4 THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO LUKE Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke 2: Glory to you, Lord Christ. When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us." So they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the child lying in the manger. When they saw this, they made known what had been told them about this child; and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them. But Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them. After eight days had passed, it was time to circumcise the child; and he was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb. Deacon The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. THE SERMON The Rev. Leslie J. Hague PRESENTATION AND EXAMINATION OF THE CANDIDATE The Candidate for Holy Baptism will now be presented. I present Violet Tandy Spencer to receive the Sacrament of Baptism. Will you be responsible for seeing that Violet is brought up in the Christian faith and life? I will, with God s help. Will you by your prayers and witness help her to grow into the full stature of Christ? I will, with God s help. Do you renounce Satan and all the spiritual forces of wickedness that rebel against God? I renounce them. Do you renounce the evil powers of this world which corrupt and destroy the creatures of God? I renounce them. Do you renounce all sinful desires that draw you from the love of God? I renounce them. Do you turn to Jesus Christ and accept him as your Savior? I do. Do you put your whole trust in his grace and love? I do. 4

5 Do you promise to follow and obey him as your Lord? I do. The stand, and the celebrant addresses the congregation, saying Will you who witness these vows do all in your power to support Violet in her life in Christ? We will. Let us join with Violet who is committing herself to Christ and renew our own baptismal covenant. BAPTISMAL COVENANT Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Will you continue in the apostles teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers? I will, with God s help. Will you persevere in resisting evil, and, whenever you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord? I will, with God s help. Will you proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ? I will, with God s help. Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself? I will, with God s help. Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being? I will, with God s help. 5

The says Grant, O Lord, that all who are baptized into the death of Jesus Christ your Son may live in the power of his resurrection and look for him to come again in glory; who lives and reigns now and for ever. Amen. THANKSGIVING OVER THE WATER The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise. We thank you, Almighty God, for the gift of water. Over it the Holy Spirit moved in the beginning of creation. Through it you led the children of Israel out of their bondage in Egypt into the land of promise. In it your Son Jesus received the baptism of John and was anointed by the Holy Spirit as the Messiah, the Christ, to lead us, through his death and resurrection, from the bondage of sin into everlasting life. We thank you, Father, for the water of Baptism. In it we are buried with Christ in his death. By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit. Therefore in joyful obedience to your Son, we bring into his fellowship those who come to him in faith, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Now sanctify this water, we pray you, by the power of your Holy Spirit, that those here are cleansed from sin and born again and may continue for ever in the risen life of Jesus Christ our Savior. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and forever. Amen. 6

Let us pray. Heavenly Father, we thank you that by water and the Holy Spirit you have bestowed upon this your servant, the forgiveness of sin, and have raised her to the new life of grace. Sustain her, O Lord, in your Holy Spirit. Give her an inquiring and discerning heart, the courage to will and to persevere, a spirit to know and to love you, and the gift of joy and wonder in all your works. Amen. Then the Priest places a hand on the person s head, marking on the forehead the sign of the cross and saying Violet, you are sealed by the Holy Spirit in Baptism and marked as Christ s own for ever. loudly Amen. WEDNESDAY HEALING PRAYER WITH EUCHARIST COMMEMORATION OF ELIZABETH SETON Wednesday, January 4 12:05 p.m. St. Luke's Chapel (use side door by the Jensen Courtyard) Many are asked to remember others, especially for healing, in our prayers. All are invited to join together at this service for a healing laying-on-of-hands, anointing, and prayer for others or our selves. These prayers become our Eucharistic offering as we celebrate together in our lovely St Luke's Chapel. EDUCATION FOR MINISTRY (EFM) So what is EfM? It s an adult discussion group focused on the readings that everyone has done in the previous week in the areas of Hebrew and Christian writings, history, ethics and ecclesiology (church studies) and a time of in-depth reflection and discussion on a topic drawing on contemporary culture, history, Scripture and ecclesiological culture (hymnody, tradition, the Book of Common Prayer, for example). The two groups at All Saints meet for dinner and dessert, and thus our meetings are three hours, but they afford everyone the chance not to have to rush through dinner at home or to have to get fast food that s not nutritious. Expect to be challenged, expect to learn a lot about your fellow students (and yourself!), expect to learn a lot about true and deep sharing and interactive seminars. One s commitment is not for four years, but one year at a time, as you make your way through the four different years of study. 13 Conversations with Scripture: The Gospel of Matthew An Epiphany 2017 Christian Formation Series At All Saints Episcopal Church in Fort Lauderdale Neaverson Chapel, 9:15-10:15AM In our liturgical Year A lectionary, we focus on the Gospel of Matthew. Who was Matthew and how did he communicate the Good News of Jesus Christ? We will explore the Gospel of Matthew in Epiphany on Sunday mornings using the book, Conversations with Scripture: The Gospel of Matthew by John Y. H. Yieh. The book is available in paperback and electronic version at Amazon and other sellers. We will also have a few copies for purchase in the Parish Office. The book is suggested, but not required, reading. A part of the series by the Anglican Association of Biblical Studies, this text is written from a uniquely Anglican perspective. It provides the historical and cultural context that allows us to explore the theology of Matthew. I hope you will be able to join us for all or even some of this series.
