We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. PRAY AND FAST FOR VOCATIONS If You Are Discerning a Call to the Priesthood, you are invited to contact the Diocese of Metuchen Office of Vocations at vocations@diometuchen.org or call Fr. Jason Pavich, Vocation Director, at VOCATIONS PRAYER Gentle God, You call us by name and lead us to life. Through Baptism You commission us to proclaim the Good News. Bless and strengthen all men and women, lay and ordained, who serve in the Church. Guide and give wisdom to those discerning their vocation. Enrich our Church with dedicated married and single people, with deacons, priests and religious. Filled with joy and Your Holy Spirit may we follow Jesus, our Good Shepherd, now and always. Amen. For everything there is a season and a time for every purpose under heaven... a time to heal... for the sick of our Parish and especially for Mary Wagner, Fr. John Morley, Barbara Sewing a time to die... Dino Amato, AnnMarie Wood...come away by yourselves to a lonely place and rest awhile. -Mark 6: 31 Do you spend time, every day, alone and in silence listening to how God is calling you? If not, you are missing out on a wonderful opportunity to develop a more personal relationship with Him. Unless we talk and more importantly, listen to God every day, how else will we know how He is calling us? Consider making a retreat this year, spend some alone time with God. "Among important issues involving the dignity of human life with which the Church is concerned, abortion necessarily plays a central role. Abortion, the direct killing of an innocent human being, is always gravely immoral (The Gospel of Life, no. 57); its victims are the most vulnerable and defenseless members of the human family. It is imperative that those who are called to serve the least among us give urgent attention and priority to this issue of justice : US Bishops Pastoral Plan for Pro-life Activities: A Campaign in Support of Life PROTECT LIFE! Father we praise You for the work of Your hands. For human life, made in Your image, for the gift of Your Son Who saved our nature, for the Power of Your Spirit, Who fills our hearts, for all You bestow upon us, we praise You, we thank You, and we bless You. Help us to protect the life you gave us; support the aged, guide the young, lift up the failing, and heal the sick. To all people grant Your truth in its fullness. May those who are yet unborn soon see the light of day and live to give You glory through Christ our Lord. Amen. Contact Your Legislators to Oppose Assisted Suicide On March 12, the Assembly Judiciary Committee released the Aid in Dying for the Terminally Ill Act (A1504). The bill would allow physicians to prescribe drugs to end the lives of terminally ill individuals considered to have six months to live. In those states that have passed assisted suicide bills, insurance companies have denied individuals expensive healthcare coverage but offered them low cost drugs to end their life. In an era of cost control and managed care, patients with lingering illnesses may be branded as a financial liability for the insurance company, and decisions to encourage death could be driven by reducing costs. Please contact your state legislators today and tell them that you oppose A1504/S1072. For information, visit:

3 SUNDAY READINGS First Reading - Jeremiah 23: 1-6 Second Reading - Ephesians 2: Gospel - Mark 6: Rest in the Lord For several weeks we have listened to readings that have recounted just how arduous the work of prophets and disciples can be. In today s Gospel, the Lord Jesus listens to the reports of those He had sent out two by two to minister to the people. After the apostles reported what they had done, Jesus, recognizing their fatigue, says, Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest awhile (Mark 6:31). Perhaps this is what the Lord is telling His disciples in the year 2018 as well. We need to pause on our journey of discipleship and simply rest in the Lord. Sunday Mass provides many opportunities for quiet times, particularly during the periods of silence following the readings. Why not take the time today to allow the saving word of the Lord to penetrate your heart during those silent times? Ask the Lord to renew you in body, mind, and spirit for the arduous work of discipleship. