Spiritual Growth Personal & Communal by Fr. Panayiotis Papageorgiou, M.Div., Ph.D.
Growth - Physical Growth Before After
Growth - Physical Growth Before Lots of grilled chicken After
What is Spiritual Development? Terminology Spiritual vs Physical Spiritual vs Material Spiritual vs Secular What is the Ultimate Purpose of God for us? We are created "in God's Image" so that we may grow "in His Likeness". God's Ultimate Goal for us is "to become perfected in His Likeness" (theosis (qevwsi")). YES! WE ARE CALLED TO BECOME HOLY=SAINTS
Physical & Spiritual Development The Incarnate God: Jesus Christ His Physical Development as a man: "Jesus grew in wisdom and stature." (Luke 2:52) His Spiritual Development as a man "And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them." (Luke 2:51) He develops in obedience to his earthly parents He withdraws to pray He surrenders in obedience to God the Father He is perfected in his humanity as he dies on the Cross and is risen from the dead.
Personal Spiritual Growth What does it mean to grow spiritually as a person? What does this involve? How do you measure spiritual growth?
The Parish & Spiritual Development Spiritual Development of Children: The Role of the Church Catechetical School The Role of the Parents The Role of the Priest (teacher, preacher, confessor, father) The Role of the Christian Community
The Parish & Spiritual Development Spiritual Development of Adults: Nominal Orthodox vs Dedicated Orthodox Converts Church Catechetical School for Adults The Role of the Priest (teacher, preacher, confessor, father) The Role of the Christian Community
Knowledge vs Spirituality Much Confusion on this!!!! Growing in Knowledge vs Growing Spiritually
What is True Knowledge? True Knowledge is the Personal Experience of the love of God which is cultivated and nourished within the liturgical and sacramental life of the Church. True Knowledge is the Knowledge of the presence of God in our lives - This is not attained intellectually but relationally. The knowledge of God springs forth from faith and worship. We respond to the call of God by engaging in dialogue with Him in our prayer and worship of Him. Our Personal Experience of God is the fountain which will satisfy our thirst for knowledge and understanding of Things Divine. As we come to the knowledge of God we are filled with the Holy Spirit. When the Holy Spirit fills us we have a deeper knowledge of God. We thus ascend from Glory to Glory, to the ultimate state of holiness and perfection. This is true spiritual growth!
Presuppositions to Spiritual Development for attaining True Knowledge Faith (Pistis - pivsti") = Trust in God Prayer (i) Personal or private prayer (ii) Communal worship - Divine Liturgy Our relationship with God is the source of all holiness
Basic ways to help us grow spiritually as persons Self examination Growing in humility Relationship with a spiritual father Frequent confession of sins Worship-personal prayer-participation in the Liturgy Spiritual reading - Scriptures - Spiritual books Participating in spiritual conversations (like today s) Going on pilgrimages to holy places (like monasteries) Meeting holy people - people engaged in their own spiritual growth effort
Cultivation of Spirituality Ascesis (a[skhsi") the kingdom of heaven has suffered violence, and men of violence take it by force. (Matt 11:12) Give blood and receive the Spirit. Abba Longinus, The Sayings of the Desert Fathers, 123. Personal effort is required - The "Synergia" of man with the Grace of God.
Elements of Ascesis Repentance (Metanoia - Μετάνοια) Patience Forgiveness Humility & Obedience Remembrance of death Love of God and neighbor - Charity - Almsgiving - Philanthropy Taking control over our passions -- the road to APAQEIA (passionlessness): We have not been taught to kill our bodies, but to kill our passions. Abba Poemen, The Sayings of the Desert Fathers, 193. Yet the fathers teach that we should not try to uproot the passions but only to take control over them.
Practical Approach to Personal Spiritual Growth Liturgical Participation brings about spiritual growth 1. Learning of Hymns and singing along 2. Proper preparation and frequent participation in the Eucharist (receiving Holy Communion) 3. Being in tune with the Worship Cycle of the Church - Keeping up with the Feasts and attending services 4. Participating in the Holy Week Services 5. Dedicating an Icon, a Censor, a Chalice or other Liturgical vessel through a donation 6. Offering Time, Talent & Treasure for God's work 7. Taking care of the poor, the sick and those in need 8. Bringing the Gospel to those who have not heard it
The role of the Home What things to do in the home 1. Prayer at home - establishing a proskynetarion 2. Censing at home on a regular basis 3. Making a connection with our saint - learning about his/her life, celebrating our saint's name, asking for intercessions from our saint 4. Learning to make Prosforo for the Liturgy 5. Learning to make kollyva & artoklasia for feast-days 6. Learning to make kollyva for memorials of relatives 7. Having the priest come to bless our home Personal effort is required - This is the "Synergia" of man with God for the salvation of man. Over time, these activities will have a major effect on our souls
Sources of inspiration for spiritual Growth... Where can we find living and dynamic sources of inspiration for spiritual development to draw from? 1. The Life and Teaching of Christ - Biblical Stories - Especially the New Testament 2. Teachings of the Fathers and Mothers of the Church - Patristic Writings 3. The Lives of the Saints - The Gospel in action 4. The Worship Cycle of the Church - Keeping up with the Feasts and attending services 5. Hymnology, Iconography, Architecture
Parish Spiritual Growth Our Personal growth affects the parish growth! 1. As we grow spiritually as persons our parish grows spiritually as well as a community, as a family. 2. More people become examples of faith and dedication to God for others. 3. More children receive a deeper faith from the adults who now teach them by the word and by their life. Personal effort brings the presence of the Holy Spirit - The "Synergia" of man brings about the Grace of God to the whole community. The Parish is the Sum of the total of each one of us. We shape the life of the Parish as we shape ourselves, one at a time!
The Parish - The Center of our Life Church Life cannot be Seasonal Parish Provides ideal environment for growth and maturity for all throughout the year Summer months - ideal time for Church activities (no school, no studying, abundance of time) GOYA Meetings for the youth - have to be regular The "Youth Kafenio" - a powerful concept
Heroes and Role Models 1 The Parents The Priest The Bishop The Teachers The Parish Council The Community as family We need the alliance and cooperation of all for the benefit of the whole parish
Heroes and Role Models -2 The monks and nuns are examples of self-denial and dedication to God
Heroes and Role Models -3 The modern holy men and women - Fr. Paisios, Fr. Porphyrios, Mother Gavriilia - They provide proof of God's work in the world today
Heroes and Role Models -4 The Saints - old and new - are prime examples of people who struggled, who fought the good fight and won the crown of victory. Saints represent restored humanity in its ultimate perfection
And the "Struggle" continues....
Glory be to God!
