2 510 Ocean Avenue Telephone: (207) Office of the Moderator of the Curia To: Pastors and Administrators From: Msgr. Andrew Dubois Re: Chrism Mass Tickets & Distribution of Oils 2017 Date: Friday, March 24, Day, Time & Place: The Most Rev. Robert P. Deeley will celebrate the Chrism Mass on Tuesday, April 11, at 5:45 PM at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. 2. Tickets for Admission: An allotment of General Seating tickets to the Chrism Mass are being sent today (via the USPS) to all the pastors/administrators of each parish for distribution to parishioners. If your parish has been invited to receive the holy oils from Bishop Deeley (see list on page 2 of this memo), the Reserved Seating tickets for your parish representatives (that is, 1 ticket for each canonical parish) will be sent to you upon confirmation of your acceptance of the Bishop s invitation. Pastors/Chaplains of the parishes/hospitals scheduled to receive the holy oils from Bishop Deeley were contacted via on Thursday, March 16. Reminder: we are in the third of a three-year rotation (adjusted for recent mergers and changes in staffing), over which time all parishes will once again have the opportunity to receive the holy oils from the Bishop. Parish representatives, along with their pastor, must arrive at the Cathedral no later than 5:00 PM for a brief rehearsal with Maryanne Harrington. Extra tickets for the Chrism Mass may be requested between Monday, March 27, and Friday, March 31. To make a request, pastors/administrators should Christine Pitteroff at christine.pitteroff@portlanddiocese.org. After March 31, tickets will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. Please return any unused tickets to Chancery ASAP so that other requests for tickets may be honored. 3. Liturgy: The Bishop celebrates the annual Chrism Mass with his presbyterate and the community of deacons, which manifests the communion of the clergy of the diocese with our bishop. Consequently, it is urged that as many priests and deacons as possible be present for the Blessing of Oils, the Consecration of the Chrism, and the Renewal of Commitment to Priestly Service. All concelebrating priests and assisting deacons are asked to bring an alb and your diocesan vestment (chasuble and white stole). Please be present in the Cathedral Chapel by 5:15 PM. 4. Distribution of Holy Oils: Clean and empty oil stocks should be delivered to the Cathedral Chapel before Mass. Please dispose of last year s oils before arriving at the Cathedral. The holy oils must be disposed of properly, by either burning or burying them. One oil stock per parish, regardless of the number of churches that comprise the parish. If you are not receiving the holy oils at the end of the Chrism Mass, they will be available in the Cathedral Chapel immediately following Mass. Vicars Forane in areas distant from Portland are urged to assist priests in their vicariates to obtain newly blessed oils. In some cases, a priest from the vicariate may volunteer to

3 travel to Portland for the Chrism Mass; in other cases, a neighboring vicariate may designate such a representative. Priests should make sure that the oil remains fit for use and should replenish it from time to time, either yearly when the bishop blesses the oil... or more frequently if necessary (General Introduction to the Pastoral Care of the Sick, no. 22). 5. Mass of the Oils Northern Maine: As is the custom in our diocese, Bishop Deeley also will celebrate a Mass of the Oils in northern Maine which will include the renewal of priestly promises and the distribution of the holy oils for parishes located in the northern and eastern parts of the state. This year, the Mass of the Oils will take place on Wednesday, April 12, at St. David Church of Notre Dame du Mont Carmel Parish, Madawaska, at 6:30 PM. 4 510 Ocean Avenue Telephone: (207) Office of Communications Bishop Deeley Announces Priest Assignment Bishop Robert P. Deeley has announced the following priest assignment for a new priest arriving in the Diocese of Portland from the Archdiocese of Lagos, Nigeria. Effective immediately, Fr. Patrick Efé-egiughwe Agbodi, SMA, has received a temporary assignment to serve at St. Joseph Parish (St. Joseph Church, Bridgton; St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, Fryeburg) and St. Teresa of Calcutta Parish (St. Catherine of Sienna Church, Norway; Our Lady of Ransom Church, Mechanic Falls; St. Mary Church, Oxford). Fr. Agbodi, who will receive a permanent assignment in the early summer, arrived in Maine last week. Good people, good people, a very friendly kind of people, Fr. Agbodi said about his first impressions of Maine. Human nature is the same everywhere, whether white or black or yellow or red, we have something in common. And you (Americans) are wonderful. Without your generosity, I don t think that we would have some of those investments that we have in Africa today. In the Catholic Church, I see charity and generosity is part of our identity, so it s everywhere. So you have helped us. Born in Nigeria in 1968, Fr. Agbodi was accepted as a seminarian for the Society of African Missions (SMA) in The SMA is an international community of missionaries founded in France in Fr. Agbodi completed his philosophical studies at Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic Major Seminary in Ibadan, Nigeria, in After completing a spiritual formation year in the Republic of Benin and a pastoral year in Ivory Coast, he completed his theological studies at the Catholic Institute of West Africa, also in Ivory Coast, in He was ordained to the priesthood on July 1, 2000, at St. Patrick Church in Asaba, Nigeria. Fr. Agbodi has served as an assistant parish priest in Liberia ( ), Nigeria ( ), and Tanzania ( ). During his eight years in Tanzania, he also served as director of vocations for the SMA s Tanzanian Region and as a vice regional superior. From 2010 to 2012, Fr. Agbodi was a formator and burser for the SMA House of Formation in Ibadan, Nigeria. Since 2012, he has served as an assistant parish priest at St. Joseph Church in Lagos ( ), a parish priest at Sacred Heart Church in Lagos ( ), and an assistant parish priest at St. Mary Church in Lagos ( ). As a missionary priest, Fr. Agbodi is always inspired by new opportunities to share the Catholic faith. Wherever there is a need, that is where they will send you, he said. So when they said, America, I said, Wow, I ll take that! I love America. I ve been thinking of going to America. I would like to come and see how it is.