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Mi 6: 1-4, 6-8; Mt 12: Tuesday: Mi 7: 14-15, 18-20; Mt 12: Wednesday: 2 Cor 4: 7-15; Mt 20: Thursday: Jer 2: 1-3, 7-8, 12-13; Mt 13: Friday: Jer 3: 14-17; Mt 13: Saturday: Jer 7: 1-11; Mt 13: Sunday: 2 Kgs 4: 42-44; Eph 4: 1-6; Jn 6: 1-15 OFFERTORY COLLECTION July 15, 2018 $5103 $5256 (2017) So we though many, are one body in Christ and individually parts of one another. Since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us exercise them. -Romans 12: 5-6 TRAVELING THIS SUMMER! We sincerely thank our parishioners who mail or deliver their weekly donation envelopes to the Parish Office while outof-town or on vacation during the Summer. As many of you understand, our Parish still has expenses and obligations to take care of so it is very helpful to be able to rely on your continued support even when you cannot personally attend Mass here. St. Joseph School National Junior Honor Society has extended their SHOE DRIVE through Sunday, July 29. Pair of new shoes and gently worn shoes may be dropped off at St. Joseph School or placed in the barrel marked Shoe Donations located in the narthex. Supplies needed include paper, graph paper, pencils, pens (red, blue, black) binders, folders, crayons, Elmer s glue, glue sticks, rulers, calculators, and of course backpacks. As always, your generosity is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

4 Today s Gospel gives us a glimpse of how much Jesus loves us. The psalm tells us that the Lord is our Shepherd and we can rest in Him. We hear that He guides us and walks us through evil; giving us courage. Isn't there someone in your life who would like to know more about a God Who loves us that much? Invite your relative or your friend to an RCIA INQUIRY SESSION. Inquiry Sessions do not ask for commitments. Inquiry sessions are a place to ask questions about God or about the Catholic Faith. Inquiry Sessions are opened to anyone who is unbaptized, baptized into another Christian Denomination or baptized Catholic but has not received BOTH sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist. Inquiry sessions will continue throughout the Summer. The Pieta Lamp burns for the souls in purgatory. The St. Joseph Lamp burns for the protection of all human life, born and unborn. Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament has His hands full of graces and He is ready to bestow them on anyone who asks for them. -St. Peter of Alcantara EUCHARISTIC ADORATION, closing with Benediction, is held each Thursday, 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., in the Church Chapel. Prayer and meditation before our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament are great ways to spend some special time with Him. You can ask Him for graces for yourself or for loved ones, reflect on His Word, or just keep Him company. NATURAL FAMILY PLANNING WEEK JULY This year s theme, Generations of Love, joyfully commemorates the 50 th Anniversary and legacy of Humanae Vitae, inviting a reflection on how openness to God s plan for married love and responsible parenthood creates the opportunity for great fruit in the lives of married couples and their families, a legacy of love for generations to come. The Church teaches that the sacrament of marriage symbolizes Christ's relationship with His Church. What is this relationship but one of total, faithful, permanent, and fruitful love! When couples live their vocation according to Church teachings, especially with regard to the transmission of life, many benefits can be reaped. Indeed, married couples who use Natural Family Planning (NFP) report that among these benefits is their mutual growth in holiness and consequent deepening of their respect and awe of God's gifts of human sexuality, marriage and family. These are gifts that call for praise! -United States Conference of Catholic Bishops PRAYER FOR MARRIED COUPLES Almighty and Eternal God, You blessed the union of married couples so that they might reflect the union of Christ with His Church. Look with kindness on them. Renew their marriage covenant, increase Your love in them, and strengthen their bond of peace so that, with their children, they may always rejoice in the gift of Your blessing. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. Silver & Gold Wedding Anniversary Celebration Sunday, October 21 ~ 4:00 PM You are cordially invited to celebrate your 25th or 50th Wedding Anniversary with the Church of Metuchen. Renew your marriage vows with Bishop James F. Checchio at a special Evening Prayer Service in the Cathedral of St. Francis of Assisi, Metuchen. Please register online by logging on to the diocesan website The system will automatically generate a confirmation message with some facts about the event. More specifics will be sent closer to the event. If you are unable to access the website, please contact the Family Life Office at or amatos@diometuchen.org. Even though no fee is required, in the past many Jubilarian couples have given a donation of gratitude to the Church in memory of this special occasion. Donations of Gratitude can be made online or by calling , during business hours. Registration closes on Wednesday, October 3.
