My soul hath a desire longing to enter into courts of Lord; my heart my flesh rejoice in living God. Yea, sparrow hath found her an house, swallow a nest, where she may lay her young; even thy altars, O Lord of hosts, my King my God. Blessed are y that dwell in thy house; y will be alway praising e. Blessed in man whose strength is in e; in whose heart are thy ways. Who going through vale of misery use it for a well;
pools are filled with water. They will go from strength to strength, unto God of gods appeareth every one of m in Sion. O Lord God of hosts, hear my prayer; hearken, O God of Jacob. Behold, O God our defender, look upon face of thine anointed. For one day in thy courts is better than a thous. I had rar be a doorkeeper in house of my God, than to dwell in tents of ungodliness. For Lord God is a light defense; Lord will give grace worship; no good thing shall he withhold from m that live a godly life. O Lord God of hosts, blessed is man that putteth his trust in e. DOXOLOGY Sung by congregation, sting Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise God, all creatures here below; Praise God above, ye heavenly host, Creator, Christ, Holy Ghost. Amen. FIRST LESSON Malachi 4:1 2a See, day is coming, burning like an oven, when all arrogant all evildoers will be stubble; day that comes shall burn m up, says Lord of hosts, so that it will leave m neir root nor branch. But for you who revere my name sun of righteousness shall rise, with healing in its wings. 5
ANTHEM Great Is Lord, Op. 67 ( ) Edward Elgar ( ) Great is Lord greatly to be praised in city of our God, in mountain of his holiness; Beautiful in elevation joy of whole earth is mount Zion, on sides of north, city of great king. God hath made himself known in her palaces for a refuge. For lo! The kings assembled mselves, y passed by toger; The saw, n were y amazed; y were dismayed, y hasted away; Trembling took hold of m re pain, as of a woman in travail, As with east wind that breakth ships of Tarshish. As we have heard, so have we seen in city of Lord of hosts, in city of our God: God will establish it forever. We have thought on thy lovingkindness, O God, in midst of thy temple: As is thy name, O God, so is thy praise unto ends of earth; thy right h is full of righteousness. Let mount Zion be glad, let daughters of Judah rejoice, because of thy judgments; Walk about Zion go round about her, tell towers reof, Mark ye well her bulwarks, consider her palaces, that ye may tell it to generation following. For this God is our God forever ever; he will be our guide even unto death. Amen. 6 Psalm 48 (KJV alt.) SECOND LESSON Luke 21:5 19 When some were speaking about temple, how it was adorned with beautiful stones gifts dedicated to God, Jesus said, As for se things that you see, days will come when not one stone will be left upon anor; all will be thrown down. They asked him, Teacher, when will this be, what will be sign that this is about to take place? And he said, Beware that you are not led astray; for many will come in my name say, I am he!, The time is near! Do not go after m. When you hear of wars insurrections, do not be terrified; for se things must take place first, but end will not follow immediately. Then he said to m, Nation will rise against nation, kingdom against kingdom; re will be great earthquakes, in various places famines plagues; re will be dreadful portents great signs from heaven. But before all this occurs, y will arrest you persecute you; y will h you over to synagogues prisons, you will be brought before kings governors because of my name. This will give you an opportunity to testify. So make up your minds not to
prepare your defense in advance; for I will give you words a wisdom that none of your opponents will be able to withst or contradict. You will be betrayed even by parents brors, by relatives friends; y will put some of you to death. You will be hated by all because of my name. But not a hair of your head will perish. By your endurance you will gain your souls. HYMN The congregation seated Day by day, dear Lord, of e three things I pray: to see e more clear ly, love e more dear ly, fol low e more near ly, day by day. THE PRAYERS Here follow several prayers of day. FOR THE PEACE OF THE WORLD O God, you have taught us that world all that is in it is yours; hear us, we pray, as we plead for peace of world. Grant that all nations may seek ways that lead to peace, that dignity of your creation be upheld. Encourage us to share what we have, embolden us to pursue protect that peace which passes all human understing, for sake of Jesus Christ who is our peace. FOR STUDENTS AND SCHOLARS Grant, O Lord, to all students scholars, that y may love that which is worth loving, know that which is worth knowing, praise that which is worthy of praise, seek that which is worth finding. Endow this life of mind with courage, discernment, modesty, grace; in search for that truth which sets us free, grant us wisdom which is found most perfectly in you. 7
FOR THIS UNIVERSITY CHURCH COMMUNITY O God of memory hope, may doors of this church be wide enough to receive all who seek human fellowship divine love, narrow enough to shut out all envy, malice, pride. Here may tempted find help, sorrowful find comfort, fearful courage. Here may indifferent be awakened to new purpose, penitent assured of mercy. And here, may all your children renew ir strength go on ir way in hope joy, thorugh Jesus Christ our Lord. THE LORD S PRAYER In unison: Our Far, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is kingdom, power, glory, for ever ever. Amen. MUSIC NOTES Sir Hubert Parry was born in Bournemouth, Engl, attended Eton College Exeter College, Oxford. A scholar as well as a composer, Parry worked for Sir Henry Groves s new Dictionary of Music Musicians as an editor contributor, in 1883 was appointed Professor of Musical History at Royal College of Music, London, later to become Professor of Music at Oxford University. His music was to have a profound influence on a generation of later composers, including Elgar Vaughan Williams. Parry s six Songs of Farewell were written between , are an intensely personal response to horrors of war; fourth of set, There is an old belief, is a sonorous sixvoice setting of words by Scottish poet, novelist, biographer John Gibson Lockhart. Sir Edward Elgar was born near Worcester in west of Engl, first made a living as a freelance musician, teacher, conductor. His breakthrough as a composer came with Imperial March (1897), his reputation solidified with Enigma Variations (1899) The Dream of Gerontius (1900). Public recognition soon followed: he composed music for coronation of King Edward VII in 1902, was awarded a knighthood in 1904, a baronetcy in Much of music for which Elgar is remembered today was written before outbreak of Great War: war of deeply affected composer diminished his creative inspiration energy. He would write little for rest of his life, few notable works, with exception of melancholic Cello Concerto of Great Is Lord is a setting of Psalm 48 was first performed in Westminster Abbey in July The work opens with a gr statement from tenors basses, which leads into an ereal answer from upper voices, followed by a combination of both mes. There is an abrupt change of mood for section beginning For, lo! The kings assembled mselves which leads into a passage of quasirecitative at words As we have heard. Elgar sets text We have thought on Thy lovingkindness as a lyrical baritone solo, which is followed by an undulating passage at words Let mount Zion be glad before return of opening material heralding work s majestic conclusion. Parry s first set of chorale preludes, written around same time as Great Is Lord, is based on common hymns of day. Today s prelude is based on hymn tune St. Anne, first hymn sung in today s service. Elgar s set of Vesper Voluntaries was written 14
at Oakls, South London, where Elgar his wife spent winter following ir marriage in May of 1889; this morning s postlude is lilting final movement elegiac coda of complete work.