5 510 Ocean Avenue Telephone: (207) Office of Communications Bishop Deeley Names New Director of Missions and Catholic Relief Services Bishop Robert P. Deeley has appointed Yvonne Borelli-Chace, Esq., as the new director of the Office of Missions and Catholic Relief Services (CRS) for the Diocese of Portland. Borelli-Chace succeeds Ruth Oakley, who will depart the diocese after 11 years of service to enter Sisters of the Mary Immaculate of Nyeri in Nyeri, Kenya. Through collaboration with parishes and schools, the Office of Missions and CRS promotes awareness and develops a sense of commitment to the missionary work of the Church throughout the world. The director also advocates for local financial support to benefit CRS, the official international humanitarian agency representing the Catholic Church in the United States, and the Pontifical Mission Societies, a group of Catholic missionary societies that are under the jurisdiction of the Pope. Borelli-Chace most recently worked as an attorney in Massachusetts handling social security disability claims, Title IX compliance cases, and guardian ad litem matters. She has also worked as a volunteer attorney for victims of sexual assault and domestic violence. In addition to her long legal career, Borelli-Chace has also served as vice president and secretary for the Saint Vincent de Paul Society in Fall River, Massachusetts. What attracted me to this position is the ability to put my faith into action, she said. I am looking forward to continuing the good work of this office and meeting all of the missionaries, pastors, and laypeople involved in this ministry. I am also excited to learn about the various missions and to discover how I can work with CRS to assist those in crisis around the world. Borelli-Chace earned a juris doctor degree from the Roger Williams University School of Law in Bristol, Rhode Island; a bachelor s degree in fashion marketing from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst; and a certificate for the study of European Union Law at the Universidade Católica Portuguesa in Lisbon, Portugal. She will begin her new role at the diocese on Monday, April 3.

6 510 Ocean Avenue Telephone: (207) Office of Communications Bishop Deeley Names New Director of Safe Environment Bishop Robert P. Deeley is pleased to announce that Gerald Coutu has been named the new director of the Office of Safe Environment for the Diocese of Portland. Coutu, who is currently the pastoral assistant/central business coordinator at St. Thérèse of Lisieux Parish in Sanford, succeeds Thom Meschinelli, who is retiring after 11 years as director. The Office of Safe Environment is responsible for assisting the bishop in ensuring the diocese s full compliance with the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People, including background checks on all diocesan employees and volunteers who work regularly with minors; the implementation of the Think First/Stay Safe prevention program for children in Catholic schools and those who participate in religious education offered through their parishes; and the implementation of the Protecting God s Children program for all those working and volunteering in the Diocese of Portland. The diocese was found 100% compliant with the Charter as part of an independent audit in I have been working with the Protecting God's Children program on a local level since its inception in 2002, said Coutu, who served as the safe environment coordinator at St. Thérèse of Lisieux. I look forward to continuing the mission of the Office of Safe Environment that Tom Deignan and Thom Meschinelli, my predecessors, have established. Upon starting his new position, Coutu plans on visiting parishes and schools throughout the diocese to meet pastors, catechetical leaders, principals, and facilitators of the Protecting God s Children program. Those are the people who work hard to make sure their parishes, schools, and communities remain in compliance with the Charter, said Coutu. I look forward to seeing that commitment firsthand and assisting in any way that I can. A Sanford native, Coutu has worked at St. Thérèse of Lisieux Parish in a variety of roles since In addition to his time as pastoral assistant/central business coordinator and safe environment coordinator, he has also served as the administrator of two cemeteries (St. Ignatius and Notre Dame) and director of religious education and youth ministry. Coutu will start his service at the diocese on Monday, April 3.
