at the opening Eucharist on Thursday afternoon and Bishop O'Neill will celebrate. The conference will bring to Colorado representatives of virtually all the Episcopal Church's various mission programs, including economic and environmental affairs, Asian-American Ministries, Latino- Hispanic ministries, Black Ministries, Jubilee Ministries, Native American/Indigenous Ministries, Migration Ministries, youth ministries, Episcopal Relief and Development and even the Episcopal News Service." I have been asked to be the local logistics liaison and I need your help as members of the local Episcopal parish. I will be placing sign-up sheets in the narthex and would like to have folks to help as hosts for Jubilee ministry members who may need hospitality, or on site- "go-fers" to assist conference attendees who have special needs or questions There is also a request that we might be able to drive some of the International Visitors to Estes from DIA. Pat Washburn- laypastoral@aol.com or PINE RIDGE UPDATE We now have contacts with two elementary schools in the towns of Porcupine and Kyle, and have set Saturday, October 1st as the date for delivering collected and purchased items. As always, we are grateful for your gifts of materials and cash for the purchase of school supplies. There is still a need for: warm winter clothing (coats, sweaters, gloves, mittens, boots, hats, etc.), toys, sports equipment and children s books Also, one of the schools requested book cases seems their s collapsed when they were moving books! 7 GBS/CIDP FOUNDATION INTERNATIONAL Reprinted from The Communicator, Summer 2011 Volume 2 Issue 9 Think of Raising $5,800 Just by Sitting! Each year since 2008, William Bill Shirey of Estes Park, Colorado has been a great supporter of the GBS/CIDP Foundation International. Bill has organized a fundraiser iin a unique manner. His mission was to find a way for others to participate and bring home the idea that patients with GBS or CIDP may look healthy but can still have problems with walking caused by damage to their nerves. He also wanted to build awareness of these rare syndromes so that others can learn about them. Bill s solution was to have a sit-in. He along with the Men of St. Bart s meet each year to show their support in a clever method. The sitters are asked to get donors to sponsor their sitting. The men will cook and serve breakfast to all of the sitters. The time is spent bringing awareness and support to others while having a lot of fun. Each year Bill s group has grown and so has their support for others who want to find a cure fo GBS or CIDP. The Foundation wants to express gratitude for Bill and his merry band for all their devotion to helping others and bringing awareness along the way. They have been responsible for collecting $1,800 this year and over $5,800 for research, support and advocacy since they began their sit-ins four years ago. They truly demonstrate fellowship for others and we thank them! CROSSROADS MINISTRY Since 1982, when St. Bartholomew s began providing assistance to Estes Park residents following the Lawn Lake flood, our exceptional role in helping our neighbors with needs for daily living has been commendable. The needs of Crossroads clients may vary, but never decrease. Please save this shopping list, and pick an item to bring to Sunday services.
