15 TRINITY XVII October 16, 2011 What do you do when you get sick or are injured? For anything of a serious nature you consult a doctor and follow the directions and instructions you are given. And almost surely you don t call the priest fo the Sacrament of Holy Unction. For some time it was thought by many that this sacrament was only for the dying, but the Church has always held Unction as a healing sacrament that should be used whenever we are sick or injured. Our Lord spent much of His ministry healing the sick, and He told His Apostles to go and do like wise. Therefore, when we are sick we should call the priest to annoint us with oil blessed by the bishop and to call upon the healing pwers of our Lord. In this sacrament, as in all the sacraments, our Lord is truly present and will pour upon us His grace. Two of the seven sacraments, Holy Matrimony and Holy Orders, are meant only for those who marry or who become deacons, priests, or bishops. However, the other five sacraments (Baptism, Confirmation, Holy Communion, Penance, and Holy Unction) are given for everyone. Our Lord has given these gifts to us as means of receiving His grace. We can t rationally say, No, thank you, I don t need them.
