Divine Mercy Sunday to be observed On February 22, 1931, Our Lord Jesus Christ appeared to a simple nun in a convent in of the Congregation of the sister of Our Lady of Mercy in Cracow, Poland. At Sr. Faustina Kowalaska s canonization in the year 2000, the Late Pope John Paul II declared the Feast of the Divine Mercy to be celebrated on the first Sunday after Easter. Parishioners have two opportunities to participate in Divine Mercy devotions. St. Christopher s Church, Red Hook, will celebrate the feast with Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, this Sunday, April 12, 3:00 p.m., with a Holy Hour and Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. At the National Shrine of Divine Mercy, Stockbridge, Massachusetts (about 45 minutes from Hudson), special activities will be taking place the entire weekend. This Sunday, April 3 rd, there will be a Divine Mercy Solemn Liturgy at 1:00 p.m., and a Solemn Celebration of the Hour of Great Mercy at 3:00 p.m. The faithful are encouraged to participate fully in these celebrations by receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation and receiving Holy Communion on the day of the feast. The ultimate goal of these observances to help us become as merciful to others as the Lord has been to us.

4 Our 2016 Bishop s Appeal How one office serves: ST. BERNARD S SCHOOL OF THEOLOGY & MINISTRY Graduate and Continuing Education This year, St. Bernard s School of Theology and Ministry celebrates twenty six years of service to the Diocese of Albany! During that time more than two hundred women and men have earned master s degrees and are serving God s people in our Diocese and in many other Christian churches. St. Bernard s is fully accredited by the Association of Theological Schools (ATS)and awards degrees of Master of Divinity, Master of Arts in Theological Studies, and Master of Arts in Pastoral Studies. St. Bernard s also welcomes students seeking courses fo rpersonal enrichment. Students who lack a bachelor s degree are welcome to seek the St. Bernard s Certificate of Graduate Study. Co-Workers in the Vineyard of the Lord, the 2007 publication of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, serves as a foundation for our curriculum. In this manner, we partner with our bishops and with the wider Church in preparing men and women for ministry. With the support of generous donors: Sixty-three students pursued graduate course work in Scripture, Church History, Spiritual Direction, Worship and Sacraments, and other key areas. Fourteen students earned their Master s degrees and are now serving throughout our Diocese. Seven men continued in discernment for ministry as deacons in the Diocese of Albany. For these men and their wives, St. Bernard s is an integral part o ftheir preparation. Hundreds of persons have attended our opening convocations, continuing education offerings, workshops, discernment groups, and summer lectures, all without cost as a part of our ministry to the Diocese. Twenty parishes invited our faculty to be speakers and facilitators; Spring Enrichment and Autumn Diocesan Gathering invited eight o four faculty as speakers and instructors. Our faculty serves as mentors to new pastors, board members for Diaconate Formation, and resource persons throughout the diocese. Students who are active in their parishes will receive up to one-fourth of their tuition funded by the Diocese; in many cases these students receive additional support from their parishes. 5 SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER, SUNDAY OF DIVINE MERCY APRIL 3, 2016 A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE by Bud Ozar Jesus connects PEACE and FORGIVENESS in today s Gospel. In our families we will only experience peace to the extent we forgive one another. Peace is purchased with the currency of forgiveness. When we allow our anger and pride to lock out others, we also lock out peace and harmony. Spring Enrichment 2016 God Always Knocks on the Doors of our Hearts Spring Enrichment will be held at the College of St. Rose on Wednesday, May 18 through riday, May 21. On Saturday, May 21, Spring Enrichment will be held in five siytes around the diocese. This is one of the premier adult faith formation events in our diocese; so don t miss it. This year s schedule make it more accessible for folks who cannot travel to Albany, as well as those who are not available on weekdays. For further information, see or contact Stepehn Mawn at The schedule of courses, workshops, and major presentations can also be found in the March 10th issue of The Evangelist, our diocesan newspaper. For more information about all the interesting presentations, please call the Rectory at , or Mrs. Maura Nedwell at Reflections on today s Scriptures Second Sunday of Easter Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, Peace be with you. The disciples were paralyzed by fear. After the Crucifixion, they had locked themselves in a room and were keeping a low profile. They didn t want to end up how Jesus had ended up. But the Lord stepped right into this paranoia and dispelled it in an instant: The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Although these first Christians were very concerned about preserving their lives, the fact is that living holed up in an attic wasn t a life of much freedom or joy. Jesus wanted his followers to have the fullness of life, but this required trust in him and his promises. As today s Gospel puts it, through the belief that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, you may have life in his name. When we come to really accept who Jesus is, there is no more need for a life of slavery to fear whatever that fear may be, whether it s fear for our health; fear for our reputation; fear for our comfort; or even fear that our sins are too big for forgiveness. Today as we celebrate the feast of Divine Mercy, we remember that God s love is strong enough to conquer the greatest of all human fears: death itself. This confidence leads us to a renewed joy. As Pope Francis wrote in his declaration of this, the Year of Mercy, Mercy is the force that reawakens us to new life and instills in us the courage to look to the future with hope. Once we are firmly established in this hope, we are called to be witnesses of mercy to others. The Holy Father continues with a challenge for all of us, Jesus asks us also to forgive and to give. To be instruments of mercy because it was we who first received mercy from God. Gina Loehr Trash & Treasure Donations Our next Trash and Treasure sale is scheduled for June. We are now accepting new and lightly used household items and furnishings.
